About this file
These are record drawings for a fire alarm system replacement project at the VA Walla Walla Medical Center, specifically for Building 49. The project involves replacing the existing campus fire alarm system with a new Notifier addressable fire alarm system, including new fiber optic cabling infrastructure, fire alarm control panels, and campus-wide monitoring capabilities. The system will include voice evacuation notification appliances, HVAC unit control, elevator recall functions, sprinkler system monitoring, smoke and heat detectors, manual pull stations, and central station monitoring. The drawings detail the fire alarm system components for the building's basement, first floor, and second floor, with specific device placement, wiring diagrams, and technical specifications for a comprehensive fire safety upgrade.

Fire Alarm Control Panel Terminations:
All wiring runs shown on the fire alarm shop drawings are conceptual only. They do not and are not intended to be actual wire runs or conduit runs. Device interconnect is intended to show only sequence of device connections and type of wire.
Please review both the floor plans and the riser diagram drawings to resolve any conflicts or questions that may come up. If the drawings do not answer your questions, please call Vulcan Fire for help to answer your questions.
Electrical Contractor is advised not to complete terminations at the Fire Alarm Control Panel. Terminations will be completed by a qualified Vulcan Fire Technician.

Scope of Work:
The scope of work for this project is to replace the existing campus fire alarm system with a new fire alarm system throughout. The existing copper cabling backbone infrastructure will be replaced with new fiber optic cabling. Each building will be provided with new fire alarm control panels connected to the campus network. A new campus wide computer monitoring and control system will be provided in Building 78.
Existing fire alarm devices such as pull stations, detectors, relay modules, monitor modules, flow and tamper switch interfaces, and associated conduit, boxes and cabling shall be demolished and replaced with new devices.
Building 48 Fire Alarm System:
The new Notifier fire alarm system in Building 48 will be replacing the existing fire alarm system. Voice evacuation notification appliances will be installed throughout the entire building, which will alert the occupants in the event of a fire. The FACP will provide control over the HVAC units and elevator recall function. The FACP will provide monitoring of the fire sprinkler system. Smoke and Heat Detectors will be installed where required per codes.
New manual pull station will be installed at building exits.
The fire sprinkler tamper switches will cause a supervisory signal when activated. These devices will report as a supervisory signal.
The fire alarm system shall be monitored through a central monitoring company of the owners choosing prior to the final inspection.

* After each duct smoke detector has been installed use a Megnehelic Test Instrument to verify adequate air flow, show the results on the Shop Drawings for the AHJ's review.
* Tap all speakers at 1/2 watt - 25 volts unless otherwise indicated at individual device.
* Contractor may reuse existing pathways where available. Verify with system designer prior to adding additional devices or extending circuits to ensure voltage drop calculations are within acceptable limits.
1) Section of NFPA 72, National Fire Alarm Code requires units to be provided with smoke detection in areas that are not continuously occupied.
2) Provide Dedicated 120VAC circuit to the FACP label the Dedicated circuit breaker "Fire Alarm." In red with lockout. Location of breaker shall be noted at FACP.
3) Fiber Network routing to be field coordinated.
4) Detector is to activate Elevator Recall Functions.
5) Detector is to activate Elevator Shunt Trip. Mount within 24" of Sprinkler
Head.
6) Visual Notification omitted in areas without existing devices or ADA requirements to comply with VA Fire Protection Manual Section 7.3.F.l.4.
Field verify single person offices with hearing-impaired occupants.
7) Building basement is a confined entry, non-occupied space.

VOLTAGE DROPS ARE CALCULATED AT 16VDC.
L= ONE WAY LENGTH OF CIRCUIT(FEET)
WHERE VD= VOLTAGE DROP
R= 3.19 OHMS PER THOUSAND
I= LOAD CURRENT(AMPERES)
AFTER DETERMINING THE LENGTH OF THE HORN/STROBE CIRCUIT, USE
THE FOLLOWING FORMULA TO CALCULATE THE VOLTAGE DROP.
2xLxRxIVD=
LUMP SUM METHOD WAS USED TO CALCULATE ALLOWABLE VOLTAGE DROP. THIS METHOD
ALLOWS FOR A SMALL MARGIN OF SAFETY, TAKING INTO CONSIDERATION THE ACTUAL
CIRCUIT ROUTING MAY DIFFER FROM WHAT IS SHOWN ON THE SHOP SUBMITTAL
DRAWINGS. IF ACTUAL CIRCUIT LENGTH IS GOING TO EXCEED THE MAXIMUM ALLOWABLE
CIRCUIT LENGTH, CONTACT VULCAN FIRE.
VOLTAGE-DROP CALCULATION NOTE:
** STARTING VOLTAGE-DROP CALCULATIONS IS 20.4 PER UL 864, 9TH EDITION STANDARDS FOR FIRE ALARM
CONTROL PANELS.
