PART 2 PRODUCTS
2.1 MATERIALS
2.1.1 Shooting Range Baffles
a. Baffles shall be for the purpose of containing misdirected rounds within a shooting range and shall comply with UFC requirements.
b. Baffles shall be capable of mounting from the ceiling at angles in order to provide an armored strike surface in every direction in which the shooter may point his gun. Structural supports for hanging baffles shall be provided by baffle manufacturer.
c. Baffle panels shall consist solely of a rectangular sheet of steel.
The fabrication of these panels shall not include any welded components or field cut-outs (holes, notches, grooves, etc.).
d. Rounds fired into the baffles shall not reflect splatter back toward
SECTION 10 71 15.00 Page 2 e4ecedgg Polygon the shooter. All lead fragments shall either be contained by the baffle or shall be expelled toward the bullet trap.
e. Baffles shall interconnect one to another in a modular fashion so that they may be taken apart again, replaced, or moved.
f. In addition to being stackable horizontally, rows of baffles may also be connected vertically to provide armoring of a larger total area than the standard 48 vertical inches. All standard baffle interconnection kits shall contain the means to stack in both the horizontal and vertical direction without the addition of further components. As with horizontal stacking, vertical stacking will also guarantee overlap in the joints to provide a resulting single, contiguous, bullet-proof surface.
2.1.1.1 Construction
a. All joints shall provide overlapping surfaces so there is no potential for small cracks where bullets or bullet fragments might escape.
b. All joints shall be capable of containing high power rifle rounds such as .762 and .308 caliber.
c. Construct overhead baffles with a minimum of 150 millimeters (6 inches) of horizontal overlap between the trailing edge of any baffle and the leading edge of the next baffle down range.
d. All joints shall be constructed such that no small gaps remain through which bullet fragments might escape the joint by deflecting a total of less than 180 degrees (two consecutive 90 degree impacts).
e. Joints shall be used to interconnect panels which cover a 48"x48" standard area. Panels shall be available in a variety of different grades for containment of the required rounds.
f. Baffle interconnection system shall provide a wooden facade system which includes a 10 mm (0.375 in.) steel plate with a nominal 500 BHN, covered with one sheet of 19 mm and one sheet of 11mm plywood. Plywood shall be fire resistant treated (FRT) plywood in accordance with International Building Code (IBC) section 803 class A flames spread 0-25 and smoke development 0-450.
g. No ballistic panel shall be subjected to flame cutting (oxygen fuel cutting, such as acetylene, propane or MAPP gas, etc.). All ballistic panel cutting must be done on computer-controlled plasma equipment.
h. Steel panels must be sandblasted and be in compliance with painting specification SP-6.
2.2 HEAVY-DUTY ABRASION-RESISTANT STEEL LOW SLOPE WET TYPE BULLET TRAP
a. Basis of Design Product: Action Target "Savage Range Systems 830 Snail Bullet Trap" or approved equal.
1. The trap shall be the wet "snail type" trap system as indicated in basis of design, shall meet all UFC requirements.
SECTION 10 71 15.00 Page 3
The trap shall be free of any toxic substances.
2. The primary enervation of the bullets shall be by means of friction and deformation against the primary impact plates. The plates shall enable a multiplicity of impacts on the primary impact plates before the particles enter the swirl chamber for final enervation.
b. Spatial Requirements:
1. The trap shall shelter and abut both side walls of the range from wall to wall and from the floor to the highest bullet path that can be expected. The trap system shall support the number of shooting positions and firing lane widths indicated in the drawings. The target window shall be the full width of the range uninterrupted by partitions or other visible structures. All dimensions shall be verified by the Contractor in the field prior to fabrication and installation.
c. Functional Requirements:
1. All bullet particles energized by the trap shall pass through the primary impact plated to the secondary enclosed, sealed and fully shielded swirl chamber and to the drag conveyor. The swirl chamber shall be configured and attached to the primary impact plates so they contain all properly directed and misdirected spent bullets so they do not exit the range other than by the drag conveyor. There shall be no chutes behind the trap that cannot be visually inspected for occlusions and jamming.
2. The trap shall include a system that can collect the bullet and bullet particles from the trap's deceleration chamber for periodic salvage.
They shall be recoverable from the lead collection area located within the range.
d. Metallurgical Requirements:
1. All surfaces of the bullet trap which may be directly impacted by incoming shots from the firing line, both properly directed and misdirected, shall be constructed of a high abrasion resistant steel alloy of carbon, magnesium, cobalt and molybdenum. No mild steel surfaces shall be exposed directly to incoming bullets.
2. The primary impact plates shall be abrasion resistant steel with 3/4" minimum thickness. For terminal ballistics, it shall be equivalent to minimum alloy AR 500 Steel with a minimum Brinnel hardness of 477.
3. The wall fairings and overtrap fairing shall be abrasion resistant AR-500 steel with inch thickness as recommended by the bullet trap manufacturer.
4. The angle of the steel impact plates of the traps shall be a maximum of 15 degrees to the horizontal plane.
2.2.1 Construction Requirements:
a. The target holder shall be bolted to deflector plates as indicated.
Sidewall and overtrap fairings shall be attached to walls or roof structure.
SECTION 10 71 15.00 Page 4 e4ecedgg Polygon
b. There shall be no bolts or other fasteners exposed to direct hits from properly directed or misdirected shots fired from the firing line. If battens or "T" bars are used to cover the joints between the plates, they shall be shaped, constructed, and installed so that they do not become deformed or pull away from the plate if struck by a bullet or bullet fragment. Bullet or bullet fragments that strike the intersection of the cover and the plate shall not collect at the joint between the cover and the plates. If a bullet or bullet fragment strikes the cover or joints formed by the cover, ricochet out of the trap shall not result. All materials striking the joint covers or joints formed by the covers shall be absorbed by the bullet trap, collected by the auger system, and be removed from the range at the point of collection.
c. Overtrap fairings shall be provided to redirect high shots into the trap proper. It shall extend from the top of the trap to the highest line that can be struck by misdirected bullets from the firing line.
d. Sidewall fairings shall be provided for both wall ends of the trap so that fire bullets sliding along the walls will be directed into the trap and so that back-splatter from the trap cannot return towards the firing line by sliding along side walls.
e. All surfaces of the trap shall be factory-primed and painted.
f. All hardware necessary for the joining of the trap members and the suspension of the overtrap fairing shall be furnished by the manufacturer, including the anchors to steel framing members.
g. The trap shall be divided into space corresponding to the shooting points so that the targets are approximately centered on their respective impact plates and the divisions between impact plates shall occur approximately midway between target centers. Coordinate size of sections so that none of the sections will exceed the size of the largest door opening at the range.
h. Impact plates shall be interchangeable and reversible.
