SAMPLE TASK DESCRIPTIONS
Sample Task 1 (written):
A project has been started that has visibility at Headquarters and a short, fixed timeline for deliverables. The project will create demonstration hardware/software for autonomous operation of small airports with up to 10,000 operations a year. The project involves:
FFC as the simulated airport
An ATM simulation facility operated by a different Division at Ames as the
TRACON and Center ATM components
A cockpit automation component that will be developed by NASA Langley and installed in the ACFS
Incorporating several commercial products already in use, mostly in Europe, into the airport operation automation
The ARC Division responsible for the TRACON/Center simulation facility is managing the overall project.
SimLabs is responsible for these parts of the project (i.e., the sub-project):
Developing the airport simulation, scenarios, and airspace
Developing the airport algorithms and autonomy tools
Integrating commercial products into the FFC and the autonomous tools
Integrating the Langley cockpit automation into the ACFS
Interconnecting FFC and ACFS into the distributed simulation
Operations during several human-in-the-loop experiments
SimLabs has no in-house expertise on small airport operations.
Prepare a response that demonstrates the Offeror’s understanding of this work in the context of, and with cross references to, the SOW and describes its approach to supporting the sub-project. The response must:
1. List all assumptions.
2. Identify top technology constraints and risks. When appropriate, the Offeror should explain how risks will be minimized and how trade-offs between cost, schedule, and technical approach will be considered.
3. Provide a notional Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) identifying necessary resources.
After initiation of the sub-project, the following situations arise:
A. It becomes clear as software development progresses that the acceptance test plan for the autonomous software is failing to capture all of the problems. Describe possible solutions.
B. Then, pilot evaluations made about halfway through the project indicate that the ground/air communications concept is unworkable and a major change in design is required. Describe how you would propose to complete the redesign and implementation of a new concept within the existing project schedule.
C. Then, unforeseen problems with the commercial components come up one month before a milestone experiment and it looks like these problems will threaten the schedule. Describe possible solutions.
Sample Task 2 (written):
Existing interchangeable VMS cabs are decades old and built around outdated technology. SimLabs wants to build a new cab in-house that is compatible with the most current technology and interfaces with the existing VMS infrastructure. The new cab will be significantly structurally different from existing cabs. The new cab and associated technology will become part of SimLabs standard operations.
context of, and with cross references to, the SOW and describe an approach to supporting this new capability. The response must:
1. List all assumptions should explain how risks will be minimized and how trade-offs between cost, schedule, and technical approach will be considered.
3. Briefly explain which SOW requirements pertain to this task.
4. Include a plan for maintaining existing and new technologies, and phasing out obsolete technologies.
Sample Task 3 (oral):
SimLabs consists of four separate facilities (VMSC, CVSRF, FFC, ATC Lab). These facilities were initially managed separately but have since been merged into the current
SimLabs. As a result, each has its own inherited system of forms (e.g., simulation request form), processes (e.g. simulation development and documentation), and configuration management tools (e.g., software/hardware version control system).
Operations could be more efficient if SimLabs had a system of common forms, processes, and configuration management tools.
context of, and cross references to, the SOW and describe a general approach to achieving consistency while respecting the inherent differences among the facilities. The response must:
2. Identify top constraints and risks. When appropriate, the Offeror should explain how risks will be minimized and how trade-offs between cost, schedule, and technical approach will be considered.
3. Identify possible opportunities for innovative technology solutions.
4. Include an approach for implementation.
After initiation of the effort, there is a mandated policy change from Headquarters that potentially adds 15% to the workload of critical, highly skilled workers. The additional workload involves documentation and additional process steps. The mandate does not come with additional funding. What options would you consider to accommodate the additional workload?
Sample Task 4 (oral):
NASA is interested in developing a collaborative modeling capability that will allow multiple researchers from around the country to jointly develop an aircraft simulation for testing. Once this capability is developed it will be used throughout the agency to develop and test such things as aircraft performance, engine performance, and handing qualities throughout the flight envelope. In addition, NASA would like to be able to run any models developed in multiple flight simulators throughout the agency. SimLabs has been tasked with setting up the architecture for this capability.

should explain how risks will be minimized and how trade-offs between cost, schedule, and technical approach will be considered.
