In the event of a power failure, the gate drive system shall disconnect automatically so the gate can be operated and locked manually. For a full description of the requirements and specifications, see Appendix G, Automated/Motorized Primary Pedestrian Fence
Vehicle Gate.
SECTION 4.DRAINGE GATE DESIGN STANDARDS
Drainage Gate (Type DG-1) consists of swing gates mounted on a fixed post. The drainage gate structure consists of vertical HSS 6x6x3/16 steel tubes (bollards), 11-gage solid steel plate (steel sheathing) at the top, and HSS 12x12x1/4 steel tube gate posts. Additional members include HSS 8x8x1/4 steel tube header placed over the drainage gate, HSS 7x7x3/16 slide rail sleeve, puck locks, and barrel hinges. While the primary pedestrian fence may be 18 feet or higher, the gate height is dependent on the watershed conditions and analysis of the drainage conveyance at the proposed gate location. For ease of construction and aesthetic appeal, a 6-foot high gate opening should be used for required clear drainage openings of 6 feet or less, and 11-foot high gate openings should be used for required clear drainage openings of 11 feet or less. The design engineer shall specify the number of drainage swing gates required for a given location. Each gate shall have a minimum of 8 feet of horizontal clear width. The gate bollards are not rotated and spacing is 5 inches of maximum clearance between any two bollards. The bollards above the steel tube header shall be rotated so as to be oriented on the diagonal relative to the fence alignment, with maximum 4-inch spacing. The 11-gage steel sheathing is 5 feet in height and is continuous across the top of the gate structure. The sheathing is attached to the rotated bollards using a
½-inch by 4-inch steel bar and a notched 4-inch by 4-inch by ¼-inch steel angle. To meet the anti-perch criteria, the bollards at the top of the gate structure and the gate posts shall be mitered at 45 degrees and a plate is tack welded on. Drainage gates shall typically be supported using 30-inch wide concrete trench foundations to depths that match the adjacent TI fence type unless Geotechnical conditions require additional foundation capacity. Latching is accomplished with concrete filled steel tube slide rails being slid through the slide rail sleeves. Each gate receives two slide rails and four puck lock assemblies, with all located on the U.S. side of the fence.
4.1 DRAINAGE GATE DESIGN CRITERIA
Gates shall adhere to all design criteria as established under the respective fence type into which the gate is being inserted. In addition, gates shall conform to the following:
Design of drainage gates shall utilize Drainage Gate Standard Details (Type DG-1).
Locking mechanisms shall be provided for gates when they are in both the completely closed and completely open positions.
Clear spacing between gate vertical members shall not exceed 5 inches.
SECTION 5.GATE DRAINAGE PROTECTION DESIGN STANDARDS
Any alteration to existing conditions requires consideration of drainage effects as they relate to the installation or improvement of primary pedestrian, secondary, tertiary fence gates (TI gates). TI gates shall be protected from erosion due to stormwater run-off and allow the conveyance of stormwater run-off design across the site. In addition, any TI gates constructed or improved within the Roosevelt
Reservation, or 60 feet north of the land border, as well as any TI fence constructed within the Rio
Grande and Colorado River floodplains, are required to comply with various border related treaties between the U.S. and Mexico. For general drainage design criteria that shall be used for sizing erosion protection and conveyance measures as well as USIBWC treaty requirements are discussed in Chapter
1, Road, Bridge & Signage Design Standards, Section 7.1, USIBWC Floodplain and Section 7.2, General Drainage.
