7. History – Power Point Slide 6:
The image on the slide is from the Historic American Building Survey (HABS) drawings.
The initial structure, the lower terminal for the aerial tramway, was constructed in 1908.
Shipments of high grade ore started in 1911.
Over the years crushing and concentration operations were added. Major modifications and additions occurred in 1915 and 1923.
From 1911 to 1938, nearly $200 million worth of copper was processed. At the peak of operation, approximately 300 people worked in the mill town and 200‐300 in the mines.
The mine closed in 1938. Little changed in the building until 1950 when a portion of the top of the structure was dismantled. Since that time exposure to the elements and scavenging contributed to the deterioration of the building.
The Kennecott site was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1986.
8. Project History – Slide 7 & 8
South elevation of the Mill building. The facility consists of 11 levels.
In the 1990’s the Friends of Kennecott, a local nonprofit that advocates for the preservation of the Kennecott site, installed new roof structure in the areas that were previously dismantled.
Also note the high grade ore chute of which the remnants which will be demolished and the chute reconstructed.
In 1998, the National Park Service acquired many of the significant buildings and lands of the historic mining town of Kennecott. Note that there are numerous private holdings within the site.
Numerous rehabilitation campaigns have occurred at the mill building over the years.
This project is Phase III of the recent rehabilitation efforts. Phase I and Phase II stabilized levels 1 through 7 as well as installed a fire detection and notification system. This project will stabilize the upper levels of the mill building.
9. Project History – Slide 9:
North elevation of the Mill building. Note the Friends of Kennecott roof structure on the upper level of the mill building. Also note the north elevation of the building at levels 7
& 8. We will review the scope in that location on the following slides.
10. Project Scope:
Note that the following slides are an overview. Refer to the Design Drawings, Specifications, and Product Data for the complete project scope. Would normally review the drawings in greater detail during the PowerPoint presentation but feel in our case it will work better if we review the drawings while in the mill building. We have several sets of drawings we can share with the group for the mill walk.
