About this file
This document is an amendment to a solicitation for floor mounted hoists for the FKC Middle Reach Capacity Correction Project Phase 1. The solicitation is being conducted by the Department of the Interior Bureau of Reclamation. The amendment provides additional specifications for the hoists, including requirements for the hoist frame, drive train, gears, brakes, electrical components and motors. The hoists must be capable of withstanding outdoor conditions and have features for field adjustment after installation. Motors must be 240VAC, 3-phase, 60Hz and rated for continuous duty. Electrical enclosures and insulation must meet NEMA standards for outdoor non-protected use.

resistance due to fasteners or friction. Bearings shall have oil-tight seals which will preclude the entrance of foreign matter. Special covers or other devices shall be furnished to protect the bearings against entry of dust and rain.
e. Drive Train. Each hoist shall be of the worm-gear type or a combination worm and spur-gear type. The worms, worm gears, and spur gears shall have cut teeth or threads. The worm gear shall be self-locking and manual force shall be required at the handwheel to lower the gate.
f. Gears and Couplings. Gear blanks shall be of cast or forged steel. All gearing shall be furnished with hardened and shaved teeth and shall be manufactured in accordance with AGMA quality class of 8 (or greater) and minimum AGMA load classification of 2 (or greater). If worm gears are used, they and their supports shall be sufficiently rigid so that no undue movement or “weaving” is caused. All gears shall have positive lubrication. Couplings shall be provided with means for field adjustment and with suitable means for permanent attachment to torque shafts after field adjustment. All gear reducers shall have removable and watertight gear housings. Lubrication points on gear housings shall be conveniently accessible.
g. Hoist Frame. Complete base frames for the hoist equipment along with the support structure and anchor bolts shall be furnished. The frames shall be of welded construction, bolted to the top of support structure or beams. Frame, bolts and all fabricated steel shall be hot dip galvanized. The hoist and hoist frame shall be a single unit with handling lugs at appropriate locations, for removal by a mobile crane in case the gate needs to be removed for major repair. Hoist platforms, as required, shall have suitable gratings designed for a minimum of 150 psf load. The complete design of the grating, any hand-railing or vertical ladder, stairs, and support structure shall be the responsibility of the CONTRACTOR. The grating shall be of galvanized serrated welded steel bar grating with 1-inch by 3/1-inch main bearing bar.
Stair treads shall also have 1-inch by 3/16-inch bearing bar with 1-3/16 inch over-the-center distance and abrasive nosing. All subassemblies installed on the frames such as bearing pedestals and brakes shall be fixed by shear lugs, fitted bolts or dowels during shop assembly. All fabrication work shall be in accordance with Section 05 12 00 – Structural Steel Framing and Section 05 50 00 – Miscellaneous Metalwork (Metal Fabrications) as applicable.
h. Axles, Shafts, and Couplings. Shafts shall be machined to close tolerances at bearing and gearing fits. Shafting shall be of rolled or forged steel and amply supported to prevent excessive deflection. Angular deflection in shafts shall not exceed 0.01 degrees per foot of shaft length at full load motor torque.
The maximum spacing between shaft bearings shall be in accordance with CMAA Specification No. 70. Suitable flexible couplings shall be provided throughout the hoist drive for connecting shafts and eliminate misalignment and axial thrust.
i. Brakes. The hoist shall be provided with two spring-set, 240-VAC electrical release shoe type brakes, each with a rated capacity of not less than 150 percent of the rated full load torque of the hoist motor. Brakes shall be arranged to set when the motor power supply is cut off or fails, and to release

when the hoist motor is operated. The release device shall be thrust or torque motor operated. A manual release shall be provided to permit manual lowering of the gate. A brake enclosure shall be of weatherproof construction, with the upper half of the case removable for convenient access to the enclosed mechanism. Means shall be provided for varying the holding torque and adjusting the position of the shoes to compensate for wear. Brake drum wearing surfaces and linkage bearings shall be corrosion-resistant.
Insulation of electrical coils shall be moisture proof.
j. Provisions for Adjustment of Alignment of Hoist Components. All items which are mounted separately on the hoist base frame, including drums, reduction gearing, brakes and motor shall be designed to permit field-adjustment of alignment after the base is bolted to the mounting surface.
B. Hoist Electrical Features
1. General. All electrical equipment including motors, motor starters, switches, cable and wiring, terminals, and other similar items shall be as specified in this Section.
All exposed electrical equipment shall be suitable for outdoor service.
2. Voltage Ratings. Line Voltage shall be assumed to be 240Vac, 3-phase, 60 Hz, grounded. Control equipment shall be designed for operation at 120 Vac, single-phase 60 Hz, grounded, with an operating range of ±10%. 120Vac and DC voltages shall be supplied as needed from control transformers supplied by the CONTRACTOR to be installed in the existing Gate Control Panels.
3. Gear Motors.
a. Voltage: 240 VAC, 3-phase, 60 Hz
b. Type: AC squirrel-cage-induction motors Heavy Duty.
c. Design: Conform to the requirements of NEMA MG-1, Motors and Generators.
d. Insulation: NEMA Class H.
e. Thermal Rating:
1) Hoist: Continuous
f. Enclosure: Totally enclosed non ventilated (TENV), rated for non-protected outdoor service.
g. The output shaft of the gear motor reduction unit shall deliver continuously the required horsepower, without exceeding the nameplate rating and without benefit of a service factor. The gear reduction unit shall be totally enclosed and shall have a rating for Class 2 service or heavier, based on current American Gear Manufacturers Association Standard No. 460, for Gearmotors Using Spur, Helical, Herringbone, and Spiral Bevel Gears. The motor and gear reduction unit shall be suitable for horizontal mounting, and for outdoor
