PART 3

EXECUTION

3.1

EXAMINATION

A.

Verify requirements for concrete cover over reinforcement.

B.

Verify that anchors, seats, plates, reinforcement and other items to be cast into concrete are accurately placed, positioned securely, and will not cause hardship in placing concrete.

3.2

PREPARATION

A.

Prepare previously placed concrete by cleaning with steel brush and applying bonding agent in accordance with manufacturer's instructions.

B.

In locations where new concrete is doweled to existing work, drill holes in existing concrete, insert steel dowels and pack solid with non-shrink grout.

C.

Formwork: Refer to section 03120. Where soil conditions will permit excavation to accurate sizes without bracing, side forms for footings may be omitted.

D.

Coordinate the placement of joint devices with erection of concrete formwork and placement of form accessories.

3.3

REINFORCEMENTS

A.

Detailing and placement, including supports and concrete protection for reinforcement, shall conform additionally to ACI 315.

B.

Wire mesh reinforcement shall be continuous on grade. Laps shall be at least one full mesh plus 2 inches, staggered to avoid continuos lap in either direction, and securely wired or clipped with standard clips. Mesh shall be supported on precast concrete units in manner that will support the mesh at the minimum height indicated.

C.

Installation of Anchorage Items: Anchorage items shall be of number size, and location to ensure sufficient anchorage for purpose intended.

D.

Joints: Joints between interior slabs on grade and vertical surfaces shall be of premolded expansion joint filler, extending full slab depth.

E.

Inserts: Provide inserts, sleeves, anchors, bolts and other devices required to complete the work. Properly locate in cooperation with other trades and secure in position before concrete is placed.

3.4

PLACING CONCRETE

A.

Concrete shall be rapidly handled from mixer to forms and deposited as nearly as possible in its final position without segregation or loss of ingredients.

B.

Ensure reinforcement, inserts, embedded parts, formed expansion and contraction joints are not disturbed during concrete placement.

C.

Consolidation of Concrete: Concrete shall be spaded and worked by hand or vibrated when required to assure close contact with all surfaces of forms and reinforcements.

D.

Concrete that has partially hardened shall not be deposited in the work. Retempered concrete shall not be used.

E.

All concrete shall be placed upon clean, damp surfaces, free from water and never upon a soft mud or dry, porous earth.

F.

Place concrete continuously between predetermined expansion, control, and construction joints.

G.

Do not interrupt successive placement; do not permit cold joints to occur.

H.

Saw cut joints within 24 hours after placing. Use 3/16 inch thick blade, cut into 1/4 depth of slab thickness.

I. Screed slabs level, maintaining surface flatness of maximum 1/4 inch in 10 feet.

3.5

CONCRETE FINISHING

A.

Dusting of the concrete surface with dry cement and/or sand mixture shall not be permitted.

B.

All concrete shall be free from trowel marks. Provide a nonslip light broom finish after troweling on exterior surfaces.

3.6

CURING AND PROTECTION

A.

Immediately after placement, protect concrete from premature drying, excessively hot or cold temperatures, and mechanical injury (rain, flowing water, etc.) for at least seven days.

B.

Maintain concrete with minimal moisture loss at relatively constant temperature for period necessary for hydration of cement and hardening of concrete.

C.

All equipment needed for adequate curing and protection of the concrete shall be on hand and ready to install before actual concrete placement begins.

D.

Protection shall be provided as necessary to prevent cracking of concrete slabs due to temperature changes during the curing period.

3.7

FIELD QUALITY CONTROL

A.

Four concrete test cylinders will be taken for every day concrete is placed.

B.

One additional test cylinder will be taken during cold weather concreting, cured on job site under same conditions as concrete it represents.

C.

Test age for concrete shall be 7 days and 28 days. Provide two tests each test age.

D.

One slump test will be taken for each set of test cylinders taken.

E.

Compression test shall be done in conformance with ASTM C39.

3.8

PATCHING

A.

Excessive honeycomb or embedded debris in concrete is not acceptable.

B. Immediately after removal of forms, honeycomb, spalling, and other defects shall be patched. Defective areas shall be thoroughly wetted and filled with cement mortar composed of one part cement and two parts fine sand.

3.9

DEFECTIVE CONCRETE

A.

Defective Concrete: Concrete not conforming to required lines, details, dimensions, tolerances or specified requirements.

B.

Repair or replacement of defective concrete will be determined by the Contracting Officer.

C. Do not patch, fill, touch-up, repair, or replace exposed concrete except upon express direction of Contracting Officer for each individual area.
