2.7.1.1 Ductwork Sheet-Metal Thickness and Reinforcement:

a. Duct, housings and equipment upstream of the Recirculation Fan shall be designed to withstand negative fan pressure as indicated on the design drawings. Choose gage thickness of interior return ductwork to minimize the need for reinforcements. Reinforcements on Interior return ductwork shall be fully welded to the ductwork (on each side of the reinforcement flange) to eliminate crevices between the reinforcement and duct.

1. Rectangular Ductwork under Negative Pressure

A. For rectangular ductwork under negative pressure, sheet metal thickness shall be as specified in Table 5.3 of DOE HDBK 1169-2003 and no less than 16 gauge.

The typographical errors in Table 5.3 shall be taken into account. Take into account the error at the top (header) of Table

5.3. "14 in." should be "24 in."

B. For rectangular duct under negative pressure, reinforcement shall be as specified in Table 5.4 of DOE-HDBK 1169-2003 and no less than 16 gauge.

The typographical errors in Table 5.4 shall be taken into account.

On Table 5.4, the "12 in. by" column heading covers 12 inches to 60 inches, and the "24 in. by" column heading covers 24 inches to 60 inches. The note "E = 1 x 1 x 1 3/16" should read "E = 1 x 1 x 3/16".

A flange may be counted as a reinforcement if it meets the strength requirements of a reinforcement as defined in DOE HDBK 1169 2003.

SECTION 23 00 00 Page 9

C. Duct flanges to connect sections of duct must be 1/4 inch thick minimum.

2. Round Ductwork under Negative Pressure

A. For round ductwork under negative pressure, sheet-metal thickness shall be as specified in Table 5.1 of DOE HDBK 1169-2003, and no less than 16 gauge.

B. For round ductwork under negative pressure, reinforcement shall be as specified in Table 5.2 of DOE-HDBK 1169-2003 and no less than 16 gauge. A flange may be counted as a reinforcement if it meets the strength requirements of a reinforcement as defined in

DOE HDBK 1169 2003.

3. Grille Plenums: Build to the ratings in Tables 5.3 and 5.4 of the DOE HNBK 1169-2003, to meet the negative fan pressure as indicated on the drawings, and at least 16 gauge for good welding results.

The return grille shall also meet this rating, to not collapse or be damaged during the DALT process.

b. For round ductwork under positive pressure, sheet-metal thickness shall be no less than 16 gauge. For rectangular ductwork under positive pressure, sheet-metal thickness shall be no less than 16 gauge.

d. Exhaust duct and components shall be designed to withstand positive fan pressure as indicated on the design drawings.

2.7.1.2 Ductwork Details

a. Sealants are not allowed. RTV caulking, adhesives, sealant, or other similar products are not permitted to be used to smooth or seal any duct surface or joint. A minimal amount of adhesive is permitted to adhere flanged gaskets to a flanged face to facilitate joint makeup;

however application is limited to mating surface between the flange and gasket such that it does not aid in sealing the joint. Adhesive backed tape may be used on external duct surfaces to seal longitudinal seams on SMACNA ductwork.

SECTION 23 00 00 Page 10

The special case is a Level 4 flange that cannot be fully welded on the external surface. Approval is required to allow these flanges.

After successful DALT results, the external weld on each Level 4 component flange shall be sealed with 3M Marine Grade Silicone Sealant. The sealant shall cover the entire exterior seam, not just the gaps between stitch welds. This is intended to prevent water from pooling or collecting between the exterior stitch welds. This includes dampers, filter housings, and air flow measuring stations.

Request written approval before applying sealant.

b. Material for ductwork and ductwork supports shall be capable of meeting all requirements of Article SA-4000 of ASME AG-1-2019.

Materials shall be in conformance with the ASTM materials listed in Table AA-3100 of ASME AG-1-2019. Materials selected shall be evaluated for suitability with service conditions and compatibility with other materials used in duct construction.

c. Duct shall be fabricated from unpainted Type 304 stainless steel sheet / plate / shapes meeting ASTM A240 or ASTM A276, as applicable.

d. A grade designation is usually required to determine the minimum strength of the material. If the specific grade material has an assigned minimum yield and tensile strength, these values shall be used for design purposes. If values have not been established and assigned, then tests in accordance with the procedures outlined in Article AA-3000 of ASME AG-1-2019 shall be performed to ensure that the strength of the material meets the required design stress values.

e. Ductwork and ductwork supports shall be designed in accordance with the requirements of Article AA-4000 and SA-4000 of ASME AG-1-2019.

f. Measures shall be established for controlling and identifying material substitutions throughout the manufacturing and installation process.

Substitute materials shall be equivalent, or exceed the requirements of Table AA-3100 of ASME AG-1-2019, as determined by the Government.

g. Where space permits, round duct is preferred over rectangular duct because round duct is stronger (particularly under negative or collapsing pressure); is more economical for the high-pressure construction often required for nuclear applications; provides more uniform airflow; and is easier to join and seal than a rectangular duct.

h. Provide radius type elbows with a centerline radius of 1.5 times the width or diameter of the duct where space permits. Otherwise, elbows having a minimum radius equal to the width or diameter of the duct are allowed.

i. Duct branches shall turn through no more than 45º.

j. Duct transitions shall be symmetrical about the axis of air flow , except for the filter housings .

k. If symmetrical duct transitions are not possible due to interference with other equipment, smooth duct wall contours, or other design features shall be used to maintain even air distribution within the duct.

l. The pressure boundary portion of duct transitions shall be designed

SECTION 23 00 00 Page 11 with internal angles less than or equal to 45º when measured from a plane parallel to the direction of air flow.

m. Duct shall be fabricated from unpainted Type 304 stainless steel sheet / plate / shapes meeting ASTM A240 or ASTM A276, as applicable.

n. Duct shall be continuously welded on all pressure boundary joints and seams in accordance with American Welding Society (AWS) procedure D9.1-1990, “Sheet Metal Welding Code”.

o. All welders shall be qualified to AWS D9.1 and all welds shall meet the workmanship standards of AWS D9.1.

p. Joints and seams requiring only intermittent welds, such as reinforcement members or splitter vanes, shall be intermittently welded.

q. All weld joints and seams that are a portion of any gasket seating surface shall be ground smooth and flush with adjacent base metals.

r. All burrs and weld spatter shall be removed.

s. A grade designation is usually required to determine the minimum strength of the material. If the specific grade material has an assigned minimum yield and tensile strength, these values shall be used for design purposes. If values have not been established and assigned, then tests in accordance with the procedures outlined in Article AA-3000 of ASME AG-1-2019 shall be performed to ensure that the strength of the material meets the required design stress values.

t. Ductwork and ductwork supports shall be designed in accordance with the requirements of Article AA-4000 and SA-4000 of ASME AG-1-2019.

u. Measures shall be established for controlling and identifying material substitutions throughout the manufacturing and installation process.

Substitute materials shall be equivalent, or exceed the requirements of Table AA-3100 of ASME AG-1-2019, as determined by the government.

w. Ducting section interface joints may be straight welded joints which are assembled onsite, forming a continuous ducting section or fabricated as sections with welded flanges to be assembled on site.

All welded joints shall be included in the DALT and therefore welding for each test section must be complete prior to performing DALT.

Sealing of test boundaries for each section is only permitted at flanged joints.

x. Ducting section interface joints may be straight welded joints which are assembled onsite, forming a continuous ducting section or fabricated as sections with welded flanges to be assembled on site.

All welded joints shall be included in the DALT and therefore welding for each test section must be complete prior to performing DALT.

Sealing of test boundaries for each section is only permitted at flanged joints.

y. xProvide duct test ports that can be accessed without disturbing the duct insulation. No test ports shall be created without Shipyard approval of the test port location, and design.

SECTION 23 00 00 Page 12

2.7.1.3 Flanged Joint Requirements:

a. At a minimum, flanged joints must be present, adjacent to the exterior wall surface of each ducting wall penetration, with adequate clearance around joint to access all fastening hardware once wall construction and insulated panel installation is complete. Refer to design drawings for minimum mandatory flanged joint locations. Duct-to-Facility connections/joint make-up shall be independent of the fasteners that are used for ductwork joint make-up (i.e., Removal of fasteners that secure ductwork to the facility shall not result in a breach of the ductwork).
