If no differently required, steel to be used for reinforcement shall be type B 450C, round deformed and factory checked, with the following characteristics:

‐ Yield tensile stress N/sq.mm. 450 ‐ Ultimate tensile stress N/sq.mm. 540 ‐ Average ratio between effective (fy_eff) and rated (fy_nom) yield tensile stresses shall be lower than 1.25.

‐ Average ratio between ultimate and yield tensile stresses shall be between 1.35 and than 1.15.

‐ Uniform elongation at maximum tensile strength shall be > 7,5%

4a‐02 PERFORMANCE STANDARDS. In addition to what specified on the drawings and in these specifications, the requirements set forth by the following norms apply:

‐ Law 5/11/1971 No. 1086 ‐ D.M. 14/1/2008 “Norme tecniche per le costruzioni” (technical norms for constructions)

IVa‐2

‐ Consiglio Superiore dei LLPP “Linee guida per la messa in opera del calcestruzzo strutturale e per la valutazione delle caratteristiche meccaniche del calcestruzzo indurito” (guidelines for the pourting of structural concrete and for the evaluation of the mechanical characteristics of hardened concrete).

a. Batches. Batches shall be prepared and hauled so as to avoid segregation of the components, or a premature start of curing at the time of concrete placement. The casting must be adequately compacted and vibrated. The concrete surface must be kept moist for a minimum 3 days period. Concrete shall not be placed when the temperature is less than 0 degrees C. Dosing and preparation of concrete mix shall be performed with a concrete mixing equipment adequate to guarantee a proportion of ingredients with 3% accuracy for cement and for the only aggregates class. Mixing in truck mixer is allowed: in this case, mixing duration shall be 50 container revolutions. Mixing shall be performed in the factory before proceeding to transportation. Use of fixed concrete mixer is allowed only for castings of a volume below 1 cu m.

b. Joints. When bar joints in a stressed area cannot be avoided, they shall be made in the less stressed points following the method indicated below and spacing them adequately:

(1) Welding.

(2) Threaded sleeve.

(3) Overlapping by a 20 diameter minimum length and diverting the remaining section of each bar towards the compressed area.

The clearance between two adjacent bars at overlapping shall not exceed 6 times the bar diameter. Tension stressed bars shall not be spliced by overlapping.

c. Bent Bars. The curvature radius of the bent bars shall be no less than 6 times the bar diameter.

d. Bars Cover and Clearance between Two Adjacent Bars. In slabs, baffles and partitions the distance between the surface of any reinforcing bar and the nearest concrete exterior face shall be no less than 0.8 cm, and no less than 2 cm for beams and columns;

however, the requirements indicated on the drawings govern. The distance between adjacent reinforcing bar surfaces in every direction shall be no less than 1 time the bar diameter, and in all cases no less than 2 cm. For this purpose special spacers shall be used.

e. Stirrups shall be closed and shaped adequately to resist so that by working under tensile stress they may resist the outward movement of the longitudinal bars.

IVa‐3

f. Removal. Form must be removed by degrees and in such a manner as to avoid dynamic actions. Forms shall not be removed prior to concrete having reached the stress value necessary for use of the structure at the time of removal. However, such a decision rests with the COR. If other specific checks are not required, the following minimum time frame before removal of forms shall be complied with:

(1) Ordinary Concrete.

‐ Side forms of beams and columns 3 days ‐ Slab forms ‐ short span 10 days ‐ Shoring and ribbing of beams, arches, vaults, etc. 24 days ‐ Cantilever structures 28 days.

(2) High resistance Strength Concrete Mix.

‐ Side forms of beams and columns 2 days ‐ Slab forms ‐ short span 4 days ‐ Shoring and ribbing of beams, arches, vaults, etc. 12 days ‐ Cantilever structures 14 days.

4a‐03 EXPOSED SLAB FINISHING. On all exposed slabs, the surface finishing level shall be such as not to present variations over 5 mm on every 3 m section. Concrete shall be compacted with a wooden or metallic bar and the finished surface with a wooden trowel.

The surface shall be smooth and even, sand granulated, free of irregularities and of tools marks. As to walkways or where a smooth finishing is required, at the completion of the operations described above, a pouring of grout, consisting of one part of Portland cement and of no more than two parts of fine aggregate mixed with water to the consistency of a dense paint shall be applied. The grout shall be smoothed with a trowel and kept damp for the seasoning.

4a‐04 TESTS.

a. Concrete Mix Tests. Concrete specimens shall be taken as prescribed at para.

11.2 of DM (Ministerial Decree) 14/01/2008 “Norme tecniche per le costruzioni” (technical norms for constructions). A test is required for 300 cu m of concrete maximum. Each test shall consist of three sample takings, each one performed on 100 cu m casting maximum.

At least one sample taking shall be performed in each day or pouring. Each sample shall consist of two specifimens to be prepared and seasoned in accordance with norms UNI 12390. Shapes and dimensions of the specimens and of associated frame forms shall be as indicated in Standard UNI 12390. Whenever differences in concrete batch components may lead to assume that concrete quality does not meet the specifications requirements, the COR will have the right to order that further specimens be furnished. The specimens shall be delivered to the COR, who will send them to an official test laboratory for the evaluation of compressive strength. The costs of these tests shall be borne by the Contractor. In the event that the requirements set forth in DM of 14 Jan 2008 on the sample taking are not ascertained or in case tests on concrete placed are not possible or provide negative results, the COR will have the right to order the demolition and reconstruction of the defective portion of the structure.

IVa‐4

b. Reinforcing Bar Tests. Out of each bar lot three bar sections of each diameter will be taken by the COR and sent to an official laboratory specialized in the steel strength tests specified in DM of 14 Jan 2008. The costs of these tests shall be borne by the Contractor. In case of negative results, the measures indicated in the above mentioned Ministerial Decree will be implemented.
