SECTION 23 73 13
AIR HANDLERS
PART 1 - GENERAL
1.1 WORK INCLUDED
A. Extent of air handlers and accessories work is indicated by drawings and schedules and by requirements of this section.
B. Types of air handlers and accessories required for this project include the following:
1. Indoor Blow Thru Multi-zone Air Handler
C. Provide the following electrical work as work of this section, c in compliance with electrical specifications:
1. Air Handlers:
a. Control and interlock wiring between operating controls, indicating devices, unit temperature control panels, and fan starters.
2. Packaged Heating and Cooling Units:
a. Provide control and interlock wiring between unit-mounted control panel and thermostats, remote control panels and any other control device furnished as work of this section.
b. Provide factory mounted magnetic starter and electrical disconnect switches.
1.2 QUALITY ASSURANCE
A. Manufacturer's Qualifications: Firms regularly engaged in manufacture of air handlers, packaged heating and cooling units and fans, of types and capacities required, whose products have been in satisfactory use in similar service for not less than five (5) years.
B. Codes and Standards:
1. ARI Compliance: Test and rate air handling units in accordance with ARI 430 "Standard for
Central-Station Air Handling Units", display certification symbol on units of certified models.
2. ARI Compliance: Provide capacity ratings for packaged heating and cooling units in accordance with ARI Standard 360 "Standard for Commercial and Industrial Unitary
Air-Conditioning Equipment."
3. ASHRAE Compliance: Construct refrigerating system of packaged heating and cooling units in accordance with ASHRAE Standard 15 "Safety Code for Mechanical Refrigeration"
4. ASHRAE Compliance: Construct and install refrigerant coils in accordance with ASHRAE
Standard 15 "Safety Code for Mechanical Refrigeration".

5. AMCA Compliance: Test and rate air handling units and fans in accordance with AMCA
Standards. Fans shall bear AMCA 300 certified rating seal.
6. NFPA Compliance: Provide air handling unit internal insulation having flame spread rating not over 25 and smoke developed rating no higher than 50; and complying with NFPA 90A
"Standard for the Installation of Air Conditioning and Ventilating Systems".
7. UL and NEMA Compliance: Provide electrical components required as part of air handling units, which have been listed and labeled by UL and comply with NEMA Standards.
8. NEC Compliance: Comply with National Electrical Code (NFPA 70) as applicable to installation and electrical connections of ancillary electrical components of air handling units.
1.3 SUBMITTALS
A. Product Data: Manufacturer's technical product data, including rated capacities of selected model clearly indicated, weights, furnished specialties and accessories; and installation and start-up instructions including.
1. Psychometric chart for each coil design points and operating points.
2. Fan curves with design operating points
3. Connection requirements.
4. Sound data for discharge, radiated and return positions by octave bands.
B. Shop Drawings: Manufacturer's assembly-type shop drawings indicating dimensions, weight loadings, required clearances and methods of assembly of components.
C. Wiring Diagrams: Manufacturer's electrical requirements for power supply wiring for air handlers and packaged heating and cooling units. Manufacturer's ladder-type wiring diagrams for interlock and control wiring. Clearly differentiate between portions of wiring that are factory-installed and portions to be field-installed.
D. Maintenance Data: Submit maintenance data and parts list for unit and accessories; including
"troubleshooting" maintenance guide. Include this data and product data in maintenance manual.
1.4 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING
A. Handle units and components carefully to prevent damage, breaking, denting and scoring. Do not install damaged units or components; replace with new.
B. Store units and components in clean, dry place. Protect from weather, dirt, fumes, water, construction debris and physical damage.
C. Comply with Manufacturer's rigging and installation instructions for unloading unit and moving unit to final location for installation.
1.5 SPECIAL PROJECT WARRANTY
A. Warranty on Motor/Compressor: Provide written warranty, signed by manufacturer, agreeing to replace/repair, within warranty period, motors/compressors with inadequate and defective materials and workmanship, including leakage, breakage, improper assembly, or failure to perform as required;
provided manufacturer's instructions for handling, installing, protecting and maintaining units that have been adhered to during warranty period. Replacement is limited to component replacement only and does not include labor for removal and reinstallation.

1. Warranty Period: five (5) years from Date of Substantial Completion.
PART 2 - PRODUCTS
2.1 ACCEPTABLE MANUFACTURERS
A. Manufacturer: Subject to compliance with requirements, provide products of one (1) of the following:
1. Basis of design:
a. Mc Quay Inc.; Air Conditioning Div.
2. Optional:
a. Carrier Air Conditioning
b. Trane (The) Co.
c. York Div., Borg-Warner Corp.
2.2 AIR HANDLING UNITS
A. General: Factory-assembled and tested packaged multi-zone unit as indicated, consisting of components, capacities and electrical characteristics as scheduled.
1. Ship unit in the number of sections necessary to meet project requirements.
a. Transportation of unit sections into existing constricted mechanical room.
b. 4 foot – 10 inch by 6 foot – 6 inch high door then 4 foot – 7 inch by 6 foot – 6 inch high around existing equipment.
2. Split in maximum size pieces to allow for economical shipment to jobsite. Coordinate with installation conditions on site.
3. Unit split modules:
a. Provide necessary hardware to reassemble unit such as screws, bolts, nuts, washers, sealants and slip cleats.
b. Mark each corresponding module of cabinet with matching letters to assist in reassembly.
B. Casings: Heavy gauge channel posts and panels secured with mechanical fasteners designed to withstand specific operating pressures. Panels and access doors easily and quickly removable for inspection and access to internal parts.
1. Reinforced points of support for either setting or hanging units.
2. Drain pan, located under cooling coil section, extensive enough to catch condensate leaving coil at highest catalogued face velocity. At least one (1) drain connection at low point in drain pan.
3. Cover casing and frame with protective finish on both sides.

4. Outer panel, floor plate and inner liner G90 galvanized steel.
5. Module assembly, perimeter overlapping splice joints sealed with gaskets.
6. Access doors, with stainless steel piano hinges.
7. Base rail 6 inch formed G60 galvanized steel.
8. Panels and access doors two inch thick, thermal broke injected with foam insulation R-valve R-
13 or greater.
C. Coils: Provide of scheduled capacity, mounted in unit in manner permitting removal and cleaning.
Enclose headers and return bends within casing. Factory sealed connections with grommets on interior and exterior of casing.
1. Headers seamless copper.
2. Fins minimum thickness 0.0075 inch aluminum plate. Tubes expanded into fins.
3. Tubes 5/8 inch seamless copper 0.020 inch thick brazed u-bends.
4. Connections carbon steel NPT treaded.
5. Casing formed galvanized steel channel frame.
D. Coil Sections: Provide common or individual casing for heating and cooling coils. Internal structure of coil section to allow for removal of coils and suitable baffles to assure no air bypass around coils.
E. Hinged access panels for the following areas of each air handling unit:
1. Fan section
2. Coils
3. Air filters
F. Filter Boxes: Filter boxes with either hinged access doors or quickly removable panels, at each end.
Provide racks to receive filters in either flat or angle type pattern.
G. Zoning Damper Sections: Zoning dampers and sections in a series of equal-sized discharge openings, each with set of dampers.
1. Permanently secure damper blades in correct position on single shaft, rotating in sintered bronze or nylon bearings and extend either upward or downward for connection to damper motor.
2. Sealing edges on damper blades, or close against sealing stops.
3. Damper section capable of eight (8) horizontal or vertical air discharge, factory-installed for orientation indicated.
H. Fan: Double width double inlet, class II, belt drive, housed airfoil.
1. Dynamically balanced assembly by manufacturer.

2. Copper lubrication lines. Extend from bearings to near access door, termination with grease fitting.
3. Fan and motor mounted on steel slide base.
4. Access door to motor, drive and bearings.
5. Bearings, L-50, 200,000 hour, heavy duty pillow block lubricated ball or spherical type.
6. Shafts solid ground and polished keyed.
7. Belt drive cast iron or steel sheaves, keyed. Minimum two belts matched.
8. Motor, open drip proof premium efficiency 1750 rpm.
I. Controls:
1. Overload protection for each motor.
J. Airflow Measuring Station:
1. Multiple element pitot-tube type differential pressure output signal element. Complete with
Type 316 stainless steel sensors, single port “high side” connector and multi-port “low-side” connectors in 16 gauge galvanized sheet metal casing. Plastic tubing and barbed fitting to single point connections.
2. Shipped with a standalone differential pressure transducer 24 VAC/VDC input, 4 to 20 mA output, auto zeroing, digital display for remote mounting.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.1 EXAMINATION
A. Examine areas and conditions under which air handlers and accessories are to be installed. Do not proceed with work until unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected in a manner acceptable to
Installer.
3.2 INSTALLATION OF AIR HANDLING UNITS
A. General: Install air handling unit, where indicated, in accordance with equipment manufacturer's published installation instructions and with recognized industry practices, to ensure that units comply with requirements and serve intended purposes.
1. Unit modules may require additional disassembly and reassembly. Manufacturer to provide training to contractor for proper disassembly and reassembly.
2. Sealing and fastening hardware shall be supplied by unit manufacturer.
3. Provide travel expenses for one field trip for manufacturer’s service engineer to instruct
Contractor on proper assemble of modules.
B. Coordination: Coordinate with other work, including ductwork, floor construction, and piping as necessary to interface installation with other work.

C. Access: Provide access space around air handling units and packaged units for service as indicated, not less than that recommended by manufacturer.
D. Support: Install floor-mounted air handling units and packaged units on 4-inch high reinforced concrete pad, 4-inches larger on each side than unit base. Provide adequate mounting height to accommodate condensate drain with proper trap seal height.
E. Mounting: Mount air handling unit on vibration isolators, in accordance with manufacturer's instruction.
F. Electrical Wiring: Install electrical devices furnished by manufacturer but not specified to be factory-mounted. Furnish copy of manufacturer's wiring diagram submittal to Electrical Installer.
1. Verify that electrical wiring installation is in accordance with manufacturer's submittal and installation requirements of electrical specifications. Do not proceed with equipment start-up until wiring installation is acceptable to equipment installer.
G. Piping Connections: Provide piping, valves, accessories, gages, supports, and flexible connectors as indicated.
H. Duct Connections: Provide ductwork, accessories, and flexible connections as indicated.
I. Grounding: Provide positive equipment ground for air handling unit components.
3.3 CLEANING
A. After completing installation, inspect exposed finish. Remove burrs, dirt, and construction debris, and repair damaged finishes including chips, scratches and abrasions.
B. Clean fan interiors to remove foreign material and construction dirt and dust. Vacuum clean fan wheels, cabinets and coils entering air face.
3.4 COMMISSIONING
A. Manufacturer's Field Inspection: Engage a factory-authorized service representative to perform the following:
1. Inspect field assembly of components and installation of central-station air-handling units including piping, ductwork and electrical connections.
2. Prepare a written report on findings and recommended corrective actions.
B. Final Checks before Startup: Perform the following before startup:
1. Verify that shipping, blocking and bracing are removed.
2. Verify that unit is secure on mountings and supporting devices and connections for piping, ductwork, and electrical are complete. Verify that proper thermal overload protection is installed in motors, starters and disconnects.
3. Perform cleaning and adjusting specified in this Section.
4. Disconnect fan drive from motor, verify proper motor rotation direction, and verify free fan wheel rotation and smooth bearings operations. Reconnect fan drive system, align belts and install belt guards.

5. Lubricate bearings, pulleys, belts and other moving parts with factory-recommended lubricants.
6. Set zone dampers to fully open position for each zone.
7. Set face-and-bypass dampers to full face flow.
8. Set outside-air and return-air mixing dampers to minimum outside-air setting.
9. Comb coil fins for parallel orientation.
10. Install clean filters.
11. Verify that manual and automatic volume control and fire and smoke dampers in connected ductwork systems are in fully open position.
C. Starting procedures for central-station air-handling units include the following:
1. Energize motor; verify proper operation of motor, drive system and fan wheel. Adjust fan to indicated RPM.
a. Replace fan and motor pulleys as required to achieve design conditions.
2. Measure and record motor electrical values for voltage and amperage.
3. Manually operate dampers from fully closed to fully open position and record fan performance.
3.5 DEMONSTRATION
A. Engage the services of a factory-authorized service representative to train Owner's maintenance personnel on procedures and schedules related to startup and shutdown, troubleshooting, servicing and preventive maintenance.
1. Review data in the operation and maintenance manuals.
2. Schedule training with Owner, through Architect, with at least seven (7) days' advance notice.
3.6 EXTRA STOCK
A. Provide one (1) complete extra set of filters for each air handling unit and packaged unit. Install new filters at completion of air handling system work, and prior to testing, adjusting and balancing work.
Obtain receipt from Owner that new filters have been installed.
B. Provide one (1) spare set of belts for each belt-driven air handling unit and packaged unit. Obtain receipt from Owner that belts have been received.
