About this file
This file contains geotechnical exploration data from site investigations conducted in 2008 at the Atlantic Ocean Channel (AOC) site near Norfolk, Virginia, including cone penetration test (CPT) logs, vibracore sampling results, and laboratory test data. The appendix includes detailed logs from 21 mini-CPT soundings (mCPTs 08BC-1 to 08BC-21) and 5 vibracore explorations (08V-21 to 08V-25) performed by ConeTec Inc. and Alpine Ocean Seismic Survey Inc. respectively under contract to S&ME for the USACE.
The data includes tip resistance measurements, sleeve friction, friction ratio plots from the CPT soundings, soil descriptions and classifications from the vibracores, and laboratory test results including moisture content, Atterberg limits, and grain size analyses. The explorations focused on characterizing potential sand borrow areas within the channel, with mudline elevations generally between -50 and -60 feet MLLW. The data is presented through detailed logs, summary tables, and cross-sections showing the subsurface stratigraphy along the channel alignment. Several figures illustrate the fines content and median grain size distribution of the potential borrow materials.

Notes:
1) Isopach (thickness) mapping represents thickness of material above El. -63 ft (MLLW) and within the navigation channel.
2) Interpolation of PBU is based on geotechical and seismic data.
Seismic data were converted from time to depth using:
Vp = 5,000ft/sec.

Notes:
1) Bathymetry from 2007 multibeam survey conducted by USACE.
2) Stratigraphic contacts are approximate and are interpreted from CPT soundings, vibracores, and seismic reflection survey data. Conditions vary both along and perpendicular to the section line.
3) Vibracore and CPT sounding logs are projected onto the line of the cross sections.
Therefore, stratigraphic contacts may not exactly correspond to the indications (lithology, friction ratio, etc.) in the logs.
4) Reflectors were interpreted from 2007 seismic ref lection data collected by Ocean Surveys, Inc.
5) Refer to Figure 3-4 for key to symbology used on cross section.
6) The soil classifications for the mini-CPTs are based on the soil classification of Robertson and Campanella (1988).
7) Seismic reflectors were converted from time to depth using: Vp= 5,000 ft/sec.

4) Reflectors were interpreted from 2007 seismic reflection data collected by Ocean Surveys, Inc.
5) Refer to Figure 3-4 for key to symbology used on cross section.
6) The soil classifications for the mini-CPTs are based on the soi l classification of Robertson and Campanella (1988).
7) Seismic reflectors were converted from time to depth using: Vp= 5,000 ft/sec.

Notes:
1. Samples from vibracores used during laboratory testing were, in some cases, collected from discrete intervals. Therefore, at vibracore locations, data used to generate the contours do not fully characterize the entire vertical profile at the exploration location. Fine-grained layers may be present at vibracore locations.
2. Fines contents were interpolated between exploration locations. Fine-grained sediment may exist in areas between exploration locations.
APPENDIX A
2008 EXPLORATIONS
Virginia Port Authority November 9, 2009 (Project No. 3582.006)
INTRODUCTION
This appendix includes data from vibracore sampling conducted by Alpine Ocean Seismic Survey, Inc., and mini-CPT (mCPT) soundings conducted by ConeTec, Inc. under contract to S&ME. S&ME was contracted to the USACE. A total of 61 mCPT soundings and 25 vibracores were conducted within the potential sand resource areas of Cape Henry Channel and Atlantic Ocean Channel between October and December of 2008. Of those explorations, 21 mCPTs and 5 vibracore explorations were completed in the Atlantic Ocean Channel area.
This appendix only contains logs and data from explorations conducted at the Atlantic Ocean Channel site. A summary of the mini-CPT soundings is provided in Table A-1, while the vibracore explorations are summarized in Table A-2.
21 mCPT soundings (mCPTs 08BC-1 to 08BC-21) were completed using an electronic mini-cone CPT system with a 2 cm2 area and net area ratio of approximately 0.60. The mCPT recorded tip resistance, sleeve resistance, friction ratio, and depth. The mCPT did not record pore pressure data. ConeTec conducted the initial mCPT processing and provided those data to S&ME. S&ME prepared the mCPT logs included in this appendix. Fugro obtained the mCPT data from S&ME and performed additional analyses (e.g. estimated fines content, relative density, etc.) and incorporated the data into the project GIS database and geophysical interpretation software as described in this report.
Five vibracore explorations (vibracores 08V-21 to 08V-25) were conducted using a self contained model 271 B Alpine Pneumatic Vibracore unit with a 20-foot-long, core barrel. This data provides soil samples and continuous soil profiles of subsurface sediments which aids in characterizing stratigraphic variations.
Laboratory testing was performed by S&ME on the vibacore samples. Laboratory test results include moisture content, Atterberg limits, and gradation analysis. A test result summary table, grain size curves, and plasticity charts are included in this appendix. Note that the summary table also includes test results from the explorations conducted at the Cape Henry Channel site.
For clarity purposes, the exploration identification nomenclature from the original report has been standardized in this report. For our standardized exploration identifiers, we have retained the original exploration number (e.g. 9), but have altered the prefix to include the year of the exploration and the type of exploration (e.g. 08V-9), where “V” represents a vibracore exploration and “BC” represents a mCPT. The logs presented in this appendix contain the original exploration identification, while Table A-1 and A-2, along with charts and figures presented in this report use Fugro’s standardized nomenclature.

1 Exploration designation prefixes used in this report (e.g. charts) have been modified from designations used in the original reports.
2 Mudline elevation at time of exploration and displayed on original logs.
3 Mudline elevation at exploration location estimated from 2007 survey.
4 Note the large discrepancies in mudline elevation measurements. When using mudline elevations from the 2007 survey, lithologic transitions correlate better with adjacent explorations and seismic data. Based on this the preferred mudline elevations are from the 2007 survey. However, changes in mudline elevation between the 2007 and 2008 measurements are unknown and may introduce error into interpretations based on this dataset.
5 Adjacent means that exploration is within 200 feet of the navigation channel.
