About this file
This is a collection of professional engineering documents related to the Proton Improvement Plan-II (PIP-II) Project at Fermilab, including a project completion letter, structural analysis correspondence, pipe expansion calculations, design drawings, and HVAC specifications.
Burns and McDonnell completed professional architectural and engineering services for pipe support analysis and design under Purchase Order 683434, dated October 20, 2022. The services encompassed structural review and capacity verification for the F37 building and Cryo Plant Building (CPB) to accommodate loads from Low Conductivity Water (LCW) and Process Condenser Water (PCW) piping systems. Key deliverables included structural analysis documentation (Attachment 01), thermal expansion calculations demonstrating that a floating piping system with expansion joints at all equipment is sufficient (Attachment 02), and pipe support drawings and specifications (Attachments 03-04) for use by FRA in the PCW work package. Additional services included thermal expansion analysis for PCW piping across the bridge and within the Linac Gallery, with modifications to be incorporated into construction packages. TGRWA Structural Engineers confirmed in March 2021 that existing structures at both the F37 Service Building and Cryo Plant Building mezzanine are structurally adequate to support water-filled PCW piping at specified locations, with the option to provide supplemental framing designs via future bulletin. The PCW pipe expansion calculations table details ten pipe sections throughout the facility, all constructed of 304L stainless steel Schedule 10 material, with thermal expansion ranging from 0.06 inches to 2.15 inches based on section length and temperature differential. Section 23 05 29 of the project specifications prescribes comprehensive HVAC supports and anchors requirements, including hanger rod diameter standards based on pipe size, pipe and structural support requirements per MSS SP-58, vertical and lateral bracing specifications, clevis and swivel ring hanger types, strut support options, concrete and steel structure attachment methods, concrete bases for equipment, roof curb specifications, sleeves and lintels, escutcheon plates, pipe penetration seals, and installation execution standards requiring coordination with structural conditions and manufacturer specifications.

Re: Professional A/E Services for Pipe Support Analysis and Design in support of the Proton Improvement
Plan-II (PIP-II) Project
Dear Mr. Ball:
This letter serves as notification of the summary of services provided and transmittal of final deliverables associated with the PO No. 683434.
SERVICES PROVIDED
Burns and McDonnell has completed the following tasks to accomplish this work:
1. Meetings: Kickoff, In-Progress Reviews, and Final Closeout
2. F37:
a. Reviewed F37 structure for locations and loads from LCW process equipment and piping.
b. Updated structural calculations of current building steel to verify capacity.
c. See attached Attachment 01, documenting this structural analysis.
3. CPB
a. Reviewed structure of CPB for locations and loads from PCW piping.
b. Update structural calculations of current installed building steel to verify capacity.
c. See attached Attachment 01, documenting this structural analysis.
d. Drawings to modify existing structural steel to support PCW loads, will be incorporated in the
Utility Plant Building CF Construction Package.
e. Tabletop review of piping system with manual thermal expansion calculations.
i. Note: A floating system with expansion joints at all equipment is sufficient. Please see attached Attachment 02 for a summary of expected thermal expansion and associated calculations.
f. Provided a drawing (Attachment 03) and specification (Attachment 04) showing the pipe supports / hangers for use by FRA in the PCW work package.
g. Additional Services: Calculated expected thermal expansion of PCW piping across the bridge as well as within the Linac Gallery, modifications, as necessary will be incorporated into the Linac Complex CF Construction Package (including anchoring of the PCW system to the bridge).
QUALITY CONTROL
This work was performed in accordance with our project-specific QA/QC plan:
Q1 – Peer review of key preliminary project activities. Performed by Bart Noland.
Q3 – Self-Check of design and construction documents by lead designer. Performed by Ray Weaver, supported by Aidan Chamberlain.
Q4 – Peer review of final submittals Performed by Bart Noland

TGRWA#20044 – Process Water Piping Loads
Dear Ray, TGRWA has provided the structural design and drawings for the PIP-II Cryo Plant Building and PIP-II F37 Service Building. PCW piping will be suspended f rom the steel-f ramed mezzanine of the Cryo Plant Building and the steel-f ramed roof of the F37 Service Building. We have reviewed the PCW piping layouts provided by Maurice at FRA and have conf irmed that these structures are structurally adequate to support the piping f illed with water at the locations shown below, in addition to the other Code required roof and f loor live loads.
As part of a future Bulletin, TGRWA can provide the design drawings for any additional supplemental f raming members f rom which this piping can be hung.
Piping model in F37 building provided by FRA.

B. Supports Requirements:
1. Install roof pipe supports to resist wind movement per manufacturer’s recommendations. Method of securing base to roof shall be compatible with roofing materials.
2. Where building structural steel is fireproofed, all hangers, clamps, auxiliary steel, etc., which attach to it shall be installed prior to application of fireproofing. Repair all fireproofing damaged during pipe installation.
3. Set all concrete inserts in place before pouring concrete.
4. Furnish, install and prime all auxiliary structural steel for support of piping systems that are not shown on the Drawings as being by others.
5. Install hangers and supports complete with lock nuts, clamps, rods, bolts, couplings, swivels, inserts and required accessories.
6. Hangers for horizontal piping shall have adequate means of vertical adjustment for alignment.
C. Pipe Requirements:
1. Support all piping and equipment, including valves, strainers, traps and other specialties and accessories to avoid objectionable or excessive stress, deflection, swaying, sagging or vibration in the piping or building structure during erection, cleaning, testing and normal operation of the systems.
2. Do not, however, restrain piping to cause it to snake or buckle between supports or to prevent proper movement due to expansion and contraction.
3. Support piping at equipment and valves so they can be disconnected and removed without further supporting the piping.

8. Provide at least one hanger adjacent to each joint in grooved end steel pipe with mechanical couplings.
9. It is prohibited to cantilever a load using an angle or other structural component that is attached to a truss or joist in such a fashion that a torsional force is applied to that structural member.
10. If conditions cannot be met, coordinate installation with truss or joist manufacturer and contact the Fermilab Construction Coordinator.
D. After piping and insulation installation are complete, cut hanger rods back at trapeze supports so they do not extend more than 3/4" below bottom face of lowest fastener and blunt any sharp edges.
E. Do not exceed 25 lbs. per hanger and a minimum spacing of 2’-0” on center when attaching to metal roof decking (limitation not required with concrete on metal deck). This 25 lbs. load and 2’-0” spacing include adjacent electrical and architectural items hanging from deck. If the hanger restrictions cannot be achieved, supplemental framing off steel framing will need to be added.
F. Do not exceed the manufacturer's recommended maximum load for any hanger or support.
G. Spacing of Hangers shall be located as indicated on drawings , coordinate exact location with structure and existing conditions.
H. Installation of hangers shall conform to MSS SP-58.
