About this file

This document summarizes a federal solicitation for construction services to renovate the second floor of Building 101 at the National Institute of Standards and Technology. The renovation includes converting the existing floor layout to a less restricted design with a mix of closed offices, conference rooms, open work areas, collaboration spaces, and exposed support spaces. The magnitude of construction is estimated between $1 million and $5 million. A mandatory site visit is scheduled for January 22, 2024 and questions for clarification are due by January 29, 2024. Offers must be submitted by February 27, 2024. Along with the solicitation, attachments include forms for past performance, key personnel, and the building's asbestos inventory as well as renovation plans, specifications, and hydraulic calculations.

Memo August 08, 2022

To: NIST

From: Nicholas Randolph – Jensen Hughes cc: Erik Anderson – Jensen Hughes, Mahesh Mittal – CFR Engineering

Subject: NIST BLDG 101, Floor 2 Hydraulic Calculations

Introduction

The second floor of Building 101 is currently being redesigned and the existing sprinkler system will be replaced.

Hydraulic calculations were performed to show that the existing fire pump and water supply are capable of supplying the new sprinkler system. The output report from the HASS software utilized for the calculation has been attached as well floor plans showing the layout of nodes used in the hydraulic calculation.

Codes for the Project

• NFPA 13, 2022 edition

Attachments

• HASS hydraulic calculation output report

• Floor plans with node layouts o Note: The second level plan was done in AutoCAD as part of this project. Nodes on the second level are indicated by hexagons. The remaining plans showing the pipe routing back to the pump came from the as-builts provided by NIST. Nodes on these plans are indicated by squares.

Hydraulic Calculations

In accordance with the scope of work and NFPA 13, NIST requires a hydraulic calculation to determine that the water supply can adequately supply the new system. As part of the initial design effort, the following calculation was done to show that the current water supply can support this new system design.
