Camp Ravenna Spill Response Procedure
(Please distribute to training units as needed or post at designated areas) **Please note that all fueling operations are to take place at designated fuel point areas and within secondary containment.
Spill Cleanup Procedures for Petroleum Products
1. Stop the release and flow, if possible.
2. Evacuate the area if needed.
3. Isolate all potential environmental receptors such as drains, sumps, exposed soil, ignition sources, etc.
4. Radio/Call Camp Ravenna Range Control at (614)336-6041 or 6562 to report the spill.
5. For spilled materials of quantity of 25 gallons or more or in water, immediately report to the Camp Ravenna Range Control and indicate that you have spilled a reportable quantity.
6. For small amounts of spilled material (less than 25 gallons or not in water), follow these steps:
a. For liquids spilled on soil or other permeable surfaces, a combination of excavation and absorbent material will be used to clean up the spill. For petroleum products, use absorbents that repel water (hydrophobic). This absorbent should be worked into the spill area.
b. Soil will be excavated in small amounts of a few inches at a time (as little as necessary) to expose spilled material and then additional absorbent is to be worked in. Repeat this as necessary until all material is cleaned up and the area appears dry.
c. The excavated soil and absorbents are to be placed in plastic bags and given to Camp Ravenna Range Control within 24 hours after the spill incident.
d. Complete the First Responder Form and submit to Range Control by close of business on the day of the spill.
* All spills or releases will be reported to Camp Ravenna Range Control either by telephone or 2-way radio and a First Responder Reporting form completed by the person reporting the incident.
* Spills or releases which are beyond the immediate capabilities of the first responder or are in water, above the reportable quantity of 25 gallons of POL, involve a hazardous or extremely hazardous material, a hazardous waste, or a fire or explosion shall be reported by Camp Ravenna Range Control who will contact a Camp Ravenna On-Scene Coordinator.
