About this file
This is a technical specification document for concrete sidewalk construction. The specification outlines detailed requirements for concrete sidewalk design, materials, and finishing methods, with Class "B" concrete as the required material. The sidewalk shall incorporate multiple types of joints: expansion joints located where the sidewalk meets concrete driveways, curbs, or other adjacent structures with one-half inch bituminous joint filler extending the full depth; one-inch deep contraction joints placed at approximately 15-foot intervals or matching adjacent curb spacing; and one-quarter inch deep scored joints spaced at 6 feet or equal to sidewalk width. Maximum spacing between expansion joints is 60 feet.
The concrete finish shall be accomplished using a float, steel trowel, and fine brush broom in a transverse direction. Formed contraction joints must be finished with a tool having a one-quarter inch radius, while scored joints shall be one-quarter inch deep. The sidewalk width varies per plans with a maximum of 10.5 feet, and slope requirements range from one to two percent minimum to maximum. Concrete shall be finished by float, steel trowelled, and broomed with a fine brush in a transverse direction to achieve the specified surface quality and appearance.

CONCRETE SIDEWALK
NOTES:
1. EXPANSION JOINTS SHALL BE LOCATED WHERE SIDEWALK ABUTS CONCRETE DRIVEWAYS, CURB
OR OTHER ADJACENT STRUCTURES.
2. ONE-HALF INCH BITUMINOUS JOINT FILLER SHALL BE INSTALLED AT EXPANSION JOINT
LOCATIONS AND SHALL EXTEND THE FULL DEPTH OF THE CONCRETE.
3. 1" DEEP CONTRACTION JOINTS SHALL BE PLACED AT INTERVALS OF APPROXIMATELY 15'
[4572mm] OR AT A SPACING THAT MATCHES THE ADJACENT CURB.
4. FORMED CONTRACTION JOINTS SHALL BE FINISHED WITH A TOOL HAVING A 1/4" [6mm] RADIUS.
5. SCORED JOINTS SHALL BE 1/4" [6mm] DEEP AND PLACED AT THE SPACING INDICATED FOR
THE WIDTH OF SIDEWALK OR MATCH SCORED JOINTS OF ADJACENT CURB.
6. CONCRETE SHALL BE FINISHED BY MEANS OF A FLOAT, STEEL TROWELLED AND BROOMED WITH
A FINE BRUSH IN A TRANSVERSE DIRECTION.
7. 1/4" DEEP SCORED JOINTS (TYP) SPACED AT 6' [1829mm] OR EQUAL TO SIDEWALK WIDTH.
