Building Description:
Building 47 is a two-story dwelling with a full basement. It is currently unoccupied, but was formerly a residence. The front of the residence faces south and has a concrete porch extending along the entire south side with four large columns. The dwelling is wood frame construction. The exterior of the residence is covered in wood siding, with a brick foundation. Doors and windows are constructed of wood, with additional metal storm windows enclosing most of the original windows. The interior of the basement is constructed of brick walls with a concrete floor. There is no insulated pipe insulation in the basement. The wooden sub-flooring and floor joists are exposed except in the laundry room, which has a plaster ceiling. There is also plaster on the stairwell leading to the first floor. The heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) unit and ductwork are located in the basement.
The first and second floors are constructed of plaster ceilings and walls. The plaster ceiling in the kitchen is covered with a suspended ceiling of fibrous tiles. The floors are hardwoods covered with carpeting, except in the kitchen / breakfast area, and bathrooms.
The floors in the kitchen and breakfast room are covered in vinyl sheet flooring. The first floor bathroom has a layer of vinyl sheet flooring underneath carpeting. The second floor bathroom is finished with ceramic tile, but there is exposed vinyl tile in the bathroom closet, which may extend underneath the ceramic tile. The attic is entirely constructed of wood, with no insulation.
Sampling Strategy:
The building was surveyed for materials suspected of containing asbestos. Samples of suspect surfacing and miscellaneous materials were observed. No suspect thermal system insulation was identified. Roofing materials were excluded from the survey, as per the scope of work.
Eleven (11) samples of building materials were collected for asbestos analysis:
♦ One sample of ceiling tile was collected from the kitchen / breakfast area.
♦ Three samples of plaster were collected, one from the basement, one from the first floor ceiling, and one from the first floor wall.
♦ Three samples of flooring were collected. One sample was taken from the double-layered flooring in the kitchen / breakfast room. A second sample was collected from the first floor bathroom and the third sample was taken in the second floor bathroom closet.
♦ Two samples of baseboard mastic were collected, one from the kitchen and one from the second floor bathroom closet.
♦ Two samples of exterior window glazing were collected, one each from the north and west sides of the home.

Discussion of Results:
Asbestos containing material (ACM) was identified in flooring materials located in the first floor bathroom and the second floor bathroom.
The first floor bathroom is a small area located underneath the stairwell to the second floor. The vinyl sheet flooring is hardwood floors and is covered with a layer of carpeting. There is approximately 20 square feet of ACM.
The second floor bathroom is ceramic tile. The small closet in the bathroom has approximately 4 square feet of vinyl sheet flooring, which was determined to be ACM. It is not known whether the vinyl tile extends underneath the ceramic tile, but if that is the case, it would increase the amount of ACM in the second floor bathroom to approximately 25 square feet.
