About this file

This document is a Shop Work Instruction (SWI) for Bradley Fighting Vehicle Systems DC Motors, specifically detailing remanufacturing and testing procedures for DC motors with part numbers 12292399 and 12292400. The comprehensive technical manual provides detailed work packages covering disassembly, repair, reassembly, performance testing, and mandatory replacement parts for multiple motor variants from different suppliers (Skurka and Inland).

The SWI outlines specific remanufacturing requirements, including a standard motor overhaul process that involves disassembly, cleaning, inspection, refurbishing commutators, installing new brushes and bearings, replacing brake components, and updating gaskets and seals. Each motor type has discrete tasks unique to its configuration, such as upgrading armature versions, replacing brake nuts, and crimping terminals. The document includes extensive parts lists, technical diagrams, cleaning procedures, and testing requirements, with the ultimate goal of ensuring motor performance meets critical item product fabrication specifications (CIPFS) for the Bradley Fighting Vehicle turret drive system.

APPENDIX C - CLEANING PROCEDURES

APPENDIX C-1

INFORMATION TAKEN FROM DMWR 9-2350-284-2-2, DATED AUGUST 1994,

PARAGRAPH 4-4

4-4 GENERAL CLEANING AND INSPECTION PROCEDURES

a. Cleaning: General procedures for cleaning are described as follows. Any cleaning procedure that is peculiar to a specific part or component is covered in disassembly, repair, or reassembly paragraph relating to that item.

1) Equipment Required: Agitated Dip Tank (degreaser), Model HPJ (61755) or equivalent.

2) General Procedures:

a) Cleaning of Parts: All disassembled components shall be thoroughly cleaned and kept clean throughout entire reconditioning process. Cleaning ensures effective inspection for wear, damaged and serviceability of components. Electrical components shall not be immersed in solvent or subjected to liquid or vapor degreaser.

b) Identification: Establish proper controls or identification to maintain relationship of matched parts.

c) Handle With Care: Use utmost care when handling parts and during cleaning and reconditioning operations. Nicks, scratches, dents, or burrs can prevent proper assembly or cause malfunction after assembly.

d) Avoid Abrasives: Except where specifically recommended, never use abrasives, files, scrapers, wire brushes, or sharp tools on surfaces where finish is important to operation of close fitting parts.

3) DC Motors:

Solvent fumes can burn and could poison you.

a) Assembled Motors: Using degreaser, remove dirt. Wipe motor dry with clean cloth.

b) Motor Parts:

APPENDIX C - CLEANING PROCEDURES

APPENDIX C-2

Compressed air can injure you and others.

1) Vacuum loose dirt from rotor, stator, and bearing bracket assemblies.

If vacuum is not available, use dry, filtered compressed air, 20 psi maximum to carefully blow out loose dirt.

WARNING

Alcohol and naptha fumes are toxic and flammable.

Solvent fumes can burn and could poison you.

Do not rub varnished parts, particularly windings, hard enough to remove varnish. Never soak components with windings in cleaning solvent as soaking may soften or remove varnish

2) To clean parts containing windings and/or insulation, use lint-free cloth or soft bristle brush moistened with solvent such as isopropyl alcohol or naptha. Thoroughly dry after cleaning with dry, filtered compressed air, 20 psi maximum.

3) Clean metal parts, other than ball bearings by immersion in degreaser.

Clean ball bearings using clean wiping rag.
