About this file

This is ASTM Standard Specification A 702 – 89 (Reapproved 2006) for steel fence posts and assemblies manufactured from hot-wrought sections for field and line fencing applications. The specification establishes requirements for the design, materials, manufacture, inspection, and testing of steel fence posts and related components.

The specification covers posts available in T-section, channel, U-section, or Y-shaped configurations, furnished in standard lengths of 5 to 10 feet (1525 to 3050 mm) inclusive, either painted or galvanized. Line posts shall be fabricated from Steels A, B, or C as specified in Table 1, with nominal weight of 1.33 lb/ft prior to fabrication and post dimensions approximately 1¾ inches wide, 1⅜ inches deep, and ⅛ inch thick. Posts require anchor plates manufactured from carbon steel, nominally positioned 14, 16, or 18 inches from the bottom of the post to prevent displacement during driving. Wire fasteners must be formed from zinc-coated steel wire with minimum diameter of 0.120 inches, per Specification A 641/A 641M Class 1 coating. Uprights and braces consist of angles with nominal sizes 2½ by 2½ by ¼ inches (weighing approximately 4.10 lb/ft) or 2 by 2 by ⅛ inches (weighing approximately 3.19 lb/ft). Material furnished must conform to general requirements of ASTM Specification A 29/A 29M unless otherwise specified. Sampling and inspection requirements include testing one item from each lot for tensile strength or hardness, weight, and zinc coating; visual inspection examines dimensional accuracy and surface defects. Packaging specifies binding in bundles of 5 posts with master bundles containing up to 250 posts. For direct shipment to U.S. Government military agencies, preservation, packaging, and marking shall comply with MIL-STD-129 and MIL-STD-163; for civil agencies, FED-STD-123 applies.
