Questions from FBO, 6 April 2010

Responses to Questions from FBO, 08 April 2010, in Red

58. Colored SGFT - On page A603 it says a Speckled white and a Putty that is to match the existing.

Are these correct? The spec book says 3 custom colors are to be used. Will there be something telling us what the custom colors are and where they are go to?

RESPONSE: The SGFT tiles in the Natatorium and the main Corridors are two different colors – the

Speckled white is used in the Natatorium, and the Putty color is used in the Corridors. Contractor to provide color samples for custom color and finish match approvals. These SGFT tiles must be custom manufactured to match the Gym SGFT existing tiles, with appropriate lead times.

59. Spec 04 20 00-7 talks about mortar and epoxy mortar. What is to be used? If epoxy mortar is requested where is it to be used?

RESPONSE: Epoxy mortar is used at wet locations for ceramic tiles on walls and floors, and for structural clay tile facing units.

60. Please reference the the attachment titled “Instruction to Contractors for Construction”, This document states the following:

4. SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS:

A. A detailed construction schedule must be submitted along with the contractor’s proposal.

Where should we insert this schedule in our proposal, should it go in Volume I or Volume II?

RESPONSE: The detailed construction schedule shall be included in Volume I – Price Proposal.

61. Is the final price required on the electronic copy of Volume I that is to be submitted with final proposal?

RESPONSE: The final price is required on the original hard copy and the 2 hard copies. The final price is not required on the electronic copy.

62. The Questions and Answers dated April 5 2010 item # 57 indicates we need to provide the same basic filtration system for the Polo Pool that we are providing for the Natatorium Pool. If we are to size this system for the Polo pool please provide the existing data of the existing filtration system for the

Polo Pool .

RESPONSE: Existing data is not available. Contractor to field verify the existing conditions after construction award.

63. After reading “[Specifications] Amendment 001” dated 12 January 2010 I have identified several concerns. Item #15 calls for the removal of the ladder and putting a bench along that wall as a replacement feature for the spa (whirlpool). The problems that I see occurring from this are as follows:

• No other form of egress has been offered. If interior steps are planned (although not called out in Item

# 15) standard steps have a tread run (horizontal measurement from front to rear) of a least 12” and a rise (the vertical dimension measured between treads) NOT exceeding 10” and one hand rail; and normally a clear width of 30”.

• The current design of the spa (whirlpool) allows for approximately 60 sq. ft. of surface area and the Colorado State Health allows no more than one bather per 10 sq. ft. of surface area which limits this spa (whirlpool) to a maximum of six (6) bathers at any one time. If the interior steps are required, they will intrude into the spa (whirlpool) area before meeting the landing zone on the spa floor.

If the interior steps are added this will limit the number of bathers permitted in accordance with

Colorado State Health – is this a concern for the USAFA? Note: Ladders, as a form of egress, are installed to meet the following standard -- installed no closer than 3” to the wall and no more than 5” from the wall. Also please note that any “commercial” vessel with a water depth of 2’ 0” or more must be equipped with steps or a ladder(s). As currently designed the spa (whirlpool) does not meet the standards required for commercial facilities in Colorado. Does the USAFA intend to have some form of egress from the spa (whirlpool)? If so please specify the intended form of egress.

RESPONSE: Because the ladder is required by code and is a life safety issue, the requirements in

Specifications Amendment 001, Item #15 shall be withdrawn from the project requirements. Provide a ladder in the whirlpool as indicated on architectural Sheet A404.

64. What is the expectation for the cylinder locks on the coiling doors and grilles? Section 8 door hardware page one is attached. Look at 1.02 D. I’m not quite sure how to take it. Does that mean we are to provide cylinder locks where requested but they are not regulated by this section?

RESPONSE: The text should be changed from “D. Products furnished but not installed under this

Section include:”, to read per the following - “D. Products furnished and installed under this Section include:”

65. Are the mats in the wrestling room being removed as ACM ? What is the subfloor under the Mats?

What are the mat thicknesses?

RESPONSE: The existing flooring material in Wrestling Room A175 is wood flooring and sleepers, as indicated on Sheet AD135. The wrestling mats are User equipment items, and should already be removed from the space prior to start of construction.

66. Are the unit prices required at bid time in section 012200?

RESPONSE: No unit prices are required.

67. Please advise me as to the direction that you wish me to follow. [Specifications] Amendment 001 item indicates work to be performed in Storage room A153 this is part of Phase 2 is this work now part of Phase 3.

RESPONSE: For Specifications Amendment 001, Item #27, these requirements to finish the space were added to the Phase 3 work by the Amendment. However, Item #27 should be deleted from Phase 3, as this work will be accomplished as part of a separate project.

68. Drawing A120 has a note that states "provide portland cement overlayment at slab depression to level of adjacent floor." This is due to the fact that after the wood floor is remove their will be an elevation difference between the hallway and room B212. Is the same Portland cement overlayment required where the wood floor is removed in the wrestling room? In particular new men's staff locker room area, and men's instructor locker room area where floor is not supposed to slope (refer to drawing

A401 & A402)?

RESPONSE: Yes, in both the existing Wrestling Room A175 (Sheets AD135 and AD136), and in the existing Racquetball Courts (Sheet AD120), the wood flooring and sleepers are to be demolished. The depth of the wood flooring and sleepers may not be the same at the two locations. The Portland cement overlayment required may not be the same in both locations – the scheduled floor finishes are different

(see Sheet A604), so the thickness of the Portland cement overlayment will be different, such that the top of finish floors are at the same elevation as the adjacent existing floor finishes in the final construction. The thickness of overlayments required will need to be field verified after the wood flooring and sleepers are demolished.
