About this file

This is a technical specification section (05 50 00 - Metal Fabrications) for the EHRM Infrastructure Upgrades project at the WRJ VA Medical Center in White River Junction, Vermont, published August 1, 2018 (Project Number 405-22-700).

The specification establishes requirements for fabrication and installation of structural steel items including security screens over existing windows, support structures for wall and ceiling-mounted equipment, frames, railings, gratings, guards, and various specialized components. Key fabrication requirements include use of materials conforming to ASTM standards (structural steel ASTM A36, stainless steel ASTM A240, aluminum ASTM B221, and others as specified). Security screens must be constructed from flattened expanded steel mesh (ASTM F1267) fabricated from 10-gauge carbon steel, installed with corrosion-resistant fasteners spaced at 8-inch maximum centers with minimum penetration depths of 3/4 inch into window frames or 1-1/2 inches into wall framing. Shop finishing requires surface preparation per SSPC-SP 6/NACE No. 3, application of rust-inhibitive primer, and white paint finish, with hot-dip galvanizing per ASTM A123 for exterior or exposed items. Installation requirements specify proper alignment, plumb and level positioning, field welding per AWS standards, and use of appropriate anchoring methods including expansion bolts, toggle bolts, and embedded strap anchors depending on substrate type. The specification references numerous ASTM, ASME, AWS, NAAMM, and Federal Specification standards for material properties, welding, finishes, and installation practices.
