About this file
This memorandum provides the final structural pavement recommendations for rehabilitating a section of roadway within Glacier National Park. The project will rehabilitate the final 9.3 miles of the Going-to-the-Sun Road and replace the McDonald Creek Bridge. Subgrade investigations indicated existing asphalt pavement depths between 6 to 9 inches with primarily granular base and subgrade materials. The recommended roadway structure includes milling 2 inches of the existing asphalt, full depth reclamation to pulverize any remaining pavement and provide a uniform base, and placement of 6 inches of new asphalt concrete pavement using a -inch or -inch nominal maximum size aggregate and 0.3 to 0.5% asphalt binder. The solicitation was issued by the Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration to rehabilitate this section of the Going-to-the-Sun Road and replace the McDonald Creek Bridge within Glacier National Park.

Final Structural Pavement Recommendation Lake McDonald Utility Relocation / Upper McDonald Creek Bridge Replacement
MT PRA GLAC 10(44) / MT PRA GLAC 10(45)
Project Information This memorandum provides the final structural pavement recommendations for the Lake McDonald roadway rehabilitation. The scope of the project has changed and additional information is provided in this memorandum. The Park has allocated additional funding to this roadway segment to provide a full rehabilitation of the roadway and address isolated shoulder widening to mitigate vehicle off-tracking. The overall final elevation of the roadway will be decreased by 2 inches to facilitate the widening and provide an opportunity to address the roadway profile.
A subgrade investigation was conducted in October 2019. Boring logs indicated existing asphalt concrete pavement depths between 6 to 9 inches, with the majority of the depths being 7 inches. The base and subgrade materials were described primarily as well graded gravel with sand and silty sand with gravel. These descriptions indicate good granular material to provide support for the pavement structure.
The following are the recommended roadway structures.
Going to the Sun Road The existing asphalt concrete pavement has performed well under the current conditions. This indicates the base and subbase materials are providing adequate support for the structure. Asphalt pavement milling is required to reduce the overall final elevation of the roadway 2 inches and to provide enough room for the construction of the new asphalt concrete pavement. A full depth reclamation technique will be utilized to pulverize any remaining existing asphalt concrete pavement and to provide a uniform base structure prior to placement of the new asphalt concrete pavement.
6 inches – Asphalt Concrete Pavement, ½-inch or ¾-inch nominal maximum size aggregate, 0.3 to <3 million ESAL (Section 401, estimated @ 1.94 tons/cuyd)
6 inches - Full Depth Reclamation (Section 304) 8 inches - Asphalt Pavement Milling (Section 413)
Kelly Camp Road Reconstruction of Kelly Camp Road typical section will follow the final structural recommendations for the MT PRA GLAC 10(30) project dated December 23, 2015.
6 inches – Asphalt Concrete Pavement, ½-inch or ¾-inch nominal maximum size aggregate, 0.3 to <3 million ESAL (Section 401, estimated @ 1.94 tons/cuyd)
8 inches – Recycled Aggregate Base (Section 308, estimated @ 1.97 tons/cuyd) 12 inches - Select Borrow (Section 204)
It is advantageous to reuse the existing asphalt pavement within the pavement structure from the material generated from the Lake McDonald segment. The surface layer of the asphalt concrete pavement should be milled and stockpiled for use as recycled aggregate base. The millings can also be used in lieu of the select borrow specified for the Kelly Camp Road.
Specifications The asphalt concrete pavement will be placed in two equal lifts. The pavement roughness designation will by Type III.
The binder grade is designated as PG 58-34.
Items of work required in conjunction with the pavement structure:
Antistrip Additive, Type 3 (estimated @ 1 percent by weight of Asphalt Concrete Pavement) Tack Coat (estimated at 0.10 gal/sqyd, 240 gal/ton. One application will be required between lifts of asphalt concrete pavement.
