5. Clearing adjacent to cut or fill sections shall be to a minimum distance of 3 feet outside of slope lines.
B. Grubbing
1. Grubbing generally includes removal and disposal of wood or root matter including stumps, trunks, roots, or root systems greater than one inch in diameter or thickness.
2. Within the limits of clearing, the areas below the natural ground surface shall be grubbed to a depth up to 24 inches below the ground surface.

3. Septic tanks, drain fields, and connection lines and any other underground structures, debris or waste shall be removed if found on the Site. Objectionable material from the grubbing process shall be removed from the Site and wasted in approved safe locations.
C. Stripping
1. Stripping generally includes removal and disposal of unsuitable organic material and topsoil, grass and vegetation root zones, and other deleterious material remaining in after the clearing and grubbing is completed.
2. In areas where stripping is required, the depth of stripping in agricultural land is anticipated to be less than one foot.
3. Stripped material will be considered for spreading in specific isolated areas within the project limits. The CONTRACTOR shall propose spreading areas in the Earthwork Sequencing Plan submittal per Section 31 30 00, paragraph 1.3.B. Proposed spreading locations of stripped material shall allow for vehicle passage, maintain positive drainage, and shall not conflict with canal design requirements. Material placed in areas of vehicle passage will require moisture conditioning and rolling as necessary to create a firm drivable surface.
D. The removal of any trees, shrubs, fences, or other improvements outside of rights-of-way, if necessary for the CONTRACTOR's choice of means and methods, shall be approved by the CONTRACTING OFFICERS REPRESENTATIVE, arranged with the owner of the property, and shall be removed and replaced, as part of the WORK.
3.3 DISPOSAL OF CLEARED MATERIAL
A. Vegetative material from clearing and grubbing operations or that exists in excavated material shall be disposed of by removing from the work site in accordance with the General Conditions, or alternatively the material may be disposed of by "chipping and scattering" in locations acceptable to the CONTRACTING OFFICERS
REPRESENTATIVE.
B. Disposal of cleared material by burning will not be allowed.
