PART 3 EXECUTION

3.1 EXAMINATION

A. Verify that substrate surfaces are clean, smooth and flat with maximum variation of 3/16 inch in 10 feet as described in ACI 117R, or as measured by the Test Method E 1155, and are ready to receive work, and are otherwise compliant with ASTM F710.

B. To the extent necessary for installation of products of this Section and as indicated, remove existing resilient floor covering and residual adhesive according to RFCI published recommendations.

3.2 PREPARATION

A. Prepare concrete surfaces to receive resilient flooring according to ASTM F710 or manufacturer’s instructions whichever is more stringent.

B. Utilizing a qualified independent agency, perform internal relative humidity test, ASTM F2170, or anhydrous calcium chloride test, ASTM F1869, as required by flooring manufacturer on slabs on grade and internal relative humidity test, ASTM F2170, on elevated, lightweight aggregate concrete slabs. Verify concrete floors are dry to a maximum moisture content of 75% or 3 lb of water/1000 sq. ft. in 24 hours or more stringent as required by flooring manufacturer.

1. Remove sealers and curing compounds before testing.

2. Maintain the same temperature and humidity conditions as the final floor covering will be exposed to for 48 hours before and during testing.

LAVINIA, TENNESSEE TENNESSEE ARMY NATIONAL GUARD

HFR Design 096500 - 5

3. Measure at locations uniformly distributed around the slab, with 3 tests for the first 1000 sf and an additional test for each 1000 sf of floor.

4. Proceed with installation only after substrates pass testing and have been approved by resilient flooring manufacturer.

C. Apply corrective measures as necessary to bring substrate to within moisture, pH, carbonization, dusting, and other tolerances as recommended by flooring manufacturer or ASTM F710 whichever is more stringent.

D. Remove substrate coatings, paint, varnish, oil, wax, curing compounds, magic markers, and other substances that are incompatible with adhesives and that contain soap, wax, oil, or silicone, using methods recommended by manufacturer. Do not use solvents.

E. Remove sub-floor ridges and bumps. Fill low spots, depressions, cracks, joints, holes, and other defects with sub-floor filler. Clean construction joints, saw cuts, score marks and cracks, and fill with underlayment. Finish repaired areas flush with surface of concrete; allow repaired areas to dry before installation of floor covering.

F. Apply, trowel and float filler to leave smooth, flat hard surface. Do not fill movement joints in slabs such as expansion joints and isolation joints. Do not cover movement joints with resilient flooring; use expansion joint seals, installed according to manufacturer’s written instructions.

ASTM F710 (guide for preparing concrete to receive resilient flooring)

G. Treat slab-on-grade control joints per ASTM F710. Clean control joints of debris and fill them with latex patching or cementitious patching compound as recommended by flooring manufacturer. Finished flooring can then be installed directly over the joint.

H. Move resilient products and installation materials into spaces where they will be installed at least 48 hours in advance of installation.

1. Do not install resilient products until they are same temperature as space where they are to be installed.

I. Vacuum clean substrate. After cleaning, examine substrates for moisture, alkaline salts, carbonation, and dust. Proceed with installation only after unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected. Apply primer to substrate as required by flooring manufacturer.

J. Beginning of installation means acceptance of substrate.

3.3 INSTALLATION - TILE FLOORING

A. Install products of this Section according to manufacturer's instructions.

B. Install flooring wall to wall before installation of floor-set cabinets, casework, furniture, equipment, lockers and movable partitions.

C. Upon COR's written authorization, installation of permanent, floor-mounted mechanical equipment may precede flooring as required to establish specified environmental conditions.

Provide resilient base at exposed edges of mechanical equipment.

LAVINIA, TENNESSEE TENNESSEE ARMY NATIONAL GUARD

HFR Design 096500 - 6

D. Mix tile from container to ensure shade variations are consistent when tile is placed.

E. Spread only enough adhesive to permit installation of materials before initial set.

F. Set flooring in place. Attain full adhesion by pressing with heavy roller or by employing other methods as recommended by flooring manufacturer.

G. Lay flooring with joints and seams parallel to building lines to produce symmetrical tile pattern.

H. Install tile to one-quarter turn pattern or other pattern as indicated on Drawings.

I. With door in closed position, terminate flooring at centerline of doors where adjacent floor finish is dissimilar.

J. Install edge strips at unprotected or exposed edges and where flooring terminates.

K. Scribe flooring to walls, columns, floor outlets and other appurtenances to produce tight joints.

3.4 INSTALLATION - BASE MATERIAL

A. Allow coiled wall base to lay flat for at least 24 hours, between 65° and 85°F (18° and 30°C) with HVAC system operating, prior to installation.

B. Apply adhesive to back of base to cover minimum 80% of back surface. Install resilient base in lengths as long as practicable without gaps at seams and with tops of adjacent pieces aligned.

Fit joints tight and vertical.

C. Corners:

1. Internal Corners: Miter internal corners. Use straight pieces of maximum lengths possible.

a. Install wall base and terminate into corner.

b. Position another piece of wall base on opposing wall, without adhesive, approximately 1" from installed piece.

c. Utilize dividers; place one pin at top of installed piece and one pin at top of uninstalled piece. Carefully, move dividers downward in a straight vertical motion, allowing pin of dividers to follow profile of installed piece. At same time, place adequate pressure on pin to transfer and/or scribe profile onto surface of uninstalled piece.

d. Use a utility knife to cut scribe line on uninstalled wall base, apply adhesive, and position trimmed section into place.

2. External Corners: At external corners, 'V' cut back of base strip to 20% of its thickness or more as indicated by manufacturer’s written instructions and fold. Form without producing discoloration (whitening) at bends.

a. Stop application of adhesive to wall base approximately 18" (45cm) from outside corner of wall.

b. Position wall base at corner and pencil line back of wall base where bend is required.

LAVINIA, TENNESSEE TENNESSEE ARMY NATIONAL GUARD

HFR Design 096500 - 7

c. Lay wall base on floor with back up. Utilizing a top-set or pulltype gouge tool, make a shallow notch along pencil line.

d. Reposition wall base corner on wall. Corner of wall should fit snugly into notched recess on back of wall base.

e. Apply adhesive and roll firmly into place.

D. Install base on solid backing. Bond tightly to wall and floor surfaces.

E. Scribe and fit to door frames and other obstructions.

3.5 INSTALLATION - RESILIENT ACCESSORY MATERIALS

A. Comply with manufacturer's written instructions for installing resilient accessories.

B. Resilient Molding Accessories: Butt to adjacent materials and tightly adhere to substrates throughout length of each piece. Install reducer strips at edges of resilient floor covering that would otherwise be exposed.

3.6 CLEANING

A. Clean work according to Section 015000. Remove excess adhesive from floor, base and wall surfaces without damage.

B. Clean and finish floor and base surfaces. Follow initial cleaning and maintenance procedures indicated in manufacturer's specifications. Do not use materials or procedures that are harmful to floor finish or that void manufacturers’ warranties, such as solvent-based strippers.

3.7 PROTECTION

A. Protect finished work.

B. Prohibit foot traffic from finish floor for 24 hours after installation. Prohibit furniture from floor finish for 48 hours after installation. Prohibit rolling traffic from finish floor for 72 hours after installation.

C. Cover new floors with building paper.
