4.4 Test methods and procedures.
4.4.1 Insert removal force (shear), minimum. The threaded insert shall withstand the force applied in a direction perpendicular to the thread axis one (1) inch above the gasket seat surface of the threaded insert at a velocity not to exceed 20±1 inches per minute. If any threaded insert deflects more than 0.25 inches at the point of applied force during the test, or exhibits permanent deformation after the test, the lot shall be rejected. Parts tested shall not be returned to the lot, but may be used in 4.4.6.
4.4.2 Upward insert removal force, minimum. The threaded insert shall be pulled away from the plastic body of the molded body assembly at a velocity not to exceed 20±1 inches per minute until the threaded insert has been completely dislodged. The direction of travel shall be along the thread axis. The peak force required to dislodge the threaded insert shall be measured.
If any threaded insert is pushed out with a force less than specified, the lot shall be rejected.
Parts tested shall not be returned to the lot, but may be used in 4.4.6.
4.4.3 Examination of molded body assembly cavity. A ‘go’ gage shall be created using the MMC of the internal profile of the grenade body. The lot shall be rejected if one (1) or more units do not accept the gage.
4.4.4 Density of main charge pellet. If any unit fails to comply with the density requirement of the drawing, the production represented by the samples shall be rejected. The density of PAX-3 main charge pellet shall be determined as follows.
a. The pressed pellet shall be stabilized at a temperature of 64.4°F to 77.0°F (18°C to 25°C) for a minimum of 12 hours prior to measuring density.
b. The water temperature shall be the same as the pellet temperature, 64.4°F to
77.0°F (18°C to 25°C).
c. The pressed pellet shall then be weighed in two modes to an accuracy of 0.001 g as follows.
i. Weighed in air.
ii. Weighed in distilled water.
d. The density of the pressed pellet shall be calculated according to the following formula.
Where:
Dp = Density of pressed pellet (g/cm3) Wa = Weight of pellet in air (g) Ww = Weight of pellet in water (g) Dw = Density of water at test temperature (g/cm3)
4.4.5 Detonator cavity examination of grenade body assembly, prior to assembly of
M213 fuze. A gage shall be created to thread into the grenade body assembly using the MMC of the M213 Fuze dimensions. The gage shall fully thread into the grenade body assembly using minimal torque to indicate an acceptable detonator cavity. The unit shall be rejected if it does not accept the gage.
4.4.6 Closure disk push out force. After the sealant has cured the closure disk shall be pushed out of the grenade body assembly at a velocity not to exceed 20±1 inches per minute until the closure disk has been completely dislodged. The direction of travel shall be along the thread axis. The peak force required to dislodge the closure disk shall be measured. If any closure disk is pushed out with a force less than specified, the lot shall be rejected. Parts tested shall not be returned to the lot.
4.4.7 Radiographic examination of M213 hand grenade fuze assembly, prior to loading in the grenade body assembly. Each fuze assembly prior to loading into the grenade body assembly shall be subjected to the radiographic examination. The inspection equipment and the image quality of the radiographs for this examination shall be in accordance with ASTM E 1742.
Radiographic personnel shall be qualified in accordance with NAS 410. The direction of the x-ray beam employed in this inspection shall be perpendicular to the axis of the delay column. If any fuze shows evidence of any of the defects listed below, it shall be classified as defective and removed from lot. All fuzes classified as defective shall be segregated and re-inspected within or at the end of the shift where they were initially rejected. Fuzes that are accepted by the AIE at re-inspection may be returned to lot as acceptable product. Fuzes that are rejected by the AIE at re-inspection shall be segregated and dispositioned as follows:
a. Missing delay column – Critical nonconformance. The fuze lot shall be rejected.
b. Short delay column – Critical nonconformance. The fuze lot shall be rejected.
c. Void or crack – Any inclusion in the delay column greater than the values in
Table III and Table IV. The fuze shall be segregated and functioned within 24 hours. Delay time shall be recorded during functioning. If any fuze functions at less than 4.0 seconds or greater than 10.0 seconds then the fuze lot shall be rejected and the unit shall be classified as a Critical nonconformance, otherwise it shall be a Major defect.
d. Missing detonator charge – Major nonconformance. The unit shall be rejected.
Table III. Maximum acceptance size of a void/crack in delay column below the threaded area of the fuze body (fire stem).

4.4.8 Salt spray. Testing shall be performed after application of all specified protective finishes. The salt spray test shall be in accordance with ASTM B117, “Standard Method of Salt Spray (Fog) Testing,” for a period of 96 hours. All test samples shall be aged at room temperature for 24 hours before being subjected to the salt spray. A quantity of five parts from each production lot shall be used as the test samples in lieu of specimens. This test is a destructive test. Parts tested shall not be returned to the lot.
4.4.9 Functioning.
4.4.9.1 Functioning of grenade assembly. One hundred (100) grenade assemblies shall be selected from each lot and divided into two samples of 50 each. The first sample of fifty (50) shall be subjected to this test. The grenade assembly shall be assembled to a fixture. The safety clip shall be unlatched, the pull ring pulled and the assembly allowed to function. If the grenade is allowed to function but results in a hung striker, this shall be a critical defect (see 6.5). If all 50 grenades assemblies function high order, the lot is acceptable and the second sample of 50 may be returned to the lot. If two (2) or more assemblies fail to function high order, the lot shall be rejected. If one (1) assembly fails to function high order, the second sample of 50 shall be subjected to this test. If a total of two (2) or more grenade assemblies from the two samples fail to function high order, the lot shall be rejected. For First Article Test, all 50 grenades shall function high order.
4.4.9.2 Functioning of fuze lots more than 12-months old. One-hundred (100) fuzes shall be randomly selected from each fuze lot and subjected to this test. The fuze shall be assembled to a fixture and tested for the high order functioning. If two (2) or more fuzes dud or fail to function high order, the fuze lot represented by the sample shall be rejected. This test is required when the date of Fuze assembly into the Grenade Body Assembly is more than 12 months from the Fuze lot acceptance test date on the M213 Fuze Ammo Data Card.
4.4.9.3 Functioning of grenade assembly, assembled with fuze lots more than 12-months old. One hundred twenty-five (125) grenade assemblies shall be selected from each lot and subjected to this test. The grenade assembly shall be assembled to a fixture. The safety clip shall be unlatched, the pull ring pulled and the assembly allowed to function. If three (3) or more assemblies fail to function high order, the lot shall be rejected.
4.4.10 Pull ring disengagement torque from confidence clip. A sample of one hundred
(100) fully assembled production fuzes or grenades (complete with spring, hinge pin, striker, lever, and confidence clip) shall be randomly selected from each lot for testing. The lot shall be rejected if the sample’s Zupper value is not greater than 1.60 and Zlower value is not greater than
2.00. In addition, the lot shall be rejected if three (3) or more fuze assemblies have a peak disengagement torque below the lower limit or if seven (7) or more exceed the upper limit specified in section 3.12. Fuzes shall not be returned to lot. Fuzes may be utilized for additional functional testing as appropriate. The fuze shall be mounted to a fixture allowing only rotational movement of the pull ring assembly, with the pull ring standing off the fuze body at 90 degrees, in a ready to arm position. The pull ring shall be rotated clockwise about the axis of the safety pin in a controlled manner to disengage the pull ring from the confidence clip. The pull ring shall be allowed to float side to side, allowing the head of the safety pin to deform, simulating the end user interaction. The peak torque required to fully disengage the pull ring from the confidence clip shall be recorded and shall meet requirements.
4.4.11 Minimum duckbill height after pull ring engagement. Sample fuzes shall be stratified throughout the production of the entire lot. The sample duckbills shall be inspected after pull ring engagement to the confidence clip using the appropriate AIE. If the sample fails to meet the requirements of 3.13 the lot shall be rejected. If the sample passes, it may be reintroduced into the lot or used for further testing. If the sample fails to meet the requirements of 3.5 the safety pin shall be pulled and withdrawal resistance recorded. If the resulting withdrawal resistance is below 10 lbs, the non-conformance shall be classified as a critical and the lot shall be rejected.
4.4.12 Fuze to grenade body assembly torque. Each torque being applied during the fuze to grenade body assembly operation shall be measured. Any measurement that fails to meet the required torque shall be removed from the lot.
4.4.13 Ammunition lot number. Visually verify that an ammunition lot number has been assigned to each lot as described in MIL-STD-1168.
4.4.14 Moisture content of foam support. Samples shall be selected and tested in accordance with the applicable paragraph “Moisture content” of MIL-P-60312. If the sample fails to meet the requirements, the lot shall not be used until dried sufficiently to meet those requirements.
4.4.15 Static potential test of foam support. Samples shall be selected and tested in accordance with the applicable paragraph “Static potential” of MIL-P-60312. If the sample fails to meet the applicable requirements, the lot shall not be used.

6.5 Critical characteristic rationale.
Paragraph Critical Callouts Critical Rationale
4.3.3.11 C1 - Safety clip missing or incorrectly
assembled Missing or incorrectly assembled safety devices results in catastrophic risk severity and warrants a critical classification.
4.3.3.11 C2 – Either lever hinge ear missing, both
lever hinge ears not bent away from the body past the vertical centerline of the body hinge bosses, ends of both lever hinge ears not bent upwards, or both hinge bosses missing
If either lever hinge ear missing; both lever hinge ears not bent away from the body past the vertical center line of the body hinge bosses; ends of both lever hinge ears not bent upwards; or both hinge bosses missing, the safety feature is degraded possibly allowing inadvertent initiation while still being held in the hand with the pin pulled.
4.3.3.11 C3 - Safety pin missing, cracked, broken
or duckbill damaged
Damage to the primary safety device could cause an unintentional function resulting in catastrophic risk severity and warrants a critical classification.
4.3.3.11, 4.4.9.1
C1 – Hung striker A hung striker is defined is a striker assembly that fails to rotate and impact the delay assembly primer due to a burr (including flash) or other cause which results in sufficient restraint to prevent rotation of the striker assembly upon release of the lever.
Results in risk severity of critical and classification as critical.
