Chapter 1 – General Information

1.1 Statement of Design Objectives

The Comprehensive Interior Design (CID) package for the Thule Dormitory in Greenland provides the specifications, selections and warranty information for the interior finishes and furniture of this facility. This package is being developed to meet the finish requirements for this project. Finishes and furniture have been selected with the chosen ‘Recycled Glass’ CID motif selected by Air Force Officials for this particular building.

A. Function: The relationship of all interior and exterior spaces has been developed to facilitate daily operations, enhance operational efficiencies, and provide customer satisfaction.

B. Cost Effectiveness: All finishes provided will reflect the best value in terms of aesthetic value and life-cycle costs. There will be consideration in appointing funds to appropriate locations. Areas that provide the most impact on the customer’s experience will be considered important locations.

C. Durability: Selection of quality materials will ensure that the facility will look fresh and clean for years to come.

D. Maintainability: Finishes will be selected to limit future maintenance requirements.

E. Design: The design objective of this facility is simple. People should feel comfortable and productive in their living and work environment.

F. Creativity: The project will rely on innovation and creativity in color and style. Providing the best value is the goal for the functions of this facility and the personnel who will use it.

G. Flexibility: Where finishes are more imbedded into the building design, such as porcelain tile, a more neutral color scheme is appropriate. Finishes that can be updated easily, such as paint, allow for more popular colors to be used. This allows for future renovations with little cost impact.

H. Timelessness: The interior image of this building should stand the test of time and minimize becoming outdated. Materials and finishes that relate to a more timeless standard or that may be easily updated with minimal cost will be incorporated.

I. Sustainability: Creating a healthy building for its users and for our planet will be at the forefront of the design.

Finishes and adhesives with low VOC’s will help maintain a healthy indoor environment. Natural or recycled/recyclable materials will be a part of the design where possible. Also, materials that do not need a lot of maintenance will aid in the sustainability effort.

Revolutionary Urethane Grout Technology

Grout has always been the Achilles’ heel of the tile industry. The architectural community has long been looking for a product that solves the three leading problems associated with grout: staining, cracking and discoloration. QuartzLock™ 2 Grout solves these problems by providing unmatched stain, chemical and crack resistance, while being guaranteed not to fade or discolor.

For years, architects have specified epoxy grout because it offers improved stain / chemical resistance and durability as compared to cement grouts. QuartzLock 2 Grout is a Urethane Grout and, by its nature, is more chemical / stain resistant than epoxy grout, with the added benefit of dramatically improved crack resistance (due to its inherent flexibility!), making it a perfect product for the high‐ performance applications that architects favor. Additionally, it is most green grout product available today. The following is a summary of the QuartzLock 2 Grout features and benefits that architects consider when specifying grout:

Features Benefits

Commercially Rated Approved for most commercial applications.

Self‐sealing Exceptional stain / chemical resistance.

No sealing required – EVER!

Semi‐flexible Urethane flexibility and extremely low shrinkage provides the highest level of crack resistance.

No pigments (colored quartz provides color)

Guaranteed not to fade or discolor.

40 colors (solid and speckled)

Tremendous design possibilities; by not having pigments, two or more grout colors can be used adjacently on same installation.

UV‐Stable Perfect for outdoor applications – won’t yellow or fade in the sun.

Comes ready‐to‐use / Easy clean‐up

Cost‐effective vs. epoxy and sealed cement grouts.

Non‐sagging Great for vertical applications.

Environmentally Friendly Low VOC, BPA‐free, no waste

Limited Warranty

StarQuartz warrants that QuartzLock 2 Grout will be free from manufacturing defects and will not break down or deteriorate under normal usage for a period of two (2) years when installed in accordance with StarQuartz’s written specifications and industry standard guidelines in commercial applications. See full warranty for further detail.

QuartzLock 2 meets or exceeds ANSI 118.3 Standard

Test Results Provided by the Tile Council of North America Laboratory

Description Typical Results

Service Strength Pass Vertical joint sag Pass Linear Shrinkage1 0.06% Stain Resistance2 Pass Compressive strength3 >3,500 psi Chemical Resistance Pass Water absorption <1%

1 Heat‐cured sample to compensate for air‐dry vs. catalytic product.

2 TCNA results compared to Laticrete’s published data show that QuartzLock 2 exceeds SpectraLock PRO™ for stain resistance.

3 Test results were performed in an actual grout joint.

Other Important Facts:

Dry Time: 24 hours light foot traffic, 72 hours heavy foot traffic, 7 days for wet areas, like showers

Joint Width: 1/16” or greater

Cost: Similar to epoxy grout

Availability: QuartzLock 2 Grout is available at better distributors throughout the U.S. and Canada

Why are we greener?

1. Most specified grouts require mixing, which causes the release of airborne particulate that many states are beginning to regulate because of the potential health risk. QuartzLock 2 Grout is pre‐mixed and ready to use, eliminating this health risk.

2. Epoxy grouts contains bisphenol‐A (BPA) that can produce severe allergies. Jobs can be slowed or not taken by good tile installers because epoxy is specified. QuartzLock2 Grout contains no BPA.

3. Most epoxy grouts produce VOC’s that many states regulate. QuartzLock 2 Grout utilizes a water‐based Urethane that produces nearly zero VOC’s.

4. QuartzLock 2 Grout wash water is more environmentally friendly because it does not contain epoxy, cement, or pigments.

5. Urethane Technology’s crack resistance and durability can lead to longer installation life cycles.

6. Because QuartzLock 2 Grout is re‐usable it produces no waste.

7. QuartzLock 2 Grout buckets are made of recyclable Class 2 HPDE.

SURFACE PREPARATION

WARNING! Removal of old paint by sanding, scraping or other means may generate dust or fumes that contain lead. Exposure to lead dust or fumes may cause brain damage or other ad-verse health effects, especially in chil-dren or pregnant women. Controlling exposure to lead or other hazardous substances requires the use of proper protective equipment, such as a properly fitted respirator (NIOSH approved) and proper containment and cleanup. For more information, call the National Lead Information Center at 1-800-424-LEAD (in US) or contact your local health au-thority.

Remove all surface contamination by washing with an appropriate cleaner, rinse thoroughly and allow to dry. Exist-ing peeled or checked paint should be scraped and sanded to a sound surface.

Glossy surfaces should be sanded dull.

Stains from water, smoke, ink, pencil, grease, etc. should be sealed with the appropriate primer/sealer.

Drywall Fill cracks and holes with patching paste/spackle and sand smooth. Joint compounds must be cured and sanded smooth. Remove all sanding dust.

Masonry, Concrete, Cement, Block All new surfaces must be cured accord-ing to the supplier’s recommendations— usually about 30 days. Remove all form release and curing agents. Rough sur-faces can be filled to provide a smooth surface. If painting cannot wait 30 days, allow the surface to cure 7 days and prime the surface with Loxon Concrete & Masonry Primer.

Formica Brand Laminate should be stored horizontally, with a caul board or other protective sheet placed on top to protect the material from possible damage. The material should be protected from moisture, and should never be stored in contact with the floor or an outside wall. Optimum conditions for storage are approximately 75°F (24°C), and 45% to 55% relative humidity.

PRECONDITIONING

Prior to fabrication, allow laminate sheet and substrate to acclimate for at least 48 hours at the same ambient conditions.

Optimum conditions are approximately 75°F (24°C), and relative humidity of 45% to 55%. Provisions should be made for the circulation of air around the materials.

SUBSTRATES

Formica Brand Laminate sheet should be bonded to an appropriate substrate, such as #45 density particleboard (ANSI

A208.1 - 1999), or Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF). Due to the potential for stress cracking, shrink-back, and surface telegraphing problems, the use of plywood is strongly discouraged and not recommended. The substrate should be sanded smooth, and should be clean, free of oil or grease, and uniform in thickness.

Formica Brand Laminate sheet (grade 10/HGS) can be bonded to metal substrates using contact adhesive (see recommendations below, under Adhesives).

FORMICA® LAMINATE BY FORMICA GROUP

TECHNICAL DATA (GENERAL PUPOSE GRADE 10 AND POST-FORMING GRADES 12 & 20)

Formica Brand Laminate is designed for interior use only. Do not adhere directly to plaster, drywall (gypsum board), or concrete.

Do not use in areas exposed to temperatures exceeding 275°F

(135°C) or for exterior applications. When using Grade 20, finished panel widths should not exceed 24" (610mm) maximum, unless the adhesive system is a rigid set adhesive like PVA

(wood glue). We do not recommend contact adhesive for Grade 20 panels wider than 24" (610mm).

Formica® Laminate by Formica Group 2

ADHESIVES

Contact, semi-rigid (PVAc), or rigid (urea, resorcinol) adhesives may be used. Follow the adhesive manufacturer’s recommenda-tions. Certain combinations of finish, substrate, and adhesive can cause telegraphing.

When bonding Formica Brand Laminate sheet (grade 10/ HGS) to metal substrates using contact adhesive, use Formica brand flammable solvent-based #155 or non-flammable solvent-based

#120M contact adhesives. Do not use water-based or SBR types of contact adhesive when bonding laminate sheets to metal substrates.

ASSEMBLY

Material, equipment, and workmanship should conform to the

Formica Corporation recommended standard practices, condi-tions, procedures, and recommendations as specified by ANSI/

NEMA LD3-2005, Architectural Woodwork Quality Standards and ANSI 161.2-1998 Standards.

Formica Brand Laminate sheets (grade 10, 12, and 20) can be sawed, drilled, routed, and fabricated using standard carbidetipped cutting tools.

Holes for screws or bolts should be drilled oversized.

Panel assemblies should be laminated with the appropriate backing sheet to minimize warpage. Formica backing sheets

(grade 91/BKV or 99/BKH) are recommended for less critical applications. Optimum balancing is obtained by bonding the same surface laminate on both sides of the assembly with the same adhesive. Always align sanding marks in the same direction.

All inside corners of cutouts must be radiused as large as possible, 1/8" (3.18mm) minimum, to avoid stress cracking. The edges and corners should be routed, sanded, or filed smooth and free of chips or nicks. Panels fabricated using metal substrates, which are more dimensionally stable than wood-based materials, should be installed in a framing system, which captures the perimeter of the panel yet allows for the normal dimensional movement of the laminate. This is to protect the panel edge and prevent edge lifting or separation from the substrate, which can occur under dry conditions.

Notes:

Since there are variations in all fired ceramic products, the tile and trim supplied for your particular installation may not match these samples. Final selection should be made from actual tiles and trim, and not from tile and trim samples or color reproductions. Manufactured in accordance with ANSI A137.1 standards.

Strong random shading enhances the natural beauty of this product. To achieve optimal results, tile should be selected from multiple cartons and shading arrangements planned prior to installations.

Use of a latex modified thin-set is recommended when installing porcelain tile.• Special care should be taken when grouting with dark pigmented colors. A grout release is recommended to prevent finely powered pigments from lodging in the pores of the tile surface.

Installation Requirement: For proper bonding, medium bed mortar should be utilized in installing tiles with a dimensional length size greater than 20 x 20, large rectangles or tiles with greater dimensional thickness than normal. Back buttering tiles of this nature in the installation process will also assure proper coverage for bonding.
