About this file
This Excel file is a detailed capability standards document for Grounds Maintenance Services at Fort Hood, Texas, outlining maintenance requirements across multiple facility and grounds categories. The document provides a comprehensive breakdown of maintenance tasks categorized into three primary capabilities for horizontal and vertical facility maintenance, including priority levels for different service areas such as plumbing, electrical, HVAC, carpentry, and electronic equipment repair shops. The third section specifically addresses grounds maintenance standards, defining maintenance protocols for improved, semi-improved, and airfield grounds, with precise specifications for grass cutting intervals, vegetation types, and height requirements across different ground classifications like high-visibility areas, common areas, and airfields.
The maintenance standards are stratified into three priority levels (Priority 1, 2, and 3) for different maintenance shops, with both Direct Maintenance Operation (DMO) and Preventative Maintenance Operation (PMO) categories. Grass cutting performance standards are meticulously detailed, specifying mower heights, acceptable grass types, maximum grass heights, and maintenance intervals for various ground types, including main gate areas, parade fields, drill fields, schools, playgrounds, cemeteries, athletic areas, and airfields. The document provides a structured approach to grounds maintenance that ensures consistent service quality and appearance across different installation areas.

| Grounds Defined: Grounds consist of all land and water acreage for which an installation commander has responsibility (including outlying and satellite areas). Grounds are grouped into the following Categories: | |
| Installation Cantonment Area(s): Are defined as the geographic area(s) comprising the most urban areas of the installation. The areas are characterized by concentrations of pedestrians and permanent assets (facilities) for non-field training purposes. The cantonment area includes, but is not limited to, family and unaccompanied housing areas, schools, medical facilities, office facilities, an airfield, industrial facilities, limited recreational places and community activities. Cantonment Area(s) may include the main access roads with the road shoulders (10 feet from the edge of the roads) from the primary controlled security entrance posts to the installation. Grounds classified as Improved, Semi-improved, and Unimproved ground may be included in the cantonment area dependent on location and usage. | |
| Improved Grounds: This category includes acreage on which intensive landscape maintenance activities must be planned and performed annually as fixed requirements. Maintenance activities include mowing, irrigation, fertilization, cultivation, aeration, seeding, sodding, spraying, pruning and trimming; weed, dust, and erosion control; drainage; and planting for landscape effect, wind, and sound abatement, and other intensive practices. Examples are areas within the built-up section of an installation which contain lawns and landscape plants; parade grounds; drill fields; non-synthetic turf athletic field facilities; cemeteries; and similar areas. | |
| Semi-improved Grounds: This category includes areas on which periodic recurring maintenance is performed but to a lesser degree than on improved grounds. Maintenance activities include mowing primarily for safety and security, weed and brush control, erosion control, dust control, and drainage maintenance. Examples are small arms ranges, antenna facilities, picnic areas, mowed road shoulders, ammunition storage areas, airfield shoulders and clear zones, drop zones, firebreaks, and similar areas. |
