DESCRIPTION

SurCoPrimer- FRP & Corrosion Inhibitor is a two layer surface applied product system for use on concrete surfaces in preparation for the installation of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) reinforcing laminates.

SurCoPrimer – FRP Layer I (SCP I) migrates from concrete surface to reinforcing steel and inhibits corrosion.

SurCoPrimer – FRP Layer II (SCP II) reacts with the concrete cement to increase dynamic tensile yield strength.

Steel Reinforced Concrete/ Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP)

SPECIFICATION

SCP I corrosion inhibitor performance is measured by ASTM G109 and verified by ICRI Guide 510.2-2019 and

UFGS 09 97 23.17.

SCP II tensile yield strength increase is measured by ASTM C1538 and ASTM C7522.

BENEFITS

Combined application of SPC I and SPC II on concrete surfaces prior to the application of FRP increased durability and life of the laminate by eliminating rebar corrosion and concrete surface strength as causes of laminate delamination.

APPLICATION PROCEDURES

Apply SCP I first and allow to dry and migrate into the concrete surface. Recommend allowing 4 to 8 hours between applications of SCP I and II. Make light application of water after application of SCP II has dried to drive all ingredient into concrete cement.

DESCRIPTION

SurCoPrimer – FRP Layer I (SCP I) is a surface applied vapor phase migratory steel corrosion inhibitor for application on concrete members prior to application of SurCoPrimer – FRP Layer II (SCP II).

SPECIFICATION

Corrosion inhibitor performance is verified by comparative performance on corrosion active reinforced concrete using ASTM G 109 modified for surface application of inhibitor.

Average results in laboratory and measurements made on structures by a polarization resistance method method gave an 80% reduction in corrosion rate. The use of surface applied vapor phase migratory corrosion inhibitors are described in ICRI Guide 510.2-2019 section 5.4 and UFGS 09 97

23.17 “Corrosion Inhibitor Coating of Concrete Surfaces” section 2.2.1.

APPLICATION PROCEEDURE

Recommend making application of SCP I as first step in project to allow sufficient time for reaction and drying. Make one application by spray, or paint roller and brush at rate to fully wet the concrete surface. Depending on concrete porosity the resulting application rate can be between 100 200ft2/gallon. Allow to dry and then make oneapplication of water.

SCP II can be applied when the surface is completely dry.

PHYSICAL/CHEMICAL CHARACTERISTICS

Boiling point: 212F Specific gravity: 1.03 Flashpoint: > 212F pH: 8 – 8.5 Appearance and odor: amber liquid with chemical smell Shelf life: 24 months in an unsealed factory container Storage: protect from freezing

LIMITATIONS

Minimum ambient temperature and substrate temperature of 35F. Do not apply when temperature is expected to fall below freezing within twelve hours. SCP I will not penetrate sealers, coatings, paints, and membranes.

When used indoors caution should be taken to provide adequate ventilation and additional protective gear such as respirators should be worn by the applicators.

BENEFIT

Reduction in rebar corrosion rate can extend life of a structure by a factor of three times.

Steel Reinforced Concrete/ Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP)

WHERE TO USE

SurCoPrimer – FRP Layer I is designed as part of an underlayment for the installation of outer reinforcement (FRP) to recondition the concrete substrate, pacify and prevent corrosion of the embedded steel.

Appropriate for use on all reinforced concrete structures where FRP repairs are being conducted. Intended for use in combination with SURTREAT SurCoPrimer – FRP Layer II.

CAUTION AND SAFETY

Handling: SURTREAT SCP I is to be applied by professional contractors only. All applicators should wear OSHA and NIOSH recommended protective equipment. Do not use or dilute the product in closed areas without adequate ventilation. Immediately close the container after removal of the solution. Avoid contact with skin, eyes and clothing. Do not smoke, eat or drink during application. Wash thoroughly after handling. Keep out of reach of children. Do not inhale or ingest or modify the solution. Refer to SDS.

Clean Up: In case of spills or leaks, wear suitable protective equipment. Contain spill and collect with absorbent material or process and transfer to a suitable container, ventilate area. Avoid contact. Dispose of in accordance with current, applicable local, state and federal regulations.

FIRST AID

Inhalation: If breathing is difficult due to inhalation of vapor or mist, move person to fresh air and administer oxygen. If breathing has stopped give artificial respiration. Keep person warm, quiet, and get medical attention.

DESCRIPTION

SurCoPrimer–FRP Layer II (SCP II)is a surface applied concrete tensile strength builder. The average pull-off tensile yield strength is increased from 200 up to 400 psi as measured by ASTM C1538 “Standard Method For Tensile Yield Strength of Concrete Surfaces And Bond Strength or Tensile Strength of Concrete Repairs and Overlay Materials By Direct Tension Pull Off Method”

SPECIFICATION

ASTM D7522 “Standard Method for Pull-Off Strength for FRP Laminate Systems Bonded to Concrete Substrate” is used to verify that a FRP laminate bonded to concrete surface has a dynamic pull-off strength equal to or greater than 200psi. Application of SCP II to concrete surface prior to placing of FRP will guarantee that the pull-off strength from concrete surface will exceed 200psi.

APPLICATION PROCEEDURE

It is important that all product active ingredients penetrate into the concrete cement. Application rates can vary between 100 to 200ft2/gal depending on concrete cement porosity and strength. High porosity cement can take 100ft2/gallon and will be in the weakest initial condition. Make 2 applications to surface using spray, paint roller or brush depending on structure geometry. Make second application as soon as the first is free of liquid on surface.

BENEFIT

Total monolithic load resistance for a concrete member covered with FRP reinforcement can be increase by a factor of 2 when the FRP dynamic pull-off strength is increased from 200 to 400psi.
