SIGNAGE

SECTION 101400

SIGNAGE

PART 1 GENERAL

1.1 SECTION INCLUDES

A. Signage accessories.

B. Interior signs for permanent rooms.

1.2 DEFINITIONS

A. Signs for Permanent Rooms: Signs for men's and women's rest rooms, numbered rooms and exits.

B. Directional and Informational Signs: Wall-mounted signs that provide direction to or information about functional spaces.

1.3 ACTION SUBMITTALS

A. Submittals: Follow Section 013000.

B. Provide shop drawings listing of sign types, lettering and locations and overall dimensions of each sign, including tactile characters and Braille.

C. Samples: Provide one full size sample sign, of type, style and color specified including method of attachment.

D. Samples for Initial Selection: Manufacturer's color charts consisting of actual units or sections of units showing the full range of colors available for the following:

1. Aluminum.

2. Acrylic sheet.

3. Polycarbonate sheet.

4. Fiberglass sheet.

5. Die-cut characters and graphic symbols. Include representative samples of available typestyles and graphic symbols.

E. Product Schedule: Use same designations indicated on Drawings.

1.4 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. For each sign form and graphic image process indicated furnish products of a single manufacturer.

1.5 REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS

A. Comply with applicable provisions of American National Standard Specifications for Making Buildings and Facilities Accessible to and Usable by Physically Handicapped People, ANSI A117.1, latest edition.

B. Comply with applicable provisions of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

1.6 DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING

A. Deliver, store and handle products to and at site according to Section 016000.

B. Package separately or in like groups of names, labeled as to names enclosed. Include installation template, hardware or adhesive specified and installation instructions.

C. Store adhesive tape at ambient room temperatures.

1.7 WARRANTY

A. Special Warranty: Manufacturer's standard form in which manufacturer agrees to repair or replace components of signs that fail in materials or workmanship within specified warranty period.

1. Failures include, but are not limited to, the following:

a) Deterioration of polymer]finishes beyond normal weathering.

b) Deterioration of embedded graphic image colors and sign lamination.

2. Warranty Period: Five years from date of Substantial Completion.

PART 2 PRODUCTS

2.1 PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS - DIRECTIONAL AND INFORMATIONAL SIGNS

A. Typestyles: Width-to-height ratio of between 3:5 and 1:1; stroke width-to-height of between 1:5 and 1:10.

B. Character Height: Sized to viewing distance.

C. Character Font: Helvetica Medium.

D. Finish and Contrast: Characters and background to be eggshell, matte or other non-glare finish. Characters to adequately contrast with background.

E. Comply with applicable provisions of Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, 1988 Edition.

2.2 PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS - PERMANENT ROOMS

A. Tactile and Braille Characters: Raised 1/32 inch accompanied by Grade 2 Braille; placed directly under corresponding text and separated by not less than 3/8" (9.5mm) from all other tactile elements.

B. Typestyles: Upper case; sans serif or "simple serif."

C. Character Height: Minimum 5/8 inch high, maximum 2 inches; all caps.

D. Character Font: Helvetica Medium.

E. Pictograms (Symbols): Equivalent written description to be placed directly below symbol.

Written description not to be within symbol's background field. Border dimension of background field to be minimum 6 inches high.

F. Finish and Contrast: Characters and background to be eggshell, matte or other non-glare finish. Characters to adequately contrast with background.

2.3 MATERIALS - GENERAL

A. Aluminum Castings: Alloy and temper as recommended by aluminum producer or finisher for casting process used and for use and finish indicated.

B. Aluminum Sheet: Alloy and temper as recommended by aluminum producer or finisher for type of use and finish indicated and with not less than strength and durability properties of ASTM B209 for 5005-H15.

C. Acrylic Sheet: ASTM D 4802, Category A-1 (cell-cast sheet), Type UVA (UV absorbing).

D. Polycarbonate Sheet: Of thickness indicated, manufactured by extrusion process, coated on both surfaces with abrasion-resistant coating:

1. Impact Resistance: 16 ft-lbf/in. (854 J/m) per ASTM D 256, Method A.

2. Tensile Strength: 9000 lbf/sq. in. (62 MPa) per ASTM D 638.

3. Flexural Modulus of Elasticity: 340,000 lbf/sq. in. (2345 MPa) per ASTM D 790.

4. Heat Deflection: 265 deg F (129 deg C) at 264 lbf/sq. in. (1.82 MPa) per ASTM D 648.

5. Abrasion Resistance: 1.5 percent maximum haze increase for 100 revolutions of a Taber abraser with a load of 500 g per ASTM D 1044.

E. Applied Vinyl: Not permitted.

F. Fasteners: Concealed fasteners, fabricated from metals which are non-corrosive to either sign materials or mounting surface, appropriate for size and weight of sign and substrate.

G. Anchors and Inserts: Non-ferrous metal or hot-dipped galvanized anchors and inserts; toothed steel or lead expansion bolt devices for drilled-in-place anchors. Furnish inserts, as required, to be set into concrete or masonry work.

2.4 PANEL SIGNS

A. Acceptable Manufacturers:

1. ACE Sign Systems, Inc., Muncie, IN.

2. APCO Signs.

3. Bunting Graphics, Inc., Verona, PA.

4. Charleston Industries, Inc., Charleston, MS.

5. Gemini Incorporated, Cannon Falls, MN.

6. Innerface Sign Systems, Inc., Atlanta, GA.

7. Mohawk Sign Systems, Amsterdam, NY.

8. Nelson-Harkins Industries, Chicago, IL.

9. Signcraft, Nashville, TN.

10. Substitutions: Follow Section 016000.

B. Interior Panel Signs: Provide smooth sign panel surfaces constructed to remain flat under installed conditions within a tolerance of plus or minus 1/16 inch (1.5 mm) measured diagonally from corner to corner, complying with the following requirements:

1. Chemically Etched Polymer: With raised lettering Colored and Grade II Braille, laminated to 1/16 inch thick base plate. Glued on letters are not acceptable.

2. Lettering: Color as selected by Contracting Officer’s Representative from manufacturer’s premium range.

3. Background Color: As selected by Contracting Officer’s Representative]from manufacturer’s premium range.

4. Tactile Characters: Characters and Grade 2 Braille raised 1/32 inch (0.8 mm) above surface with contrasting colors. Provide Braille characters with dome tops and the same color as background.

C. Panel Sign Frames: Polymer sign frame, depth appropriate to sign thickness; with a 3/16 inch wide perimeter face border or reveal; and square corner design.]

D. Changeable Message Inserts: Fabricate signs to allow insertion of changeable messages in the form of transparent covers with paper inserts:

1. Furnish insert material and software for creating text and symbols for production of paper inserts.

2. Allow for signs at all offices/administrative areas, conference rooms, meeting rooms, 32 characters per sign. Names provided upon return of submittals.

E. Tactile and Braille Sign: Manufacturer's standard process for producing text and symbols complying with ADA-ABA Accessibility Guidelines and with ICC/ANSI A117.1. Text to be accompanied by Grade 2 Braille. Produce precisely formed characters with square-cut edges free from burrs and cut marks; Braille dots with domed or rounded shape.

1. Raised-Copy Thickness: Not less than 1/32 inch (0.8 mm).

F. Panel Sign Schedule:

1. Provide signs with name and number for each space per Architectural Floor Plans for rooms and spaces. Do not use abbreviations.

a) Rest Rooms sign panels to be as follows: MEN or WOMEN (with wheelchair symbol).

b) Code required signs to display warning, danger, hazard, emergency, fire and evacuation information.

2. The following doors do not require room number signs:

a) Corridor barrier doors (cross-corridor);

b) Communicating doors in partitions between rooms with numbered entrance doors or closet doors within rooms.]

3. In rooms with a capacity of 50 or more persons provide sign(s) (one per room) in a conspicuous place near main exit indicating occupant load.

4. At inaccessible entrances, provide signage identified by the International Symbol of

Accessibility directing persons to the nearest accessible entrances.

5. At stairway enclosures serving more than three stories, provide signs identifying floor level at each landing, verbiage stating whether stair goes to roof for fire access, and verbiage directing occupants to level of and direction to exit discharge. Sign to be 5’-0” above floor and readily visible when landing door is open and closed.

2.5 ACCESSORIES

A. Mounting Hardware: Chrome screws or metal studs.

B. Tape Adhesive: Double sided tape, permanent solvent-free adhesive.

2.6 FABRICATION, GENERAL

A. Fabricate panel signs to comply with requirements indicated for materials, thicknesses, finishes, colors, designs, shapes, sizes and details of construction. Produce smooth, even, level sign panel surfaces, constructed to remain flat under installed conditions within a tolerance of plus or minus 1/16 inch measured diagonally from corner to corner.

B. Fabricate brackets and fittings for bracket-mounted signs from extruded aluminum to suit sign panel constructions and mounting conditions indicated. Factory paint brackets in color matching background color of sign panel, unless indicated otherwise.

C. Provide sign copy to comply with requirements indicated for sizes, styles, spacings, content, positions, materials, finishes and colors of letters, numbers, symbols and other graphic devices.

2.7 FINISHES, GENERAL

A. Metal Finishes: Comply with NAAMM "Metal Finishes Manual" for finish designations and application instructions.

PART 3 EXECUTION

3.1 EXAMINATION

A. Verify that surfaces are ready to receive work.

B. Beginning of installation means installer accepts existing surfaces.

3.2 INSTALLATION - EXTERIOR

A. Install sign units and components at locations shown or scheduled, securely mounted with concealed theft-resistant fasteners. Attach signs to substrates according to manufacturer's instructions.

B. Install level, plumb and at proper height. Cooperate with other trades for installation of sign units to finish surfaces. Repair or replace damaged units.

C. Attach panel signs to wall surfaces using manufacturer's standard brackets, fittings, hardware and concealed fasteners.

3.3 INSTALLATION - INTERIOR

A. Install signs according to the manufacturer's instructions. Install signs after surfaces are painted and finished, in locations indicated.

B. Mount signs on wall adjacent to latch side of door. Where a sign is required at double doors, mount sign to the right of right hand door.

1. Where there is glass sidelight at latch side of single door, adhere signs to glass in such as manner as to hide view of adhesive on inside of glass.

2. Where there is no wall space at latch side of single door or to right side of double doors, mount signs on nearest adjacent wall.

3. Mount signs to avoid door swing and protruding objects.

4. Mount signs 48 inches minimum and 60 inches maximum from finished floor to baseline of characters.

5. Do not mount signs to doors.

C. Mount overhead signs with minimum 80 inches clearance between sign and floor.

D. Locate signs on surfaces, level. Clean and polish.

3.4 CLEANING AND PROTECTION

A. Clean soiled sign surfaces according to manufacturer's instructions. Protect units from damage.
