About this file

This document is a Monthly Progress Summary Report for the Biosparge System Operations, Maintenance, and Monitoring (OM&M) at Naval Submarine Base New London in Groton, Connecticut, prepared by KOMAN Government Solutions, LLC/Trinity (KGS/Trinity) for the month of May 2025. The report details the ongoing environmental remediation efforts, focusing on light non-aqueous phase liquid (LNAPL) monitoring and recovery across multiple monitoring wells (1MW4, 1MW10, 1MW11, and TMW5). Key activities in May 2025 included weekly remote system performance checks, an on-site maintenance round on May 7th, and LNAPL gauging and recovery, with a total of 0.5, 0.5, and 1.0 gallons of LNAPL removed from 1MW4, 1MW11, and TMW5, respectively.

The report highlights several issues and concerns, including partially inaccessible wells (BSW-01 and BSW-02) due to asphalt patches and a non-functioning well (BSW-26) suspected of having air line damage during recent re-paving. The team also completed a wooden structure repair behind the Conex box, replacing the existing structure with pressure-treated materials and adding asphalt starting shingles for non-slip grip. The next system maintenance round is tentatively scheduled for June 10, 2025, which will include LNAPL gauging, recovery, and an inspection of BSW-26 using a downhole camera. To date, a total of 80.65 gallons of LNAPL have been removed from the site.

RE: Monthly Progress Summary Report – May 2025

Zones 1 and 2 Biosparge System Operations, Maintenance, and Monitoring (OM&M) Naval Submarine Base New London, Groton, CT Contract# N4008523D0073/Task Order# N4008524F6461

Dear Mr. Bray, KOMAN Government Solutions, LLC/Trinity (KGS/Trinity) is pleased to provide this May 2025 Monthly Progress Summary Report, detailing a summary on the Operations, Maintenance, and Monitoring (OM&M) for the biosparge system located in Zone 1 and 2, Naval Submarine Base New London, Groton, CT:

1. OM&M Activities – May 2025

a. Performed weekly remote checks on system performance.

b. On-site system maintenance round was completed on 07 May 2025.

i. KGS/Trinity tech recorded observations.

1. Observations attached.

c. Overall, the system is running as designed.

d. The desired flowrate of 4.0 actual cubic feet per minute (acfm) at BSW-01 to BSW-12 was achieved.

e. The desired flowrate of 3.0 acfm at BSW-13 through BSW-30 was mostly achieved, with the exception at BSW-26. It has now been at least 7 months since this well has not received the flow. There is a new asphalt patch in the vicinity of BSW-26 performed by another contractor. It is suspected that during asphalt paving, damage to the air line may have occurred. Further discussions on repair are warranted.

f. The wooden structure that protects the above ground poly vinyl chloride (PVC) air lines behind the Conex box was replaced with pressure treated (outdoor rated) materials on 27 May 2025. Asphalt starting shingles were placed on the finished floor to provide a non-slip grip. Refer to photolog attached to this monthly report.

g. Light non-aqueous phase liquid (LNAPL) gauging occurred on 07 May 2025. LNAPL was detected in monitoring well TMW5 at an estimated thickness of 1.06 feet. A sheen was noted on the measuring probe for 1MW4 and 1MW11.

h. LNAPL recovery at 1MW4, 1MW11, and TMW5 was conducted on 07 May 2025. A peristaltic pump was used to recover 0.5, 0.5, and 1.0 gallons of LNAPL, respectively. To date, 80.65-gallons of LNAPL have been removed at the site. A tracking summary sheet is provided as an attachment to this monthly report.

2. Submittals

a. April 2025 Monthly Report - 01 May 2025.

KOMAN Government Solutions, LLC Subsidiary of the Natives of Kodiak

3. Next Month (June 2025) Planned O&MM Activities

b. Next System Maintenance Round is tentatively scheduled for 10 June 2025. This will include:

1. LNAPL gauging and recovery.

c. Inspect BSW-26 with a downhole camera to try and determine why there is no flow.

4. Issues and Concerns

d. BSW-01 remains inaccessible due to a partial asphalt patch over the well cover.

i. Update 05 June 2025. Although inaccessible, air has been turned back on to this well but may not be getting into this well. Repair of biosparge well substructures are not within the scope of this current contract.

e. BSW-02 remains inaccessible due to a partial asphalt patch over the well cover as denoted in the June Monthly O&M Report. This well is receiving and maintaining the required flowrate.

f. BSW-26 is not receiving flow. It is suspected that the air line may have been damaged during a recent re-paving effort (performed by another contractor). Repair of biosparge substructures is not within the scope of the current contract.

g. As indicated in the January 2023 Monthly report, 1MW9 had been destroyed by others during an excavation to repair a main water line by another contractor. Recommend installing a replacement well as this well serves to monitor concentrations just before they enter the Thames River. Well installations are not within the scope of the current contract.
