About this file
This is an Appendix G file containing site characterization report data, which appears to be a technical supplement to the main solicitation for the Craney Island Eastward Expansion (CIEE) Pre-Dredging Phase 1C project. As an appendix document, it likely contains detailed environmental and geological data about the site conditions but does not directly specify required products, services, or contractual terms.
The associated contract opportunity describes dredging work at the southeastern cell of CIEE to depths of -41 feet MLLW for the main dike footprint and -25 feet MLLW for access channels, with 2 feet of allowable overdepth. The work involves approximately 3 million cubic yards of material to be transported via ocean-going scows to the Norfolk Ocean Disposal Site (NODS), requiring EPA Section 103 concurrence. The contractor must coordinate with Port of Virginia maritime traffic and other dredging operations. The work is being contracted by the US Army Corps of Engineers Norfolk District.

Virginia Port Authority November 9, 2009 (Project No. 3582.006)
INTRODUCTION
This appendix includes data from vibracore sampling conducted by Alpine Ocean Seismic survey, Inc. and prepared for the US Army Corps of Engineers, Norfolk District. A total of 6 vibracore explorations were conducted within the potential sand resource area of Atlantic Ocean Channel from October 9th- 12th, 1995. Geotechnical exploration logs were obtained from Alpine Ocean Seismic Survey, Inc. report, “Subsurface Investigation by Vibracoring for Sandbridge Beach and Virginia Beach Erosion Control and Hurricane Protection Project,” dated October 27, 1995, and entered into Fugro’s geotechnical exploration database for use in GIS analyses and interpretation.
Explorations were conducted from the R/V Atlantic Twin, an Alpine owned vessel, with a model 271 B Alpine Pneumatic Vibracore sampler. The sampler was configured to collect 20-foot-long core samples, which penetrated and recovered sediments to El. -70.9 ft. Samples were recovered in single vibratory runs.
Vibracore penetration logs with core descriptions from the original 1995 report are presented in this appendix. A note at the bottom of the log indicates the standardized exploration identification number that has been applied to each exploration and which is used throughout this report. For our standardized exploration identifiers, we have retained the original exploration number (e.g. 3), but have altered the prefix to include the year of the exploration and the type of exploration (e.g. 87V-3), where “V” represents a vibracore exploration. A summary of the vibracore explorations is presented in Table C-1. Table C-1, along with charts and figures presented in this report use Fugro’s standardized nomenclature.

APPENDIX D
1990 VIBRACORES
INTRODUCTION
This appendix includes data from vibracore sampling conducted by Exmar under contract to the US Army Corps of Engineers, Norfolk District. Data that is utilized in this report and is presented herein was obtained from the geotechnical data report, “Subsurface Investigation by Vibracoring, Atlantic Ocean Channel, Thimble Shoal Channel, and Off Sandbridge,” September and October of 1989, and June and July of 1990. A total of 162 vibracore explorations were conducted within areas of Thimble Shoal Channel, Atlantic Ocean Channel, and Sandbridge. Although 76 vibracore explorations were sampled within the potential sand resource area of Atlantic Ocean Channel, geotechnical and laboratory data was only available for 74 of these locations and is presented in this report.
Detailed logs were generated for a subset of the vibracore explorations (V-1A through V- 41A) by the USACE for the Virginia Sand Inventory Program, and are presented in the same format in which Fugro had originally received them. A note has been placed at the bottom of the log, which indicates the standardized exploration identification number that has been applied to each exploration and is used throughout this report. The remaining 33 vibracore exploration logs (V-43A through V-76A) were generated from Fugro’s geotechnical database. These vibracore logs include soil descriptions that have been modified based on available laboratory test results. Where laboratory test data results were available, Fugro has updated the soil classifications based on the test results and in general accordance with ASTM D-2487. Results from laboratory test data are also presented on the logs, including sample test depth interval, fines percent, and median grain size (D50) value.
Grain size data provided in the original reports were also entered into the geotechnical database. The laboratory summary table and grain size curve plates presented in this appendix were generated from the geotechnical database. The laboratory summary table provides soil classifications in general accordance with ASTM D-2487 along with depth intervals of laboratory tested samples, moisture content, specific gravity, dry unit weight, and moist unit weight. Depth intervals of laboratory tested samples, percentage of fines, median grain size (D50) values, and soil classifications in general accordance with ASTM D-2487 are displayed on the grain size curve figures. If the percent fines and D50 values were not provided in the original report, Fugro interpreted them from available grain size data.
For clarity purposes the logs, laboratory summary table, and grain size curves presented in this appendix contain standardized exploration identifiers. We have retained the original exploration number (e.g. 7A), but have altered the prefix to include the year that the report was issued, and the type of exploration (e.g. 90V-7A), where “V” represents a vibracore exploration.
A summary of the vibracore explorations is presented in Table D-1. Table D-1, along with charts and figures presented in this report use Fugro’s standardized nomenclature.
