About this file
This document contains questions and answers regarding items required for the regulatory dry docking of the Training Ship Freedom Star (TSFS) in 2023. The dry docking work includes removing and replacing valves, testing fuel and other tanks, removing bilge water, and inspecting the stern thruster casing vent. No hazardous waste removal is required except for approximately 600-800 gallons in the oily water holding tank. The bilges should be empty. No sea chest plugs need removal or replacement. Three water spools require removal and replacement for visual inspection. The FR 74 CL 1" stern thruster casing vent valve is a short pattern gate valve with a 4.25" face and 150# rating in bronze and bronze union. Valves 2" or less do not need to be replaced but should be hydro tested if ABS requires. The 16 tanks refer only to the 10 fuel tanks, not other systems. No fluids need disposal from the hydraulic system and there are no zinc anodes in the bow thruster tunnel except as shown in the 2020 Zinc Anode Map.

Text version
• Item 112: What is the estimated amount of hazardous waste for removal/disposal? There is no hazmat that we are aware of except for the 600-800 gallons in the Oily Water holding tank?
• Item 117: What is the estimated gallons for removal of bilge water required for cleaning? The bilges should be empty
• Item 204: What are the specs for the sea chest plugs so I can get a material quote, and what quantity of the plugs are required for removal/replacement? No plugs needed, they are in place.
• Item 205: See new Item 205 amendment and Valve List (attached) o How many waster spools need to be removed/replaced for visual inspection? Three o What type of valve is the FR 74 CL 1” stern thruster casing vent valve? Short Pattern
Gate, 4.25” Face, 150#, brz x brz union (see attached updated valve list) o Can you confirm that you want all 33 valves removed to the shop for hydro testing? I read that you want all 2” or less valves to be replaced, but do you want these valves removed and brought to the shop for hydro testing too? Or do you want the new valves hydro tested? Nothing being replaced needs hydro, new valves yes, if ABS requires.
o Are the sea valves navy or commercial, and are they tax or non tax? Commercial, tax-exempt
• Item 209: Can you confirm that you want us to air test, open/close and light/ventilate all 16 tanks? Only the 10 fuel tanks, not the Dirty Oil, Lube Oil, Gear Oil, Hydraulic Oil, Em. Gen DO, or Transducer Void.
• Item 213:
o What is the estimated amount of fluids required for disposal (#9) to be replaced with hydraulic oil? Zero, it is already empty o What is the quantity and type of zinc anodes required for replacement (#12)? There are no anodes in the bow thruster tunnel, just those in the 2020 Zinc Anode Map.
