SECTION 31 20 40 Page 2
C. A manufacturer's Certificate of Compliance for the seed mixture shall be submitted by the manufacturer with each shipment of each type of seed.
These certificates shall include the guaranteed percentages of purity, weed content, and germination of the seed, net weight, and the date of shipment. No seed may be sown until the Contractor has submitted these certificates. The seed mix shall not include invasive species.
1.5 QUALITY ASSURANCE
A. Maintain erosion and sediment controls in accordance with these Specifications.
PART 2 PRODUCTS
2.1 FINAL GRADING
A. Contractor shall grade the site to prevent ponding, promote positive drainage, and taper to existing Limits of Work/Fence Lines unless shown otherwise on the drawings.
B. Topsoil shall be placed at 6 inches in thickness. If topsoil or organic matter is not added, the existing subsoil shall be tilled to a depth of at least 6 inches to increase water and root penetration of grass seed. Tilling to this depth shall be performed with a tractor-mounted trailer.
2.2 MATERIALS
A. Fertilizer
1. Fertilizer must contain a water soluble and water insoluble component.
2. Water insoluble fertilizer - Apply 32 pounds of actual water insoluble nitrogen per acre. The water insoluble nitrogen must be from urea-formaldehydes and/or course grade isobutylidene diurea.
3. Water soluble fertilizer - The rate of nitrogen must be 48 pounds of actual nutrient per acre and 40 pounds of actual potassium per acre.
Components of the fertilizer to include urea and potassium chloride.
4. Liquid fertilizer for hydro-seed: 29-0-4 (containing no chlorine and no phosphorus).
B. Seed all areas as approved by the COR that have been affected by construction activities.
1. Use seed mixture as defined in section 32 90 00 Planting, for use in upland areas to match the existing grass type on site. Apply at manufacturer's recommended rate.
C. Mulch
1. Wood slurry mulch (Hydro mulch) and tackifier shall be in accordance with section 32 90 00 Planting, sub part 2.2 A.
SECTION 31 20 40 Page 3
PART 3 EXECUTION
3.1 INSPECTION
A. The Contractor shall verify that the prepared topsoil layer is ready to receive the Work of this Section.
3.2 SURFACE RESTORATION
A. Unless otherwise specified, all disturbed areas shall be prepared as specified in Section 2.1.
B. All areas designated by the Government Representative shall be seeded.
3.3 FERTILIZING
A. The Contractor shall apply fertilizer in accordance with manufacturer's instructions.
B. The Contractor shall apply fertilizer after smoothing the topsoil layer.
C. The Contractor shall not apply fertilizer at the same time or with the same machine that will be used to apply seed, unless hydroseeding.
D. The Contractor shall mix fertilizer thoroughly into upper loose soils of the vegetative layer with a disc, spring-tooth harrow, or other suitable equipment.
E. The Contractor shall lightly water ground surface to aid in the dissipation of fertilizer.
3.4 SEEDING
A. The Contractor shall apply seeding as specified in PART 2 of this Section to establish permanent cover.
B. Planting season shall be as specified in Section 32 90 00 - Planting. No planting is recommended when snow is on the ground.
C. The Contractor shall not sow immediately following rain when ground is too dry, frozen, or during windy periods.
D. Hydroseeding - This method is best for steep inaccessible areas.
When applying seeds, lime, fertilizer, or mulch materials with hydroseeders do not use more than (150) pounds of solids per one hundred
(100) gallons of water. If inoculate is in a seed, fertilizer, and lime slurry it should be used within three (3) to four (4) hours, or a fresh supply of inoculate should be added. It is preferable to hydroseed when the soil is moist.
3.5 MULCHING
SECTION 31 20 40 Page 4
A. Wood slurry mulch (hydro mulch) shall be applied to seeded area at a rate of fifteen hundred (1,500) pounds per acre, shall be in accordance with Section 32 90 00 Part 2.2 A, and shall be applied in accordance with manufacturer recommendations.
3.6 RESEEDING
A. 90% vegetative coverage is required to be established at the close out of the project. However, final approval of the hydroseeded area will be done by the COR.
B. Where vegetative coverage is less than 90% by the time of the next seeding timeframe after initial seeding, the Contractor shall place additional seed to achieve the 90% vegetative coverage requirement.
C. All vegetative growth must be warrantied for one year past planting
3.7 PROTECTION
A. The Contractor shall erect barricades and warning signs as required to protect newly planted areas from traffic. Barricades shall be maintained throughout maintenance period until lawn is established.
3.8 MAINTENANCE
A. The Contractor shall perform maintenance of seeded areas after planting to ensure that adequate grass cover is established. This does not include continued maintenance, such as mowing, once adequate cover is established, but is to include any maintenance that is necessary to ensure that adequate grass coverage has been established. Maintenance includes but is not limited to, further filling of low spots or newly eroded areas, reseeding if necessary, watering, fertilizing, and controlling erosion.
3.9 ACCEPTANCE
A. When Work is substantially completed, including maintenance, the Government COR will, upon request, make an inspection to determine acceptability. Lawn Work may be inspected for acceptance in parts agreeable to Engineer, provided Work offered for inspection is com-plete, including maintenance.
B. The Contractor shall replant rejected work and continue specified maintenance until re-inspected by the COR and found to be acceptable.
C. Seeded lawns will be acceptable provided requirements, including maintenance, have been met and healthy uniform close sand of specified grass is established free of weeds, bare spots, and surface irregularities.
3.10 CLEANUP
A. The Contractor shall promptly remove soil and debris created by Work from paved areas. Clean wheels of vehicles before leaving site to avoid tracking soil onto surface of roads, walks, or other paved areas.
