Readme Document

This document provides the steps required to load the CMIS Software User Manual (SUM) V5.2 files and the linked images for the document on a PC. This text is located on the SUM diskette as V52_READ.DOC.

The SUM is divided into 36 document files: a table of contents front matter document called V52S_TOC.DOC; one document for each of the 21 sections of the SUM update, called V52SUM01.DOC through V52SUM21.DOC; one document for each of the 11 appendices, called V52SUMXA.DOC through V52SUMXK.DOC; an index, called V52S_IDX.DOC, a binder cover page with spine called V52S_COV.DOC, and this readme file. These files are compressed and saved as a self-extracting file named SUM_V52.EXE. The SUM sections are viewed and printed with linked bit mapped (BMP) or metafile (WMF) images from a separate image directory. There are currently 165 image files and 3 graphics files that occupy over 41 megabytes of hard disk space. The images are distributed in a compressed file named IMAGES52.ZIP.

To print the SUM (with linked figures) using MS Word, it is necessary to have an [IMAGES] directory nested within the [SUM] document directory containing all the expanded bit mapped image files. One way to do this is to create a [SUM] directory on your C: drive at the root level and then create an [IMAGES] directory within the [SUM] directory. Copy and expand or unzip the text files into the [SUM] directory and the image files into the [IMAGES] directory.

Create the following directories:

· c:\sum

· c:\sum\images

· Copy the self-extracting executable file SUM_V52.EXE to the c:\sum directory and then launch it to expand the files. Delete the file SUM_V52.EXE.

· Copy the figures file IMAGES52.ZIP to the c:\sum\images directory and then launch PKUNZIP in DOS or WINZIP in Windows to extract the image files. When fully expanded, these files occupy over 41 MB of disk space. Delete the file IMAGES52.ZIP.

The SUM sections are now ready to be opened using MS Word 6.0 or greater. If figures appear as empty boxes, refer to Section 21.4 for information on updating image link paths.

The CMIS System Functional Map referenced in Appendix H is provided in soft copy only. In order to print the full size map, it is necessary to have a graphics application capable of importing Adobe Illustrator Version 7.0 formatted files. The system map files, including an Adobe Reader .pdf version, are located on the IMAGES52 diskette as APPX_H.ZIP. Refer to Appendix H for details.

CMIS supports the configuration, engineering and technical data management functions of the Department of Defense (DoD) community with a standard Automated Information System (AIS).xe "Version:CMIS"

1.2 System Overview

CMIS is an automated Configuration Management (CM) tool provided to Components of the Department of Defense. CMIS adheres to required functional CM business practices, is user friendly, and is built using an open systems architecture. CMIS uses a relational database that organizes data into tables and columns for rapid query and retrieval. CMIS V5.2 is Year 2000 (Y2K) compliant and can successfully store and process data containing dates in both the 20th and the 21st centuries, separately or together.

CMIS was originally designed for the Military Sealift Command (MSC) as a tool to manage the logistics support and configuration of MSC’s fleet. MSC began using CMIS in January of 1991. In early 1991, the Corporate Information Management (CIM) Executive Agent (EA) conducted a run-off of 15 CM applications. After the run-off ended in June of 1991, the DoD Logistics Standard Information System (LSIS) selected CMIS as Best of Breed for its functional capability, user friendliness, and open systems architecture. This achievement was presented in the LSIS Acquisition Materiel Management Engineering and Technical Support Concept Plan.

In 1992, the Joint Logistics Systems Center (JLSC) designated CMIS as a Near Term Initiative (NTI). In October of 1994, the Assistant Secretary of Defense (ASD), Command, Control, Communications, and Intelligence (C3I) designated CMIS as one of the DoD standard migratory systems within the Material Management System (MMS) suite. CMIS completed Operational Assessment (OA) in January 1998 and received Milestone III approval in April 1998, from the Major Automated Information System Review Council (MAISRC), to deploy CMIS to operational sites.

The operation of CMIS is the responsibility of the System Administrator (SA) at the installed site. The maintenance of CMIS is based on the collection of Software Problem Reports (SPRs) and Software Change Requests (SCRs) that the Components submit to JLSC. The JLSC analyzes and approves Engineering Change Proposals (ECPs) for inclusion in future versions of CMIS. New versions of CMIS are released based on direction from the JLSC and the criticality of the SPRs and SCRs.

The JLSC Program Management Directorate (PMM) manages all requirements for CMIS. A Functional Configuration Control Board (FCCB) validates these requirements for implementation in future CMIS releases. The JLSC PMM is the acquirer and project sponsor for CMIS. The BDM Enterprise Integration Team developed CMIS. CMIS users are the DoD Components.

1.3 Document Overview

The purpose of the SUM is to describe general CMIS processing capabilities, conventions, and procedures, and to serve as a cross-reference document for top-level CMIS Main Menu topics.

The SUM is divided into 21 major sections. Sections 1 through 5 introduce the user to CMIS, provide an overview of the Main Menu modules and topic windows, describe how to begin using CMIS, and list additional basic features. Sections 6 through 20 provide detailed coverage of each of the 15 CMIS Main Menu modules and their related menu topic windows. Section 21 contains general information notes to aid in the use of this manual.

The SUM also contains an index that provides an alphabetic listing of key terms and concepts covered in the document. In addition, the SUM contains appendices used to provide information about specific acronyms, terms, error messages, report types, documented software files, and the Multi-user Engineering Channge Proposal Automated Review System (MEARS) software application interface. Refer to Appendix I–Introduction to MEARS Software.

Upon direction from JLSC, functionality for the following interfaces has not been fully maintained in CMIS V5.2:

· Data Item Description (DI-E-1101C) “1101C Configuration Status Accounting and Engineering Records”

· Commodity Command Standard System (CCSS)

· Digital Storage and Retrieval Engineering Data System (DSREDS)

· Information Handling Services (IHS)

· CMIS Data Transfer Utility (CDTU)

· Joint Computer-aided Acquisition and Logistics Support (JCALS)

References to waived or deferred interfaces are shown with a gray shading to indicate that they are not applicable in current lifecycle documentation.

There are no security or privacy considerations associated with the use of this document.
