LANDING CRAFT AIR CUSHION FULL MISSION TRAINER (LCAC FMT)
DEVICE 20G6, SERIAL NUMBER 1
1.0 DESCRIPTION. The Landing Craft Air Cushion - Full Mission Trainer (LCAC-FMT), 20G6, is a fully operational LCAC underway control and systems device. It includes a trainee station with operator, engineer, navigator, and group commander positions, a visual system, motion system, instructor station, a computer complex, and power distribution. The device simulates not only the response of the
LCAC overland and over water characteristics and craft systems, but the visual, aural, and environmental sensations as well. It also provides features in the motion system that responds to simulated environmental conditions and control inputs. Visual databases are provided for four (4) separate areas.
The visual scenes represent Open Ocean, surf, harbor areas, beaches, overland offload sites, ramp and apron areas, surrounding terrain and cultural features, support ships, and civilian and military craft and targets. The scenes are valid from engine start through lift-off, hover, departure from land to water, approach and landing to support ship, launch and departure from support ship, and landing from water to land. Aural effects such as engine noise and rotating machinery are simulated. LCAC-FMT consist of the following:
1.1 TRAINEE STATION. Trainee performance is monitored and recorded by the device for post-exercise evaluation.
1.2 INSTRUCTOR OPERATOR STATION (IOS). The IOS features include the capability to operate in run mode in which training is under the direct control of an instructor at the Instructor Operator
Stations (IOS). At their discretion, simulator malfunctions can be inserted or removed and meteorological effects can be tailored to suit a variety of training requirements. The capability for ownership record and playback as target LCAC is provided. Parameter record is available, along with hard copy printout of IOS flat screen monitor displays.
1.3 COMPUTER SYSTEM. The device consists of the Motion Cabinet (Unit 3), System Electrical
Bypass (Unit 11), Visual Image Generator Rack (Unit 20), Host Computer/IOS Rack (Unit 10), Host
Printer (Unit 29), System Rack #1 (Unit 30), System Rack #2 (Unit 31), AC Power Distribution Unit
(Unit 33), Emergency Off Bus (Unit 54), Motion Power Transformer (Unit 55), Host Ethernet Switch
(Unit 56), and 4- Port KVM Switch (Unit 58).
1.4 VISUAL SYSTEM. The major components of the Visual System are three (3) Digital Projection dVision 35 WQXGA LED projectors; with three (3) DP optical blend plate system per projector and auto-alignment/projector control laptop, one (1) Mission Function computer and four (4) Visual Image
Generators (IGs), and a Visual Display. These components together produce real-time out-of-window scenes of colored surfaces and lights representing the visual environment. The Visual System responds to
LCAC simulator data defining viewing conditions and provides video signals to the image display to present corresponding updated images to the crew trainees. The system provides a continuous, full color, collimated image, including complete cross-cabin views, to the LCAC crew.
1.4.1 The visual system provides scenes that support training in overwater operations, visual launch and departure from land and ship, and open water operations in various light conditions (pre-dawn, dawn, day, dusk, and night) for both clear and degraded visibility. Hardware-implemented animation techniques provide realistic visual wave motion. The image display is produced by three (3) projectors and off-axis collimation optics consisting of a rear projection screen and a mirror to produce a virtual image at infinity.
1.4.2 The visual display consists of projector units, edge blend units, collimating mirror, sensor unit, mirror pump, vacuum valve assembly, mirror power supply unit, remote control unit, and back projection
DEVICE 20G6, SERIAL NUMBER 1
screen. The components that are of particular interest to the instructor are described in the following paragraphs.
1.4.3 The visual projectors are three identical projector units mounted above the Student Station on adjustable pan-and-tilt mechanisms; fixed mountings.
1.4.4 The Collimating Mirror is a thin elastic membrane of aluminized polyester stretched over an air tight box and the air within the box partially evacuated the membrane then forms a curved surface closely approximating a sphere. The mirror extends around the front of the simulator fuselage to give an uninterrupted field of view of 170 degrees horizontally and 40 degrees vertically (+15 degrees up, -25 degrees down).
1.4.5 The Back Projection Screen produces a real image from the three projectors and directs the light to the collimating mirror and into the cockpit area.
1.5 MOTION SYSTEM. The Motion System consists of the Moog Next Generation Electric
Motion System, which encompasses the Motion System Supply Scope (Motion Cabinet, Base Joints, Axel Joints, Actuators and Drawbridge). The Motion Base is designed to provide the 6 Degrees of
Freedom (6 DOF), necessary to simulate actual aircraft craft/hovercraft motion. The 6 DOF are longitudinal, lateral, heave, yaw, pitch, and roll. It provides correct correlation of the Trainee Station motion and visual cues.
