34. Question: I would like to confirm the requirement shown on drawing E-601, related to the electrical feeders for the fire pumps.

The note indicates we are to run (5) sets of 600 MCM cable to each fire pump. Is the accurate?

The NEC only requires the feeder to be rated at 125% of the full load rating of the motor. This would result in approximately a 500 amp service.

Answer – To comply with article 695.7A) and 695.6(A)(2)(D) provide 6 sets of 500 KCMIL MI cabling to maintain a voltage drop less than 15% as well as a fire-resistive cable system.

Secondly, the NEC also requires this feed to be run outside the building. Drawing E-102, note 12 shows these feeders being run within the building. This is a clear code violation.

Answer – NEC article 695.6(A)(2)(D) allows fire pump feeders to be routed inside the building when protected from fire for 2 hours using one of the following methods:

The cable or raceway is encased in a minimum 2” concrete.

The cable or raceway is a listed fire-resistive cable system.

The cable or raceway is a listed electrical circuit protective system.

Cabling will be changed to MI cable and will be (6) sets of 500 MCM cable to each fire pump.

The code requires maximum of 15% voltage drop at locked rotor. (6) sets of 500MCM cable are required to meet voltage drop requirements.

54. Question: The attached section of the sprinkler specifications state that the contractors is responsible for achieving the specified requirements of the bid documents. Our experience in Bldg 150 indicated there may be an issue with water supply into the building.

With this statement in the specs, would we be required to upgrade the water service into the building or possible providing a large water storage tank if the system as designed will not meet the design criteria ?

If the systems requires more gallons per minute then the city water supply can provide does this constitute "System Failure".

Bldg 150 Sprinkler spec .pdf

Please provide additional specific information on referenced water supply issues.

It is the responsibility of the contractor to design the system to the available water supply.

Changes in water supply are not the responsibility of the contractor to correct. In the design, a flow test was conducted and preliminary calculations were performed showing the water supply is capable. The contractor is required to perform their own flow test and their own calculations.

If the flow test between preliminary design and contractors design changes dramatically, the contactor shall submit an RFI so that the issue can be further investigated and a way forward can be determined.

55. Question: The PCA unit we intend to supply is a water cooled unit, not air cooled. Will a chilled water supply via existing water tower or alternate source be available to be piped to each unit? Requested water conditions are: minimum input water properties of 3C and 1.7 liters/s and

4.9 psi pressure drop to comply with existing design.

Answer – Per specification paragraph 230099-2.1.h, air cooled condensers are specified. There is no available cooling tower or water supply to support water cooled equipment, provide air cooled as specified.

Answer – Additional walkthrough is not possible.

67. Question: 26 24 13-2.2.2.1.a calls for a NEMA type 12 enclosure. These are not available in typical UL 891 type switchboards. Some of the breakers require venting for proper interruption. If an unvented switchboard is required (typically due to a dirty environment in the electrical room) a 10 inch front compartment similar to a typical outdoor non-walk in construction can be provided with gasketing.

However, this will not be UL NEMA 12, but will approximate that application. NEMA 12 enclosures are not part of most manufacturers' switchboard offering.

Answer – NEMA type 1 enclosure can be provided.

68. Question: General notes E-001 note 1 shows all electrical raceway to be in conduit. I cannot find in the 26000 specifications that Armored cable is allowed on this project. I would like to make sure that this is correct. It appears that there is opportunity to install Armored cable concealed in walls. Please let me know if this is an acceptable means and methods.

Answer – UFC 520-1 allows AC cable in the following locations as indicated in the table below. AC cable is not allowed to be concealed in the walls. AC Cable will be allowed in exposed location not subject to damage. “Subject to damage” is defined in the UFC as the following:

Exposed interior raceways installed less than 6 ft above finished floor elevation where personnel are operating mechanized equipment on a recurring basis. Mechanized equipment that might be operated on a recurring basis include vehicles, carts, forklifts, and pallet-handling units.

Exposed exterior raceways installed less than 8 ft above finished grade or 8 ft above floor elevation for raceways on elevated platforms, loading docks, or stairwells.

69. Question: Drawing AE011 note #1 references some existing drawings noted as "appendix" documents. Where are these drawings?

Answer – There is no appendix. AE011 Note #1 will be deleted.

70. Question: On AD100 where it calls for masonry block walls to be demolished to the top of the slab, what happens to this area after we demolish the wall? Does the wall continue below the slab and need to be patched or is the block laid directly on the slab on grade? Please clarify.

Answer - If the question is related to interior masonry partitions, the existing drawings indicate masonry is placed directly on top of the slab. For new openings in existing load bearing CMU, existing drawings show a concrete stem wall flush with the top of slab (to remain).

71. Question: As a follow up to the answer to question 52, we were planning on the trench being empty so the top of the trench wall can be cut down 6" as shown on S-301 detail D3. If the trench still has piping wrapped with asbestos insulation, there won't be enough room to mount a saw and cut this wall down with the piping in the way. Is the location of the piping with-in the trench known? How close to the top is it? Additionally, if the piping with asbestos is still in the trench, we will be walking on it and disturbing it as we work around it and try to remove the top 6" of concrete from this trench wall. Please clarify this scope of work.

Answer – Existing drawings indicate the top of the trench wall to be 4” below the top of slab.

Since the piping appears to be in the way of saw cutting, reduce the new slab thickness over the trench from 6” to 4”, so that trench wall will not be required to be cut. Compaction of the fill material is critical..

72. Question: On all of the plan views of the drawings and drawings A-432 and A431 specifically, the bathroom plans are oriented to a compass direction that has North as a 45deg angle to the left. These bathrooms are then keyed to a N, S, E and W orientation in the finish schedule. Please clarify which walls are the North walls. In other words, what is "Plan North", the top of the plan or the left side?

Answer – Plan North is top of plan.

73. Question: Are any new plumbing fixtures being installed in rooms 206 and 207? Does the shower floor drain exist? Does the shower receive a new epoxy shower?

Answer – No new fixtures. Existing plumbing and fixtures on second floor to remain.

81. Question: Per detail A3 on A741, how many type H signs are there?

Answer – Reference exterior elevation D1/A202 for location.

82. Question: Note #3 on the reflected ceiling plans states ".....All ceiling heights are 9'0" A.F.F. unless noted otherwise." There are no other ceiling heights indicated, which would imply that all ceilings are 9' A.F.F. However, when you look at the building sections on A-301 and A-302 it is clear there are varying ceiling heights. Unfortunately, not all rooms are sliced by a building section. How can we determine ceiling heights?

Answer – Only ceilings not conforming to that note are the gyp ceiling area in Admin 129, the transition between Corridor 136 and 137. All other ceilings shown are 9’ or open to structure.

83. Question: The overall reflected ceiling plan on A-151 and the enlarged plan on A-153 have Egress Office 148 getting an acoustical ceiling, but the finish schedule shows it to be painted and not acoustic.

Please clarify.

Answer – ACT-1 is correct. Drawings to be updated in amendment

84. Question: Rooms 154 and 155 show as non-acoustic on the reflected ceiling plans but as ACT-1 on the room finish schedule. Please clarify.

Answer – ACT-1 is correct, Drawings to be updated in Amendment.

86. Question: Drawing E-102 Note 12 shows fire pump routing conduit through the building AFF 13'.

Per NEC will this conduit need to be encased in concrete? Or routed outside underground? Can you please specify conduit type once confirmed?

Answer –NEC article 695.6(A)(2)(D) allows fire pump feeders to be routed inside the building when protected from fire for 2 hours using one of the following methods:

The cable or raceway is encased in a minimum 2” concrete.

The cable or raceway is a listed fire-resistive cable system.

The cable or raceway is a listed electrical circuit protective system.

Cabling will be changed to MI cable.

87. Question: Drawing E-601 note 2 shows 5 sets of 600 MCM feeding the fire pump controller from a tap off the secondary of the transformer. Can you make sure that this is the design intent? Suggestion would be to place Locked Rotor sized O.C.P.D outside the transformer and reduce the feeder sizes going to the controllers. Another suggestion would be to tap the line side of MSB to a fused disconnect at Locked rotor sizing decreasing the conduit and wire going to the controllers.

Answer – Locked rotor protection will be provided at the fire pump controller. The fire pump controller shall de-energize the fire pump in locked rotor before the second pump starts. This Protection reduces the overall load considered in the voltage drop calculation. Due to this the fire pump feeders shall be 3 sets of #300 MCM cable to each fire pump.
