Six-month testing of tamper switches and vane-type and pressure-type water-flow devices. Quarterly testing of mechanical water-flow devices. NFPA 72-2010 Table 14.4.5; NFPA 25-2011 Table 5.1.1.2.

Vane-type and pressure switch-type waterflow alarm devices shall be tested semiannually. Per NFPA 25, Section 5.3.3.1, mechanical waterflow alarm devices shall be tested quarterly. Water shall be flowed through an inspector's test connection indicating the flow of water equal to that from a single sprinkler of the smallest orifice size installed in the system for wet-pipe systems, or an alarm test bypass connection for dry-pipe, pre-action, or deluge systems.

EC 02.03.05 EP 11 Annual Pump Test Under Flow. NFPA 25-2011: 8.3.3

Annually: An annual test of each pump assembly shall be conducted by qualified personnel under minimum, rated, and peak flows of the fire pump by controlling the quantity of water discharged through approved test devices. For installations having an automatic transfer switch, the following test shall be performed to ensure that the overcurrent protective devices (i.e., fuses or circuit breakers) do not open: (1) Simulate a power failure condition while the pump is operating at peak load, (2) Verify that the transfer switch transfers power to the alternate power source, (3) Verify that the pump continues to perform at peak load, (4) Remove the power failure condition and verify that, after a time delay, the pump is reconnected to the normal power source; Parallel and angular alignment of the pump and driver shall be checked during the annual test, and any misalignment shall be corrected.
