About this file
This is a Technical Specifications document for Section 262416 covering panelboards used in electrical systems. The specification establishes requirements for distribution panelboards and lighting and appliance branch-circuit panelboards to be supplied and installed as part of a construction contract.
The specification requires panelboards to comply with NEMA PB 1 standards and NFPA 70, with materials including copper buses, thermal-magnetic circuit breakers, and surge protective devices (SPDs) complying with UL 1449. Power panelboards must feature 1200A LSIG mains with plug-in breakers up to 125A and bolt-on breakers for larger sizes, while lighting and appliance branch-circuit panelboards require circuit breaker mains with plug-in devices. Electronic-grade panelboards must include factory-installed integral SPDs and accept bolt-on thermal-magnetic circuit breakers from approved manufacturers including ABB, Eaton, Siemens, or Square D. All panelboards require short-circuit ratings of minimum 10,000A rms symmetrical for 240V or less, and 14,000A rms symmetrical for above 240V up to 600V. Enclosures must be surface-mounted dead-front cabinets with heights not exceeding 84 inches, rated for environmental conditions per NEMA 250 (Type 1 for indoor dry locations, Type 3R for outdoor, Type 4X stainless for wash-down areas). Installation requires compliance with NECA 407 standards, with panelboards mounted on cast-in-place concrete bases, plumb mounting at 90 inches above finished floor, infrared scanning inspections at Substantial Completion and 11 months thereafter, and load balancing to achieve maximum 20 percent phase load variance. Manufacturers must be ISO 9001 or ISO 9002 certified, with 18-month warranties for panelboards and 5-year warranties for SPDs from Substantial Completion. Submittals include product data, shop drawings with time-current coordination curves, operation and maintenance manuals, and maintenance materials including spare keys, circuit breakers, and fuses.
