Visual Design Approach
The intention for this exhibit production is to replicate the visual style of 1920- 30s architectural and engineering drawing sets. Meticulously detailed diagrams and notes form the basis of the typography and linework illustrated and animated in the exhibit. The intersecting surface replicates a drafting table and wall in a similar set up to where a Hoover Dam engineer would have worked.
This division of content is reflected in the visual approach. The table features the “drawn” animation effects appropriate for the surface. The wall is the main location for photos, posted notes, articles, and reference diagrams, all which are arranged as if on an actual office/studio wall.
Typography
The intent of listing the typefaces is not to be restrictive but to provide adequate references to execute the visual approach. The final production should include but is not limited to the following:
50' DIVERSION TUNNELS
Tunnel plug outlets
LONGITUDINAL SECTION
650' 150' - 170' Deep
Sand and gravel
COFFERDAM
THE STEADY HAND

Prop Integration
The two projection mapped surfaces will be closely coordinated with the props and set dressing elements in the exhibit. See Section 06 02 Replicated Environments for an overview of the Office Alcove. More specific props and elements are detailed independently in Section 06 07 Props and Set Dressing.
Letter Reference
Once the attract screen fades into the regular sequence, a note on Bureau of Reclamation letter head communicates the context of the projection, grounding visitors who might walk up to the production part-way through.
This letter is constantly visible during the sequences other than the attract.
It communicates to visitors how the projection represents the engineers and architects process in the planning of the Hoover Dam.
Composition
This mock up illustrates the integration of props and the allocation of content to consistent areas in the layout. This format in the mock up takes priority over the storyboard visualizations, which serve to illustrate content sections.
The visual design will continue to be developed during production.
Letter head placement, consistent throughout production on a physical but blank notebook surface, though items may get crossed off and pages might look more worn as the video plays through
Additional notes, illustrations, diagrams or other visuals appear as if written on the “working surface” that is created on the table
Two empty plans are secured onto the wall behind, and projection mapped with relevant details for the stage
A note on the wall provides more written context
More dyanmic work surface
Pinned up references

Work Surface [Images and Animation]
1. On the table surface, a map unfolds. It reveals the Colorado River before the Hoover Dam’s construction. Notes start to write themselves onto the map, with the text describing 2 different possible locations. River route is blue.
2. Zoom on Boulder Canyon. Annotations from surveyors pop up.
3. Zoom on Black Canyon. Annotations from surveyors pop up. A circle is s drawn around site, indicating the selection of Black Canyon as the final location!
Wall Plans/ Photos (2)

2. 2 photos of Boulder Canyon
3. 2 photos of Black Canyon
Notecard 1. [No text]
2. Boulder Canyon [animated checklist (1. Can the canyons support the reservoir? 2. Are the canyon walls strong enough? 3. etc.) of factors for dam selection; not all will be checked off]
3. Black Canyon [animated checklist of factors for dam selection; all will be checked off]

Chapter 2 What Kind of Dam Should We Build?
Memo to Engineers [On-screen Text] Bureau Engineers, We need you to dam the Colorado River:
1. find the best place for the dam BLACK CANYON
2. figure out which type of dam is best
3. figure out how the dam will work
4. plan construction
5. make it attractive (if you can)
Work Surface [Images and Animation]
1. Arch dam: Orthographic drawing of arch dam. Animated lines indicate directions of force. Dam is illustrated into the canyon walls on the vertical surface. Force arrows show structural weaknesses before the failure of each dam type is animated. Scribbles erase or cross out “arch dam.”
2. Gravity dam: Orthographic drawing of gravity dam.Animated lines indicate directions of force. Dam is illustrated into the canyon walls on the vertical surface. Force arrows show structural weaknesses before the failure of each dam type is animated. Scribbles erase or cross out gravity dam.
3. Arch-gravity dam: A new drawing is started, a combination of the previous two types, showing an arch-gravity dam. The sectional drawing appears on the table. Key strengths are called out with arrows and notes before the dam is illustrated into the canyon like the previous tests, but this time the dam withstands the water pressure from the reservoir.
