5.2 Managing the Seaway

2019— HFM technology revolutionized the method for locking vessels. Fully deployed throughout the Great Lakes St. Lawrence Seaway System, it is called the most important technological advance since the Seaway’s opening in 1959.

The HFM system uses vacuum pads instead of wire or rope lines to secure a ship during lockage. Each pad provides up to 20 tons of holding force. The pads are mounted on vertical rails inside the lock chamber wall to secure the ship as it is raised or lowered, while keeping it a fixed distance from the lock wall.

When the vacuum is released, pads are retracted so that the vessel can sail safely out of the lock. The award-winning technology enhances safety, lowers operating costs, and reduces transit times through the locks.

It is the first use of this technology on an inland waterway.

Push the button to raise and lower the HFM.

Place your hand over a hole.

5.3 Navigating the Seaway

Ship travel in the St. Lawrence Seaway was limited to daylight hours. Churches, houses, and trees served as landmarks. Later, lighthouses and other equipment made the job easier though still challenging.

Today, innovations continue to make navigating the Seaway safe and efficient.

2012—Optional DIS technology improves safety by giving mariners precise, real time information on the distance between ship bottom and river bottom. DIS reduces groundings and allows ships to carry more cargo by better understanding water levels.

DIS combines GPS location data and hydrographic maps to model a ship’s under-keel clearance in 3D. This precise information provides up to an additional three inches of draft, allowing for as much as 360 tons of additional cargo.

This is the first new American-built tugboat to join SLSDC since the Seaway opened 61 years ago.

Construction of the SEAWAY GUARDIAN, which is capable of operating in difficult ice conditions, began in 2018. The keel was laid on June 26, 2018 and the vessel launched on September 12, 2019. Sea trials in the Gulf of Mexico were completed in June of this year and the tug began its delivery voyage to SLSDC’s marine base in Massena on July 2.

The SEAWAY GUARDIAN’S primary missions will be buoy maintenance and ice management. It will also assist in firefighting and emergency operational response.

The new tug cost $24 million to construct as part of the SLSDC’s Asset Renewal Program. The tug will replace the 62-year-old vessel, ROBINSON BAY, which the SLSDC will maintain as back-up for the foreseeable future.

Lake Vessels “Lakers” are specially designed and built to fit through the locks. Most rarely leave the St. Lawrence Seaway System. Many have self-unloading systems.

Ocean-going Vessels “Salties” are built to handle dual challenges of the fresh water Great Lakes and the world’s salt water oceans. Many have cranes mounted on deck to help load and unload cargo.

Tug-Barge Combinations Tug boats that fit into the notched stern of specially designed barges are known as tug-propelled barges. These workhorses push rather than tow the barge. They can move faster and operate in weather conditions that would stop most tows.

Along with new builds, some older ships, tugs, and barges can be converted to ATBs, giving new life to vessels otherwise headed for scrap.

5.6 What do the Ships Carry

Side view

Machine Over Muscle Self-Unloaders Self-unloaders remove cargo from vessels in hours, not days, saving time and money. They can unload up to 6,000 tons in an hour without shore-side crew and equipment.

How Self-Unloaders Work The C-Loop system, developed in the 1970s, is in use today.

Cargo is stored in separate holds. Each hold has sliding gates at the bottom. Gravity moves cargo through the gates onto conveyor belts running the length of the ship beneath the holds. The belt is about 6 feet wide and 600 feet long.

The boom—about 250 feet long—can be raised 45 degrees and rotated nearly 180 degrees. A conveyor belt within the boom carries the cargo from the self-unloader to the receiving facility or container.
