FINISH CARPENTRY

SECTION 062000

FINISH CARPENTRY

PART 1 GENERAL

1.1 SECTION INCLUDES

A. Interior standing and running trim.

B. Interior wood door frames.

C. Interior wood casings and moldings.

D. Interior stairs and railings.

E. Hardware and attachment accessories.

F. Repair of existing standing and running trim.

1.2 ACTION SUBMITTALS

A. Submittals: Follow Section 013000.

B. Shop Drawings: Submit shop drawings indicating materials, component profiles, fastening methods, jointing details, finishes and accessories, to a minimum scale as indicated. Identify AWI quality grade, species, cut, size, back-priming and finish, assembly, fixation, preservative treatment, transitions, and scribing.

1. Profiles: Full size.

2. Elevations: 1/2” scale.

C. Product Data: Submit product data on products of this Section finishing materials and processes.

1.3 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Provide finish carpentry work according to latest edition of the AWI Quality Standards, CustomGrade as published in Architectural Woodwork Standards, Edition 1.

B. Provide products of this Section if used interior to building envelope that have no added urea-formaldehyde and comply with the following formaldehyde limits:

1. Hardwood plywood: 0.05 ppm.

2. Particle board: 0.09 ppm

3. Medium density fiberboard thicker than 5/16 inch: 0.11 ppm.

4. Medium density fiberboard to 5/16 inch thick: 0.13 ppm.

1.4 REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS

A. Conform to applicable code for fire retardant treatment of wood surfaces for flame/fuel/smoke ratings.

1.5 DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING

A. Deliver, store, handle and protect materials according to Section 016000.

B. Do not deliver materials, until painting, wet work, grinding and similar operations which could damage, soil or deteriorate materials have been completed in installation areas.

C. Areas to receive architectural woodwork must be fully enclosed with windows installed and glazed, exterior doors in place, HVAC systems operational, and temporary openings closed. All plaster, wet grinding, and concrete work to be fully dry.

D. Store interior materials indoors, in ventilated areas with constant minimum temperature of 60 degrees F and maximum relative humidity of 55 percent and a minimum of 25%.

E. Protect exterior materials against weather and contact with damp or wet surfaces. Stack lumber, plywood, and other panels flat with spacers between each bundle to provide air circulation. Provide for air circulation within and around stacks and under temporary coverings.

F. Deliver products of this Section a minimum of 72 hours before installation to allow materials to come to equilibrium.

1.6 ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS

A. Do not deliver or install interior finish carpentry until building is enclosed and weatherproof, wet work in space is completed and nominally dry, and HVAC system is operating and maintaining temperature and relative humidity at occupancy levels during the remainder of the construction period.

B. Maintain temperature and humidity in installation areas as required by fabricator of woodwork to maintain moisture content of installed finish carpentry and architectural woodwork within a 1.0 percent tolerance of optimum moisture content, from date of installation through remainder of construction period.

1.7 PROJECT CONDITIONS

A. Sequence installation to ensure utility connections are achieved in an orderly and expeditious manner. Coordinate the work with plumbing rough-in, electrical rough-in, installation of associated and adjacent components, and related items.

B. Install products of this Section after ceilings, plumbing, flooring, and related items have been installed.

C. Areas to receive architectural woodwork to be fully enclosed; windows installed and glazed; exterior doors in place; HVAC systems operational; temporary openings closed.

PART 2 PRODUCTS

2.1 MATERIALS, GENERAL

A. Softwood Lumber: PS 20; Custom grade according to AWI; maximum moisture content of 6 percent for interior work; with mixed grain of quality suitable for opaque finish.

B. Hardwood Lumber: Custom grade according to AWI; maximum moisture content of 6 percent; with mixed grain of quality suitable for transparent finish; face species and cut to match existing.

C. Lumber Trim for Opaque-Stained and Painted Applications: Kiln-dried, finger-jointed or solid lumber with surfaced (smooth) face.

2.2 ADHESIVE

A. Contact and Construction Adhesives: Low VOC-emitting solvent-free type to suit application.

2.3 ACCESSORIES

A. Material for Shimming, Blocking and Related Uses: Softwood lumber, any species.

B. Fasteners for Interior Finish Carpentry: Nails, screws, and other anchoring devices of type, size, material, and finish required for application indicated to provide secure attachment, concealed where possible.

1. Where finish carpentry materials are exposed in areas of high humidity, provide fasteners and anchorages with hot-dip galvanized coating complying with ASTM A 153/A 153M.

2. Do not use drywall, bugle head, or case-hardened screws.

C. Primer: Acrylic latex, primer sealer type.

D. Calks and Wood Fillers: Acrylic latex, low VOC, tinted to match surface finish color. Meet or exceed VOC limits of South Coast Air Quality Management District Rule #1168.

2.4 HARDWARE

A. General: Provide hardware not otherwise supplied by pre-fabricated component manufacturers.

2.5 STAIRS AND RAILINGS

A. Stairs:

1. Treads: 1-1/16-inch (27-mm), clear, kiln-dried, edge-glued, rift-sawn red oak stepping with half-round nosing.

2. Risers: 3/4-inch (19-mm) finish boards as specified above for interior lumber trim for opaque finish.

3. Finished Stringers: 3/4-inch (19-mm) finish boards as specified above for interior lumber trim for opaque finish.

B. Railings: Clear, kiln-dried hard maple of pattern indicated, either solid or laminated; 1-1/2” diameter.

C. Balusters: Clear, kiln-dried, hard maple turned balusters of pattern and size indicated.

D. Newel Posts: 2-3/4-inch- (70-mm-) square, clear, kiln-dried hard maple, either solid or laminated.

E. Handrail Bracket: Cast aluminum for 1-1/2” diameter handrail.

2.6 FABRICATION - GENERAL

A. Fabricate to AWI Custom standards.

B. Shop assemble work for delivery to site, permitting passage through building openings.

C. When necessary to cut and fit on site, provide materials with ample allowance for cutting. Provide trim for scribing and site cutting.

D. Remove adhesives from exposed and semi-exposed surfaces.

E. Finger jointed lengths on transparent finish, standing and running trim will not be permitted.

2.7 SHOP FINISHING

A. Sand work smooth and set exposed nails and screws.

B. Apply wood filler in exposed nail and screw indentations.

C. Except for items scheduled to receive site-applied, painted finishes, shop finish work in accordance with AWI pre-catalyzed lacquer or conversion varnish system.

D. Prime paint surfaces of items or assemblies to be in contact with cementitious materials.

PART 3 EXECUTION

3.1 EXAMINATION

A. Verify that surfaces are ready to receive work.

B. Verify mechanical, electrical and building items affecting work of this Section are placed and ready to receive this work.

C. Receive and distribute architectural woodwork to proper locations.

D. Beginning of installation means acceptance of existing conditions.

3.2 PREPARATION

A. Prepare walls, including installation of 3/4" x 2-1/2" minimum veneer core plywood or solid wood grounds, or extruded aluminum strips and clips. Set items plumb and true, squaring out corners, windows and door openings as appropriate.

B. Furnish and install structure, grounds, and blocking, or other anchorage which become part of the walls, floors, or ceilings, required for architectural woodwork installation. Do not proceed with the installation until such time as the blocking is installed.

3.3 INSTALLATION

A. Install work according to AWI Custom quality standards except as specified.

B. Set and secure materials and components in place, plumb and level.

C. Carefully scribe work abutting other components, with maximum gaps of 1/32 inch. Do not use additional overlay trim to conceal larger gaps.

D. On pre-finished woodwork, do all filling of nail holes and touch-up on pre-finished woodwork after installation to achieve best color blend.

E. Install trim in maximum available lengths. Stagger joints on multi-member trims. Cope inside corners, moulded trim. Miter outside corners. Countersink face fasteners and fill.

3.4 STANDING AND RUNNING TRIM INSTALLATION

A. Install trim with minimum number of joints practical, using full-length pieces from maximum lengths of lumber available. Install trim with blind nailing and concealed fastening and adhesives. When exposed fastening is required to complete installation, set exposed fastener in quirks, reveals, and reliefs.

B. Use scarf joints for end-to-end joints.

C. Stagger end joints in adjacent and related members.

D. Cope at returns and miter at corners to produce tight-fitting joints with full-surface contact throughout length of joint. Plane backs of casings to provide uniform thickness across joints, where necessary for alignment.

E. Unless otherwise indicated, countersink fasteners, fill surface flush, and sand where face fastening is unavoidable.

F. Install without splitting; drill pilot holes before fastening where necessary to prevent splitting. Fasten to prevent movement or warping. Countersink fastener heads on exposed carpentry work and fill holes.

G. Install trim flat, plumb, and square. Fill gaps between trim and building walls and ceilings. Stagger joints on multi-member trims. No joint in single running trim less than 36 inches.

H. Scribe exposed wood base.

I. Face fasteners countersunk and filled.

3.5 STAIR AND RAILING INSTALLATION

A. Treads and Risers at Interior Stairs: Secure treads and risers by gluing and nailing to rough carriages.

B. Balusters: Dovetail or mortise balusters into treads, glue, and nail in place. Let into railings and glue in place.

C. Newel Posts: Secure newel posts to stringers, rough carriages, and risers with countersunk-head wood screws and glue.

D. Railings: Secure wall rails with metal brackets. Fasten freestanding railings to newel posts and to trim at walls with countersunk-head wood screws or rail bolts, and glue. Assemble railings at goosenecks, easements, and splices with rail bolts and glue.

3.6 REPAIR OF EXISTING STANDING AND RUNNING TRIM

A. In general repair existing standing and running trim that does not meet fabrication and installation criteria for AWI Custom Grade.

B. Defects in Fabrication Requiring Correction:

1. Finger Joints

2. Sharp Edges

3. Maximum Gap Test A: 0.025 inch X 20% of joint length

4. Maximum Gap Test B: 0.025 x 6" of joint length no additional gap within 60")

5. Maximum Gap Test C: 0.025 inch

6. Flushness Variation: 0.005 inch maximum.

C. Defects in Installation Requiring Correction:

1. Exposed end returns not profiled or not self mitered returned.

2. Trim not installed plumb, level, and square.

3. Joints not staggered on multi-member trims.

4. Joints in single running trim closer than 36 inches from the next one.

5. Running joints that are not diagonal scarf, or butted with dowel, biscuit, or spline tightly fitted, flush, and glued.

6. Outside angles not mitered.

7. Exposed fasteners.

8. Drywall, bugle head, or case-hardened screws used.

9. Face fasteners not countersunk.

10. Caulking used to fill gaps that is not color compatible.

11. Warped or twisting moldings.

D. Sand and refinish existing standing and running trim as specified for new work.

3.7 PREPARATION FOR SITE FINISHING

A. Site Finishing: Refer to Section 099000.

B. Before installation, prime paint surfaces of items or assemblies to be in contact with cementitious materials.

C. Panels to be exposed outdoors to have all edges sealed.

3.8 TOLERANCES

A. Maximum Variation From True Position: 1/16 inch.

B. Maximum Offset from True Alignment with Abutting Materials: 1/32 inch.
