About this file
This document contains specifications and questions regarding a walk-in cooler for a joint ambulatory care clinic renovation project. Key details include:
-
The walk-in cooler should be 9 feet tall with a standard 34" x 78" door. The target internal temperature is 2 degrees Celsius. While the basis-of-design manufacturer cannot achieve the full 2-8 degree Celsius range specified, they can provide a 2 degree setpoint.
-
Mobile racks will be provided by VA rather than integrated into the cooler design. An air/water hybrid system is preferred to maintain temperature as long as the 2 degree setpoint can be achieved with 42 degree F chilled water as the primary system and air cooling as backup.
-
The project involves renovating the primary joint ambulatory care clinic in Pensacola, Florida for the Department of Veterans Affairs Technology Acquisition Center in Austin. Additional specifications are required to properly size the refrigeration equipment, including product type, weight, incoming temperature, pull down time, and frequency of door openings and equipment use inside the cooler.

1. What is the desired height of the walk-in cooler?
9’ wall, standard height door (34” x 78”).
2. The specs call for 2-8 degrees C but the Basis-of-Design manufacturer for the walk-in cooler cannot provide that variance. Please advise.
Spoke to manufacturer and a 2 degrees C setpoint is possible. This is the target temperature.
3. The Basis-of-Design manufacturer for the walk-in cooler cannot provide a device for posive oil lubricaon and oil level indicaon as required by specs. Please advise.
Submit with lubricaons system Basis of Design manufacturer provides.
4. Is the Rack System in the walk-in cooler to be air-cooled, water-cooled, or an air & water hybrid? Specs define each type, but do not direct.
No racks requested. Mobile, VA provided racks is the design intent. Air/water hybrid preferred as long as manufacturer can meet 2 degrees C setpoint with 42F chilled water. Chilled water should be set up as primary with air cooled backup.
5. The Basis-of-Design manufacturer for the walk-in cooler does not have a master control panel for our monitoring alarm system. They can provide a wireless monitoring system that sends text/email alerts. They offer the Kitchen Brains 75LC system. Will this be acceptable, at least for the purpose of leveling all bids?
VersaTrak is used for freezers and refrigerator monitoring along Gulf Coast Healthcare System.
Cooler to be provided with BACnet IP capability.
6. The Basis-of-Design manufacturer for the Walk-In Cooler needs the following informaon in order to size and price the appropriate equipment. They need the below infiltraon/box load data filled out to verify the refrigeraon. Are there any addional refrigeraon components to consider this based on the type of product inside (rust proof coangs (extends lead me), etc)?
a. Product type Chemicals, laboratory reagents, and or drawn blood samples
b. Product weight Assume 75% of foot print is stored liquid (water weight) on rolling carts.
c. Product incoming temp Assume incoming temp of 75F
d. Product pull down me Unknown
e. Number of people Max 3
f. Number of door openings
g. Number of lis (forklis, pallet jacks, etc) Max 1 pallet jack
h. Any other equipment in the box that puts off heat No
