About this file
This document contains a technical overview of a custom turbine maintenance platform design and the related federal contract opportunity for the Fort Randall Major Unit Rehabilitation Project.
The technical overview specifies the components of the turbine maintenance platform design including custom made scaffold hooks tested to 2000 pounds with one tested to 4000 pounds without failure. A Crosby 7/16" shackle rated at 3000 pounds will connect the scaffold hook to Gunnebo 3/8" grade 100 chain with an 8800 pound rating. A custom ASTM A-307 grade A U-bolt will connect the chain to the turbine I-beam, calculated to have a working load limit of 1700 pounds.
The federal contract opportunity is issued by the Department of the Army Corps of Engineers Engineering District Omaha for the Fort Randall Major Unit Rehab project with a closing date of March 25, 2021. An updated site visit is scheduled for January 12-13, 2021 for contractors to inspect the dewatered unit, open penstock, installed maintenance platform, and exposed generator components. Contractors must register for site visits by December 22 and identify non-US citizens by December 17. The approved date will be provided by December 28.

Text version
Custom made scaffold hook. All hooks tested to 2000 pounds. One tested to 4000 pounds without yielding or failure.
Crosby 7/16” shackle will join the custom scaffold hook and chain. 3000 pound WLL.
Manufacturer Safety Factor is 6:1
Gunnebo 3/8” Grade 100 chain will join the shackle and custom U-bolt. 8800 pound WLL.
Manufacturer Safety Factor is 4:1
Custom made ASTM A-307 Gr A ½” U-bolt will join the chain and I-beam.
Below is the Fort Randall assembly which will be used to suspend the turbine maintenance platform. Supporting documentation follows.
**All 20 scaffold hooks were tested to 2000 lbs.
One tested to 4000 pounds without yielding or failure.
CUSTOM U-BOLT
*In this design case with only vertical (tensile) loads applied to the U-bolt, the first failure mode (worst case, weakest characteristic) of the U-bolt will be due to a shear force.
*Industrial Fastener Institute 7th ed. 2003 B-8 states a bolt’s shear strength is approximately 60% of the minimum tensile strength.
*Minimum Tensile Strength of a ½” A307 straight bolt = 60ksi*3.14*0.252 = 11,775 pounds *Shear strength of our U-bolt would be approximately 11,775*0.6 = 7065 pounds *Implementing a 4:1 safety factor = 7065/4 = 1766 pounds *A conservative WLL for our U-bolt would be: 1700 pounds
