About this file

These are record drawings for a Fire Alarm System Replacement project at the VA Walla Walla Medical Center, Building 65, located at 77 Wainwright Drive in Walla Walla, Washington. The project involves replacing the existing campus fire alarm system with a new addressable Notifier fire alarm system, which includes installing voice evacuation notification appliances throughout the building, new manual pull stations, smoke and heat detectors, and fire sprinkler system monitoring devices. The system will transmit alarm, supervisory, and trouble conditions via cellular communicator to a UL Class 1 Central Station and will be connected to the campus network with monitoring in Building 78.

The technical specifications indicate the system will be a new addressable fire alarm system compliant with 2018 IBC, IFC, NFPA 101, and VA Fire Protection Manual standards. The building is classified as B (Business) and S-1 (Storage) occupancy, fully fire sprinklered, with one story plus an unoccupied basement. The system will use Class B wiring for initiating device circuits, notification appliance circuits, and signaling line circuits, with intelligent addressable devices placed in temperature-controlled environments. The project is part of a larger campus-wide fire life safety upgrade, with Vulcan Fire as the designing contractor.

Scope of Work:

All wiring runs shown on the fire alarm shop drawings are conceptual only. They do not and are not intended to be actual wire runs or conduit runs. Device interconnect is intended to show only sequence of device connections and type of wire.

Please review both the floor plans and the riser diagram drawings to resolve any conflicts or questions that may come up. If the drawings do not answer your questions, please call Vulcan Fire for help to answer your questions.

Electrical Contractor is advised not to complete terminations at the Fire Alarm Control Panel. Terminations will be completed by a qualified Vulcan Fire Technician.

Fire Alarm System Replacement

The scope of work for this project is to replace the existing campus fire alarm system with a new fire alarm system throughout. The existing copper cabling backbone infrastructure will be replaced with new fiber optic cabling. Each building will be provided with new fire alarm control panels connected to the campus network. A new campus wide computer monitoring and control system will be provided in Building 78.

Existing fire alarm devices such as pull stations, detectors, relay modules, monitor modules, flow and tamper switch interfaces, and associated conduit, boxes and cabling shall be demolished and replaced with new devices.

Building 65 Fire Alarm System:

The new Notifier fire alarm system in Building 65 will be replacing the existing fire alarm system. Voice evacuation notification appliances will be installed throughout the entire building, which will alert the occupants in the event of a fire. The FACP will provide monitoring of the fire sprinkler system. Smoke and Heat Detectors will be installed where required per codes. New manual pull station will be installed at building exits.

The fire sprinkler tamper switches will cause a supervisory signal when activated. These devices will report as a supervisory signal.

The fire alarm system shall be monitored through a central monitoring company of the owners choosing prior to the final inspection.

N

All intelligent and or addressable Fire Alarm Devices must be placed in protected areas with ambient temperature ranging from 32° to 120°. Weatherproof Fire Alarm Devices have temperature rating from -40° to 151° in wet or dry applications.

Do not place smoke detectors within 3 feet of air supply registers and diffusers.

All intelligent devices shall be interconnected as shown on the riser on-line diagram. Each intelligent device is designed with an address. T-Tapping is permitted on SLC Loop (Class "B") only.

Wire runs show interconnected of fire alarm devices only. Wiring does not represent conduit runs.

Electrical Contractor is responsible for proper connection of equipment provided by others.

FA-1.1

Riser Diagram / Details - Fire Alarm System

VOLTAGE DROPS ARE CALCULATED AT 16VDC.

L= ONE WAY LENGTH OF CIRCUIT(FEET)

WHERE VD= VOLTAGE DROP

R= 3.19 OHMS PER THOUSAND

I= LOAD CURRENT(AMPERES)

AFTER DETERMINING THE LENGTH OF THE HORN/STROBE CIRCUIT, USE

THE FOLLOWING FORMULA TO CALCULATE THE VOLTAGE DROP.

2xLxRxIVD=

LUMP SUM METHOD WAS USED TO CALCULATE ALLOWABLE VOLTAGE DROP. THIS METHOD

ALLOWS FOR A SMALL MARGIN OF SAFETY, TAKING INTO CONSIDERATION THE ACTUAL

CIRCUIT ROUTING MAY DIFFER FROM WHAT IS SHOWN ON THE SHOP SUBMITTAL

DRAWINGS. IF ACTUAL CIRCUIT LENGTH IS GOING TO EXCEED THE MAXIMUM ALLOWABLE

CIRCUIT LENGTH, CONTACT VULCAN FIRE.

VOLTAGE-DROP CALCULATION NOTE:

** STARTING VOLTAGE-DROP CALCULATIONS IS 20.4 PER UL 864, 9TH EDITION STANDARDS FOR FIRE ALARM

CONTROL PANELS.
