Site Description: The proposed project includes the replacement of the existing timber multi-span bridge over McDonald Creek with a concrete single-span bridge. The project begins near the intersections of Upper McDonald Creek Road and Going-to-the-Sun Road (GTSR) and ends at the intersection of Upper McDonald Creek Road and McDonald Creek Trailhead. In addition to new bridge construction, the project includes clearing, excavation, grading, drainage, aggregate base and asphalt surface course, guardrail, revegetation, piling, concrete, existing bridge demolition, and utility relocation.
The project also includes incorporating a Full Depth Reclamation (FDR) with select curve enhancements on GTSR along Lake McDonald and layout for two fiber line extensions along GTSR and Camas Road. The project will also revegetate areas disturbed during the construction of activities described in Permit MTR108628 that were not completed as part of the Lake McDonald Utility Relocation Project (MT PRA GLAC 10(44)).
The Project (Rehabilitate 9.3 miles of GTSR) will manage the disposal of the pavement milling material through its construction project and plan to deposit 2,000 yards of milled material at the West Ballfield Pit (Latitude 48° 30’ 35.04”N, Longitude 113° 59’ 23.28”W) within Glacier National Park for future Park uses. 12,000 yards of the milled material will be stockpiled at the Flathead National Forest Demers Pit (Latitude 48° 39’ 14.15”N, Longitude 114° 10’ 50.67”W). Demers Pit is under Flathead County Public Works control of use. This stockpiled material will be used in 2023 as part of the resurfacing and dust abatement measures for Glacier Drive, Mile Post 0.2-0.8; part of the North Fork Flathead River Project MT FLATHEAD 486(1)

existing vegetation: Vegetation in the project area is primarily associated with the Rocky Mountain Mesic Montane Mixed Conifer Forest and Rocky Mountain Dry-Mesic Mixed Conifer Forest systems. These forest systems are characterized by lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta), western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla), Engelmann spruce (Picea engelmannii), white spruce (Picea glauca), western red cedar (Thuja plicata), larch (Larix occidentalis), black cottonwood (Populus balsamifera), riparian, and meadow species. The understory is comprised of a mixture of shrubs, herbaceous plants, and grasses tolerant of warmer and drier soil conditions. Slopes immediately adjacent to the roadway are typically grass covered with isolated rock outcrops and areas of shrubs and deciduous and conifers encroaching on the roadway.

ActivitySchedule: Rehabilitate Going-to-the-Sun Road
Timeframe: April 1, 2022 to November 15, 2022 Associated Activities: incorporating a Full Depth Reclamation (FDR) with select curve enhancements. Final Stabilization of areas of disturbance associated with construction activities described in Permit MTR108628 that were not completed as part of the Lake McDonald Utility Relocation Project (MT PRA GLAC 10(44) and areas of disturbance associated with this project.
Replacement of McDonald Creek Bridge Timeframe: April 1, 2022 to November 15, 2022 Associated Activities: Replacement of the existing Upper McDonald Creek Bridge with a new single span bridge, removal of the existing timber multi-span bridge, clearing, excavation, grading, drainage, aggregate base and asphalt surface course, guardrail, revegetation, piling, concrete, riprap placement, and utility relocation.
Fiber Optic Installation Timeframe: April 1, 2022 to November 15, 2022 Associated Activities: fiber optic line extensions
FinalStabilization: Disturbed areas during this project which are not paved, concrete, or gravel surfaced will be seeded, fertilized and mulched. Areas disturbed during the construction of activities described in Permit MTR108628 that were not completed as part of the Lake McDonald Utility Relocation Project (MT PRA GLAC 10(44) will also be seeded, fertilized, and mulched. Exposed soils will be seeded with suitable native plants as soon as practicable to facilitate rapid vegetative recovery of disturbed areas and prevent invasion by noxious weeds.
