About this file
This document contains four Naval Sea Systems Command cathodic protection inspection guidelines forms for inactive vessels. The forms provide guidance on periodic inspections of anodes, hull potentials, power supply outputs, reference cells, ship bonding, and other aspects of cathodic protection systems. Inspections are to be conducted quarterly and any discrepancies recorded. The related solicitation seeks proposals for operation and maintenance of inactive vessels in Philadelphia and modernization work in Norfolk. Proposals are due by November 1, 2021 for award by the Department of the Navy.

Description Item Take and record hull potential readings every 50 feet and record. All readings fall within the range of 0.8 to 1.2 volt range.
Current readings to each anode have been checked and are normal? Record readings.
Are support cords for anodes taking strain off cable?
Reference cell has been checked against shop standard cell and is satisfactory.
Potentiometer-voltmeter has been checked against a standard Weston cell or a battery with a known voltage and is within specifications or adjustments have been made to bring within specs.
Have all other discrepancies been reported? If not report them here.

Description Item Check power supply ammeters and voltmeters against a suitable calibrated meter. Were results within specifications ?
Remove dust and debris from power supply enclosures. Is the general condition satisfactory ?
(Automatic hull potential control only) Check reference electrode on the unit against a standard cell. Is the error 0.05 volts or less compared to standard silver-silver chloride reference cell?
Clean all exposed terminal connection, ship bonds, rectifier connections, ground return connections by sandpapering. Have all listed connections been sandpapered and in good condition?
All ships in nest have CP installed.
Are there 2 bonding cables installed, one fwd and one aft between ships. (Ships over 400 foot long require a third bonding cable in the middle) Have all other discrepancies been reported? If not report them here.
