About this file

This is a product data sheet and specification document for Southwest Fireproofing Type 5 GP, a cementitious spray-applied fireproofing material manufactured by Carboline Company. The document provides technical specifications, physical properties, approval information, and application guidance for this fireproofing product.

Type 5 GP is a single-component powder fireproofing that is mixed with clean water prior to application. The material is noncombustible, asbestos-free, and mineral wool-free, with tested fire resistance ratings up to 4 hours. It is designed for interior application to structural columns, beams, joists, decks, walls, roofs, and precast concrete units, with a typical density of 15 pounds per cubic foot and compressive strength of 16.25 lbf/in². The product meets multiple UL design standards (over 100 available designs) and has been approved by the City of New York Department of Buildings under MEA reports for walls, beams, floors, ceilings, columns, and roof assemblies. Type 5 GP is shipped in 50-pound bags, has a shelf life of one year when stored indoors in a dry environment at temperatures between 32°F and 125°F, and requires no site additives. The document includes physical test data confirming noncombustibility, impact and deflection resistance, and acoustic properties. A supplementary document from Eason Construction LLC provides a fireproofing thickness schedule for the Truman VA Hospital Expansion in Columbia, Missouri, specifying Type 5 GP application thicknesses ranging from 0 to 3/4 inches for various structural components to achieve 1 to 2-hour fire ratings, with the requirement that steel components shall not be painted or primed prior to fireproofing application.

Selection & Specification Data Generic Type

Cementitious, noncombustible, inorganic fireproofing supplied as a single powder component that is mixed with clean, potable water prior to application.

Description A single package powder component mixed with clean, potable water before application.

Type 5GPTM is intended for application to interior structural columns, beams, joists, decks, walls, roofs, girders, floors and pre-cast concrete units. It is tested and certified for fire resistance ratings up to 4 hours.

Features Cementitious – Durable, remains in place during construction and beyond.

Noncombustible Excellent film build – On all surfaces including columns, beams and decks.

Applicator friendly – High film build, injection of Accelerator A-20 is optional.

Asbestos-free – complies with EPA and OSHA regulations.

Mineral Wool free – no airborne fibers.

Styrene free – no toxic decomposition gases.

Economical – Maintains project on budget.

Multiple UL Designs – Provides for design flexibility with over 100 UL designs.

Quality Manufactured – under strict Carboline quality standards.

UL inspection service, consistent quality in every bag.

Ready to use – No site additives required.

Finish Type 5GPTM is normally left as a sprayed finish.

Primers Type 5GPTM neither promotes nor prevents corrosion. Fireproofing should not be considered part of the corrosion protection system. Primers are not required or recommended. For contour applications where steel is primed, bond strength must meet minimum UL criteria. Please contact the Fireproofing Division for further information.

Topcoats Generally not required. In severely corrosive atmospheres, consult Carboline Technical Service for selection of coating most suitable for the operating environment.

Selection & Specification Data (cont.)

Thickness Required thickness depends on desired rating and assembly to be fireproofed. Refer to design details.

Limitations Type 5GPTM is not intended for permanent direct exposure to weather or excessive physical abuse beyond normal construction cycles. Not recommended for use as refractory cement or where operating temperatures exceed 200°F (93°C).

Contact your Carboline representative for alternate product recommendations.
