About this file

This is a bridge inspection report for the South Fork Umatilla #2 bridge located in Umatilla National Forest, Oregon, conducted on August 21, 2023. The report documents a routine inspection of a timber bridge built in 1954 with glue-laminated girders and nail-laminated deck, crossing the South Fork Umatilla River at milepost 1.1650 on Forest Service Route 3200000.

The inspection identified several critical issues: part of the bridge of beginning (BOB) approach washed away during 2020 flooding, requiring an estimated 53 cubic yards of fill repair; asphalt concrete surface shows transverse cracking at 3-8 foot spacing with an 8-inch diameter hole; timber railing needs replacement with crash-rated MASH standard; and the center pier has exposed footing and debris accumulation. The bridge currently has load ratings ranging from 24-50 tons depending on vehicle type. The structure received condition ratings of 6 for deck, 6 for superstructure, 4 for substructure, and 4 for scour critical assessment. The report recommends multiple repairs including joint repairs, riprap installation, approach fill replacement, asphalt patching, railing upgrades, and new load rating analysis due to the pre-1970 glulam construction.

Remarks

Bridge is warranted for new crash raated rail and approach rail to be added. New bridge rail would require new deck.

Deck joints need to be cleaned out, repaired and then deck and approaches need to be reppave.

BOB approach washout needs to be filled in and AC repaired.

There are several washouts of the entire road U/S of this bridge and places where the road is filled in from cut bank side. SF Umatilla #3 and Thomas Creek were accessed for inspection by hiking to them.
