Building Description:
Building 45 is a two-story dwelling with a full basement. It is currently unoccupied, but was formerly a residence. The front of the residence faces south and has a concrete porch extending along the entire south side with four large columns. The dwelling is wood frame construction. The exterior of the residence is covered in wood siding, with a brick foundation. Doors and windows are constructed of wood, with additional metal storm windows enclosing most of the original windows. The interior of the basement is constructed of brick walls with a concrete floor. The wooden sub-flooring and floor joists are exposed in every room except the laundry room, which is enclosed with a plaster ceiling. There is also plaster on the stairwell leading to the first floor. The heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) unit and ductwork are located in the basement. There is fiberglass batting covering some of the windows in the basement.
There is no insulated pipe insulation in the basement. There is carpeting on the stairs, which is nailed in place.
The first and second floors are constructed of plaster ceilings and walls. The plaster ceiling in the breakfast room is enclosed with fibrous, suspended tiles. The floors are hardwoods, covered with carpeting, except in the kitchen, breakfast room, and bathrooms. The floors in the kitchen, breakfast room, and first floor bathroom are covered in vinyl sheet flooring. The two bathrooms on the second floor are finished in ceramic tile. The attic is entirely constructed of wood, with no insulation. The brick chimney is in poor condition, as it is leaning to one side. It does not extend through the roof line.
Sampling Strategy:
The building was surveyed for materials suspected of containing asbestos. Samples of suspect surfacing and miscellaneous materials were observed. No suspect thermal system insulation was identified. Roofing materials were excluded from the survey, as per the scope of work.
Thirteen (13) samples of building materials were collected for asbestos analysis.
♦ Two samples of ceiling material were collected, one from the ceiling texture on the second floor, and one from the ceiling tiles on the first floor breakfast room.
♦ Three samples of plaster were collected, one from each floor of the residence.
♦ Four samples of vinyl flooring were collected, one from the kitchen, one from the breakfast room, one from the first floor bathroom, and one from the second floor bathroom closet.

♦ Two samples of window glazing were collected from the exterior of the residence, one sample from the north side of the residence and the other from the west side.
♦ One sample of green paint was collected from the interior brick walls of the basement.
♦ One sample of baseboard adhesive (mastic) was collected from vinyl baseboards in the kitchen. The remainder of baseboards in the dwelling was wood construction.
Discussion of Results:
Asbestos containing material (ACM) was identified in flooring materials located in the kitchen, breakfast room, and bathroom, all located on the first floor of the dwelling.
The kitchen floor contains three layers of flooring material: vinyl sheet flooring, vinyl sheet flooring, and vinyl tile. The two bottom layers are ACM, along with their adhesives. The top layer and accompanying adhesive are non-asbestos. The breakfast room is homogeneous with the kitchen except it has only two layers, those being the top and bottom layers as found in the kitchen. The bottom vinyl tile layer and its adhesive were identified as ACM. The amount of ACM in the kitchen and breakfast room is approximately 350 square feet.
The first floor bathroom contains a layer of vinyl sheet flooring over green vinyl tile, the same tile as identified in the kitchen and breakfast room. This bottom layer of green tile also proved to be ACM, totaling approximately 20 square feet.
