1. Purpose. This technical bulletin (TB) lists the calibration and repair support (C&RS) requirements for test, measurement, and diagnostic equipment (TMDE) and calibration standards used in the support of equipment used by the Army. The inspection/calibration of small arms and ammunition gages (SAAG) is also contained in this bulletin. TMDE not listed in this publication will not be supported by U. S. Army TMDE support units until identified to the U. S. Army Test, Measurement, and Diagnostic Equipment Activity (USATA) in accordance with (IAW) the provisions of AR 750-43.
2. Scope. This TB is applicable to all U. S. Army units, organizations, installations, activities, and commands which are responsible for the maintenance of the Army equipment;
schools and training centers; and Army National Guard (ARNG) and U. S. Army Reserve (USAR) units.
3. Identification of Requirements for TMDE Not Listed in this TB. When an instrument not listed in TB 43-180 is identified as requiring C&RS a DA Form 3758-R will be generated and submitted to the USATA Enterprise Support Directorate. Once a DA Form 3758-R is submitted the instrument owner may either:
a. Wait for the DA Form 3758-R to be processed before adding the item to the IMRF.
TSAs may provide C&RS on the instrument once the DA Form 3758-R has been approved by the USATA Enterprise Support Directorate identifying a suitable technique, support level, support location, and calibration interval.
b. Request that the item be added to the IMRF immediately if it has a vendor calibration.
Once added to the IMRF, the instrument may be used with the vendor calibration until the DA Form 3758-R is fully processed, and the item is added to the TB 43-180. Items added to the IMRF prior to receiving DA Form 3758-R approval will receive default codes of “F” (support level), “Vendor” (calibration procedure), and the OEM recommended calibration interval. The DA Form 3758-R submission number should also be included in the IMRF remarks. The item will be updated to the TB 43-180 requirements at the next scheduled calibration.
4. General
a. This TB contains Section I which is an alphanumeric listing of all known Army TMDE (including SAAG) calibration and/or repair requirements and is sequenced by manufacturer's model, Joint Electronics Type Designator System (JETDS) (formerly JAN), nomenclature, Army part number (APN), specification, or range. Certain requirements, such as those listed under a military (MIL) specification, are listed as “ALL NSN.”
b. Changes to data elements as required for DA Form 7372 (TMDE Calibration and Repair Data) will be updated IAW TB 750-25 upon receipt, or on an individual basis as items become due for calibration. To prevent a conflict between established schedules and equipment records an item will normally be scheduled and calibrated based on the interval specified at the time of the last calibration. At the time of next calibration all records, including DA Label 80 (U. S. Army Calibrated Instrument) or DA Label 163 (U. S. Army Limited or Special Calibration), must be annotated to depict the interval specified in this TB.
Items changing from calibration not required (CNR) to a calibration status will be scheduled for calibration as soon as feasible after receipt of this TB. Refer to TB 750-25 for forms preparation and data reporting instructions.
NOTE
Calibration must be requested and performed anytime within the authorized interval when the user suspects that the TMDE is out-of-tolerance.
c. This TB will be used to identify TMDE requiring cyclic calibration and/or repair support by TMDE users.
d. The National Guard Combined Support Maintenance Shops (CSMS) and MTOE Area TMDE Support Teams (ATST) will be responsible for
(1) Supporting those items designated as (T) level support when the CSMS has been authorized the TMDE support capability in accordance with AR 750-43.
(2) TMDE support requirements and intervals for ARNG or USAR equipment used in a formal classroom environment will be determined IAW AR 750-43, paragraph 6-24.
(3) Individual ARNG or USAR TMDE items not currently in use may be placed in administrative storage, providing the readiness posture of the affected unit is not degraded.
e. TMDE located at the Army Primary Standards Laboratory (APSL), Research and Development (R&D), Procurement and Production (P&P), Test and Evaluation (T&E) installations, the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers, and depot maintenance activities will be listed in this TB. The owners of TMDE at these activities should notify USATA of new TMDE obtained, and USATA will recommend C&RS support requirements and intervals based on equipment applications IAW AR 750-43, paragraph 6-8.
f. Safety considerations
(1) Prior to making power connections, inspect all TMDE input power wiring and fuse receptacles IAW OSHA standard 1910.334 para (c)(2): “Test instrument/equipment and all associated test leads, cables, power cords, probes, and connectors shall be visually inspected for external defects and damage before the equipment is used. If there is a defect or evidence of damage that might expose an employee to injury, the defective or damaged item shall be removed from service, and no employee may use it until repairs and tests necessary to render the equipment safe have been made.”
(2) OSHA standard 1910.334 may be viewed or downloaded from the OSHA website at: https://www.osha.gov/laws-regs/regulations/standardnumber/1910/1910.334.
(3) Failure to properly examine and correct wiring can result in damage or destruction of Army property and may result in injury or death to personnel.
5. Explanation of Column Headings
a. MODEL
(1) Model numbers have been abbreviated into 12 spaces to conform to the requirements of DA Form 7372. This is the model number assigned by the manufacturer, SAAG drawing number, the JETDS designation, APN, or specification number, etc., depending on how the item is identified by the item manager.
NOTE
When the space provided does not permit the listing of all items of TMDE in a set or kit for a given model number, the entry for the item is repeated as many times as necessary in order that all components are listed.
(2) The CONTINUED column is associated with the MODEL column and is used to further identify the item with such things as substitute part numbers, manufacturer’s drawing numbers, etc.
b. NOMENCLATURE
(1) Item names have been abbreviated into 12 spaces in this TB to conform to requirements of DA Form 7372. Abbreviations from ASME-Y14.38M are used where possible. Paragraph 11 contains abbreviations used in this TB.
(2) The /CONTINUED column is associated with the NOMENCLATURE column and is used to further describe the item, show the commercial equivalent, or as an extension of the item name.
c. CAGE
(1) This is a 5-digit code which identifies the manufacturer of the instrument listed.
Codes used are IAW FEDLOG and the authorized Cage Code listing published by USATA.
(2) The CAGE NAME column is associated with the CAGE column and is used to show the manufacturer’s name to simplify recognition.
d. NSN (National Stock Number)
(1) The NSN is listed to assist in identification and data reporting. Effort has been made to ensure accuracy of this number, but the AMDF and FEDLOG should be consulted for requisitioning purposes.
(2) The APN column is associated with the NSN column and is used to show the Army Part Number or other identification for additional reference.
e. SP (Special Purpose). This column is used to identify special purpose TMDE by the use of the abbreviation SP. The absence of an entry in this column indicates the TMDE is a general purpose (GP) item.
f. CAL TRAC (Calibration Traceability). This column identifies the traceability of the equipment responsible for calibration support of TMDE. Traceability is established from the International System of Units (SI) through a National Metrology Institute (NMI) such as NIST and works down through Primary, Secondary Reference, Secondary Transfer, to the Field level. The entries used in this column are described below.
(1) The letter “F” identifies calibration standards that are traceable from a secondary transfer lab, through a secondary reference lab, and finally through a primary standards lab to a NMI.
(2) The letter “T” identifies calibration standards traceable through a secondary reference lab, to a primary standards lab, to a NMI.
(3) The letter “S” identifies those calibration standards which are traceable to a primary standards lab, and then from there to a NMI.
(4) The letter “P” indicates support capability with equipment directly traceable to a NMI standard.
(5) Individual items of automated test equipment (ATE), listed as “F” level herein, will be calibrated using system software (when that capability exists) by the ATE operator-maintainer during cyclic calibration of other TMDE in the ATE. A DA Label 80 or DA Label 163 will be affixed IAW TB 750-25 listing the calibration interval contained herein and a DA Form 7372 submitted. Checks, verifications, and associated adjustments not affecting calibration of the individual items of ATE accomplished between cyclic calibrations of the system do not constitute a calibration. New DA Labels 80 or 163 will not be affixed, and DA Form 7372 will not be submitted. A calibration will be performed by the responsible maintenance activity subsequent to any repair of the individual items of ATE, a new DA Label 80 or 163 affixed, and a DA Form 7372 submitted.
(6) The letters N/A indicate test sets, tool kits, measurement systems, etc., that do not require calibration as an assemblage and are listed for information only. However, individual components contained within sets, kits, systems, etc., may require calibration.
DA Form 7372 will not be submitted for the assemblage (items identified as N/A) but will be submitted for each component to be calibrated.
(7) TMDE requiring calibration as a set will be on the same interval, or an incremental interval (at no time will the incremental interval exceed the TB 43-180 interval listed), based on the shortest assigned interval of items in the set (i.e., oscilloscope mainframe and associated plug-ins).
g. CAL PROCEDURE (Calibration Procedure)
(1) This column identifies the procedures to be used for calibration support of the TMDE. Calibration procedures include USATA, Air Force (AFTO), Navy (NA17), Technical Bulletins (TB’s), Local Procedures (LP), Owner Submitted Procedures (OP), and Manufacturer’s Manuals (MFR). Items marked NOT SUPPORTED are no longer supported by the U.S. Army calibration and repair support program.
(2) Integrated calibration environment (ICE) procedures are designed to be used in an automated mode with appropriate IEEE/interface connections and cables. ICE procedures are found on the instrument controller image supplied by PD-TMDE and in the ICE index of the USATA homepage.
NOTE
The Measurement Automation Tools (MAT) as posted on the USATA homepage can be used, where applicable, in conjunction with applicable TB’s, AFTO’s, NAVAIR’s, or manufacturer’s manuals, to verify the value of the parameter that the tool was designed to measure. The measurement protocols used by these tools have been dynamically evaluated and give results better than, or equal to, the same measurements done manually. Use of a MAT does not alleviate the calibrator from performing all parameter verifications required by the applicable TB, AFTO, NAVAIR, or manufacturer’s manual.
(3) Procedures identified as Army Metrology Calibration Center (AMCC), U. S. Army TMDE Support Group (ATSG), or U. S. Army TMDE Support Activity (USATA) ##XXXX are limited distribution covering small quantity and/or limited deployed equipment
(4) Examples of procedures for other limited deployed items are GIDEP, Quality Assurance Calibration Procedures (QACP), Calibration Procedures (CP), etc. When a valid need for these procedures exists and procedures are not locally available, a request should be submitted to Commander, U. S. Army Aviation and Missile Command, ATTN:
AMAM-TML-EA, Redstone Arsenal, AL 35898-5000. In addition to the procedure requested, the exact model number and physical location of the instruments being supported should be reflected in the request.
(5) Publication numbers followed by the letter C in the calibration procedure sub columns of this TB indicate classified publications. Calibration actions requiring the use of these publications must be performed only in secure areas designated by the local security officer IAW AR 380-5. The TMDE owner/user is responsible for maintaining classified publications.
(6) The procedure column is also used to identify components of those items designated N/A, where space permits.
(7) When “VENDOR” is listed in the procedure column the item is to be sent directly from the item owner/user/support designee location as indicated in the CAL_TRAC column to the appropriate vendor for support.
Example 1: CAL TRAC ‘F’ with CAL PROC ‘VENDOR’ the owner/user responsibility.
Example 2: CAL TRAC ‘T’ with CAL_PROC ‘VENDOR’ the support site responsibility.
(8) The /CONTINUED column contains additional information associated with the CAL PROCEDURE column and contains special information used by Calibration Support Teams.
NOTE
When an official calibration procedure (i.e., TB, AFTO, or NAVAIR) and a manufacturer's manual (listed in MULTI PROC) are both listed to be used when calibrating an item, the item is to be calibrated using the techniques from the official procedure and the accuracies contained in the manufacturer's manual. There are instances when dual TB’s will be listed when additional standards or techniques have been identified and use of either is authorized. Some calibration procedures can utilize NEXTGEN, an Automated Software environment created by the Air Force.

(10) Calibration Certificate Templates (CCT)/Calibration Data Templates (CDT).
These templates provide test reporting capabilities when used in conjunction with the approved calibration procedure. The templates capture the data created in the testing process. Using these templates advances the measurement process for all calibrations, provides test report data when requested, fulfills an ISO 17025 requirement, and establishes historical data for analysis of out-of-tolerance conditions or audits of any type. The CCT/CDT is included in the TB folder associated with each TB. CCT/CDTs are in constant development for each existing TB. If there is no CCT/CDT in the TB folder, the requirement to gather the data is suspended pending creation of the CCT/CDT. Included in the CCT/CDT is an instructions tab that details the naming convention for the CCT/CDT. Create folders by TB number and save the CCT/CDT as an Excel document into the appropriate folder. When requested, a PDF of the report can be generated and delivered to the customer. To gain access to the TB folders, open a web browser and navigate to: https://usata.redstone.army.mil (system access request approval required to gain access). Navigate to the Publications tab, select “Master List” and follow the path to access the appropriate TB folder.
h. REPAIR. This column identifies the repair responsibility for TMDE. No entry in this column indicates that the lab responsible for the calibration also has the repair responsibility. TMDE identified as CNR will be supported for maintenance/repair as follows:
(1) Items of TMDE that are identified as CNR and have an “F” in the Maintenance Responsibility column are the responsibility of the owner/user for maintenance/repair. If unable to complete maintenance/repair actions, the owner/user may request support from the supporting TSA. TMDE with “VENDOR” in the Maintenance Procedure column are returned to an appropriate vendor for maintenance/repair support.
(2) Items of TMDE that are identified as CNR and have UXX system codes are the responsibility of the owning TSA for maintenance/repair. If the scope of repair is beyond the level of the owning TSA, the lab should request support from the next level supporting TSA.
(3) All other owners/users of TMDE identified as CNR in TB 43-180 will request maintenance/repair assistance from the supporting TSA. If the supporting TSA is unable to complete the repair of the TMDE, the supporting TSA will assist the owner/user in determining the level for repair support required. In all instances, it is the responsibility of the owner/user of the items of TMDE to provide the supporting TSA with supporting maintenance/repair manuals. Items that are not capable of being repaired or are not economically feasible for repair, should be coded out for turn-in and the owner/user can requisition a replacement item
i. MAINT MANUAL (Maintenance Manual)
(1) This column identifies applicable maintenance manuals. When no specific manual is identified, the manufacturer’s manual may be used. If “VENDOR” is listed the item is repairable only at the appropriate vendor. The GIDEP data bank may be utilized to obtain maintenance manuals, as appropriate. For SAAG, this column denotes information describing the usage of the gage.
(2) The /CONTINUED column contains additional information associated with the MAINT MANUAL column and identifies items that have special requirements due to a unique application. Absence of an entry indicates normal calibration requirements.
j. CAL INT (Calibration Interval)
(1) Table 1 indicates the maximum number of days that TMDE may be used before recalibration is required. USATA, in coordination with the responsible materiel developer or materiel manager, may change these intervals to improve reliability or materiel readiness.
Brevity codes are used for entries on DA Form 7372 and are provided for reference (see
TB 750-25).
NOTE
TMDE listed with an interval of “N/A” has special support requirements. This entry may identify the item as a sub-part of a larger system, indicate the item has been designated part of the Army prepositioned stock program (APS), or identify the equipment as no longer supported (obsolete).
(2) A request to deviate from the published TB 43-180 interval will be submitted to the applicable support TSA by the TMDE owner. Deviation requests may be submitted using a DA FORM 3758-R or memorandum. If the deviation request is for an interval shorter than that designated in the TB 43-180, no further review is required, and the TSA will maintain the deviation request locally. If the deviation request is for an interval longer (including CNR) than that designated in the TB 43-180, the TSA will forward the request and applicable support justification for an engineering review using a DA FORM 3758-R. The USATA Enterprise Support Directorate will review the submitted DA Form 3758-R and either approve the request or provide documented concerns why it is not currently being approved.
The supporting TSA will maintain a copy of the approved DA Form 3758-R locally until the interval deviation request is rescinded. If the deviation request affects multiple locations and/or multiple support TSAs then a separate system code listing in the TB 43-180 for the affected TMDE may be considered.

(3) IAW AR 750-43 the TMDE owner/user may request, in writing, an extension beyond the calibration void date for a limited period of time (a maximum of 10 percent of the established interval) under certain specific conditions; e.g., an item being used on an in-process test. The owner/user will submit, in writing, to the supporting organization a request for the deviation. The supporting organization will make a technical assessment reviewing the calibration void date extension request. After the technical assessment, the supporting organization will either grant the extension or provide the requester a written response justifying why the request was denied. The TMDE used in areas for personnel safety will not be allowed deviation from prescribed calibration intervals.
k. SYSTEMS. Three-digit system codes (see paragraph 10) have been assigned to various systems and commands to simplify data processing. Each requirement is entered into the TB 43-180 master file by using the system code of the submitting system or command. These codes identify only those system or command requirements that require a different interval, level, procedure, etc., from the normal requirements due to a unique application. The ‘USA’ System Code indicates that calibration requirements are the same for all users. The TMDE owner should refer to paragraph 10 of this TB, then select and identify to the calibration facility the code that most accurately defines the system or command that the TMDE is used to support.
6. Equipment Requiring Special Handling or Reporting
a. RADIAC Meters
(1) Specific guidance for C&RS for RADIAC meters is found in TB 9-6665-285-24.
(2) Calibration intervals for RADIAC meters are as follows:
(a) Radiographic meters (used to comply with 10 CFR 34.25) will be conspicuously marked with embossing tape with the word RADIOGRAPHIC and calibrated every 180 days.
(b) Instruments used for evaluation of diagnostic X-ray and dental X-ray will be conspicuously marked with embossing tape with the word X-RAY and calibrated at primary
(P) level every 360 days.
(c) Active-type meters (those instruments used for “Health and Safety” or used to comply with 10 CFR 35.51 and not included in (a) or (b) above) will be conspicuously marked ACTIVE or MEDICAL and calibrated with an interval of 360 days if the instrument is accompanied by a USATA-approved dedicated check source when presented for calibration.
If the check source is not on the USATA approved check source list, the owner/user will submit requests for initial approval of the 360-day interval through the Enterprise Support Directorate to the Army Radiological Standards Lab and must include the model/serial number of the instrument, serial number and isotope of check source, the activity of the check source, and a statement of protocol on the check source to be used with the instrument to ensure in-tolerance conditions are maintained. RADIAC meters used in support of the Mobile Vehicle and Cargo Inspection System (MVACIS) will be calibrated with an interval of 360 days, employing the radioactive source incorporated in the MVACIS as the dedicated check source. Active-type instruments not having a USATA approved check source will be calibrated at the intervals specified in Section I of this TB. Active-type instruments not listed in Section I of this TB will require submission of a DA Form 3758 for support and will be calibrated every 180 days.
(d) Tactical meters will be calibrated every 1080 days.
(e) The calibration interval for survey instruments primarily used to measure neutron radiation is 240 days and not to exceed 360 days; neutron dosimeters is 360 days, unless the meter / dosimeter falls under the category of RADIOGRAPHIC (paragraph 6.a(2)(a) above).
(f) RADIAC instruments used only in research and development applications will be conspicuously marked with embossing tape as “R&D ONLY”. The calibration interval for these items will be determined by the owner, who will state in writing, the interval assigned (based on the category of usage/license requirements) to each individual instrument.
Based on their usage the calibration level for these instruments will be at the appropriate facility having the capability to meet the accuracy required.
(g) Tritium air monitors requiring tritium gas for calibration are calibrated at TSC-Anniston with a 360-day calibration interval. Monitors calibrated electronically are calibrated at secondary reference level facilities with the required calibration equipment with the same interval.
(h) REACT Meters (instruments used for emergency response and not NRC license compliance) will be conspicuously marked with embossing tape as “REACT”. The calibration interval for these instruments will be in accordance with (c) above, with the exception of personnel dosimeters, which will receive a 360-day calibration interval. The calibration level for these instruments will be at the appropriate facility having the capability to meet the accuracy required based on the usage of the items.
NOTE
Area monitors that have periodic operational checks performed by the owner/user using a check source shall be designated CNR provided a calibrated active meter is available for accurate measurements as needed. All other area monitors shall be considered as active and calibrated IAW Section I of this TB.
(3) RADIAC Meters with Multiple Probes
(a) When an instrument is submitted for calibration with several probes, the owner/user of the instrument will designate the primary probe, and the others are designated as secondary probes for use with that instrument. A DA Form 7372 is generated for the instrument/meter with a DA Label 80 affixed to the meter after calibration. A calibration report is generated for the meter, primary probe, and secondary probe(s); documenting the complete calibration of the meter/primary probe combination with meter adjustments as necessary, and annotating secondary probe indications only, with no further adjustments to the meter. A DA Form 7372 need not be generated for the primary or secondary probes. A label will be affixed to the primary and secondary probes indicating “For Use With XXXXX Only” identifying the instrument/meter the probe is authorized to be used with. Regardless of the calibration intervals identified for the individual probes in the Section I of TB 43-180, the probes will all receive the same calibration interval as the instrument they accompany.
(b) Microprocessor-controlled RADIAC instruments, those designed to permit the storage of calibration factors for multiple probes in memory, will be calibrated with each probe submitted. A DA Form 7372 will be generated for the instrument and the remarks section should list probes submitted for use with the meter. A DA Label 80 will be affixed to the meter and a label will be affixed to the submitted probes indicating “For Use With XXXXX Only” identifying the instrument/meter the probe is authorized to be used with. Regardless of the calibration intervals identified for the individual probes in Section I of TB 43-180, the probes will all receive the same calibration interval as the instrument
They accompany. In the case of the AN/PDR-77 RADIAC Set, the Models DT674, DT695, and DT696 detector radiation will be calibrated individually only when specifically requested by the user (who must justify the requirement for calibration). A DA Form 7372 will be generated for the RADIAC Set and the remarks section should list probes submitted for use with the meter. A DA Label 80 will be affixed to the meter and a label will be affixed to the submitted probes indicating “For Use With XXXXX Only” identifying the instrument/meter the probe is authorized to be used with. All other Models DT674, DT695, and DT696 detectors will be placed in a “Calibrate Before Use” (CBU) status.
(c) If an instrument is submitted for calibration with one or more “smart probes” (those able to store calibration parameters within the probe itself and thus can be used with any compatible meter/readout unit), each probe will be calibrated and will receive the calibration interval identified in Section I of TB 43-180, regardless of the interval of the meter/readout unit. A DA Form 7372 will be generated for the meter and each probe and a DA Label 80 affixed to the meter and each probe.
(4) Radiation counting instruments (excluding RADIAC survey meters) used for wipe/leak test analysis and/or radionuclide assay are CNR. Owner/users will perform the operational checks on these instruments, including background determination, voltage plateau, chi-square, and efficiency.
(5) The U. S. Army Medical Department (AMEDD) health care program relies on calibrated TMDE to verify the accuracy of medical X-ray equipment used in the diagnosis and treatment of patients in the program. This section deals specifically with the following three categories of medical X-ray TMDE used in support of hospital X-ray machines:
(a) Medical X-ray high voltage instruments will be calibrated and repaired by the USAPSL. X-ray high voltage instruments consist basically of a bipolar high voltage divider with associated shunts and are used to verify peak anode and cathode voltage and anode and filament current of X-ray generators under test. Examples of these types of instruments (although not limited to these manufacturers) are the Machlett Laboratories Dynalyzer, Models Y-1A, II, and III, and the General Electric High Voltage Bleeder. A float of Dynalyzer II and III high voltage instruments has been established at the USAPSL. The float ensures that AMEDD units have calibrated instruments continuously available. USATA controls the float and recall system by shipping a calibrated instrument to AMEDD units. To assure the maintenance of an effective operational float system, responsible AMEDD units must ship their instruments to USATA within 24 hours after receipt of calibrated instruments from
USATA.
(b) X-ray radiation probes are calibrated and repaired by the USAPSL Nucleonic Laboratory. X-ray radiation probe consists of an ionization chamber type radiation transducer which produces a frequency dependent output pulse train proportional to radiation intensity. Examples of these probes (although not limited to these manufacturers) are the Dynalyzer II and III radiation probe or the Victoreen, Model 660.
(c) Other TMDE associated with medical X-ray equipment is supported in accordance with TB 43-180. General and special purpose measurement instrumentation instruments are used to monitor the outputs from X-ray high voltage instruments and probes.
The TMDE in this category are basically voltmeters, counters, and oscilloscopes. The Dynalyzer II display unit is an example of a self-contained instrument capable of providing full X-ray voltage unit readout.
(6) Isotope identifiers with a Dose Rate, Dose, Exposure, and/or counts per second readout on the display may be placed in a CNR status using a CNR over-stamped DA Label 163 stating “This instrument is only authorized for isotope identification. Quantitative measurements not authorized.” in block 7-comments. Otherwise, this instrument must be calibrated IAW 6.a.(2)(c).
b. Army Dosimeters
(1) The calibration intervals and procedures for RADIAC dosimeters IM9( ), IM93( ), and IM147( ) are as follows: Tactical RADIAC dosimeters will be calibrated for 1080 days using TM 11-6665-227-13 or USATA 870. Active RADIAC dosimeters will be calibrated at secondary reference (S) level using gamma or X-ray calibrators only, IAW calibration procedure USATA 874, at the interval specified in Section I of this TB. Active RADIAC dosimeters will not be calibrated using the AN/UDM-2 RADIAC calibrator. All RADIAC dosimeters in the range of 0 to 200 mR will be calibrated at 360-day intervals (max).
NOTE
RADIAC dosimeters IM93( )/UD and IM147( )/PD shall only be used as a tactical RADIAC dosimeter. RADIAC dosimeters IM9( )/PD should not be used as a tactical RADIAC dosimeter.
(2) Calibration of the SAIC, Model PD-10i, electronic dosimeter, using X-rays is primary level and is accomplished at the Army Primary Standards Laboratory only.
Calibration of the PD-10i using gamma radiation is secondary reference level and can be accomplished at Active RADIAC Support Sites identified in TB 9-6665-285-24.
(3) Calibration of Model EPDMK2+, electronic dosimeter, using X-rays is accomplished at the Army Primary Standards Laboratory only. If the owner does not specify using X-rays, Model EPDMK2+ is calibrated using Cesium-137 gamma at Secondary Reference RADIAC support sites (Aberdeen, White Sands, Kaiserslautern, Camp Carroll).
Owners of Model EPDMK2+, electronic dosimeter supported by the National Guard are scheduled through Aberdeen and calibration is performed by the CECOM Safety Office.
c. TMDE Requiring Additional Equipment and/or Accessories. The material fielder for TMDE that requires additional equipment and/or accessories not included in the calibration standards set must provide to USATA the additional equipment and/or accessories necessary for C&RS. The material fielder is identified by the system code entry in the SYSTEMS column.
d. Torque Calibration Arms. Torque calibration arms are CNR for elements/units that possess torque cells and appropriate indicators. For all elements/units that require the use of these arms to calibrate torque cells, torque indicators, or other torque devices, these items will be calibrated as described for that model in TB 43-180.
e. Commissary Weights and Scales. Calibration and repair support for commissary weights and scales is limited to those DOD commissaries located outside of the United States, U. S. territories, and possessions.
f. Personnel Weighing Scales and Equipment used for the Army Combat Fitness Test (ACFT). Owning units will verify personnel weighing scales IAW AR 600-9 prior to use as part of the Army Body Composition program. If a reading is suspect or suggests a deviation from the Army standard, the actual weight of the soldier can be verified at the medical facility where properly calibrated scales are available. Owners are responsible for maintenance/repair support of their personnel weighing scales. Stationary bicycles and rowers used in gyms and for the Army Combat Fitness Test (ACFT) are not considered
TMDE.
g. Postal Scales
(1) All TMDE, including postal scales, authorized to Army postal organizations by MTOE, TDA, or other Army authorization documents are the support responsibility of the USATA. These items of TMDE will be listed in this TB and calibration and repair support will be provided under the guidance applicable to all Army general purpose TMDE. This policy excludes those postal scales leased to Army postal organizations and calibrated/repaired under the lease agreement.
(2) The support of TMDE used in postal facilities operated by the U. S. Postal Services is not the responsibility of the USATA. The USATA will support this TMDE only on a reimbursable basis under a negotiated support agreement.
h. Dimensional Gages (other than small arms and ammunition gages (SAAG)).
Inspection and calibration of these gages will be IAW the following:
(1) Inspection and calibration of dimensional gages such as ring, plug, and thread gages used in Army industrial facilities or in depot overhaul or rebuild missions (excluding SAAG) should be identified in the applicable Depot Maintenance Work Request (DMWR).
(See AR 750-1 and MIL-STD-40051-1 and -2). When the inspection and calibration requirements for these gages are not specified in the DMWR, they will be inspected and calibrated using the gage drawing. Inspection and calibration intervals on gages not specified in DMWRs or official requirements lists will be established by the using depot or facility predicated on the degree of usage.
(2) All gages will be entered in the owner’s/user’s master record file (IMRF). The gages will be reported to USATA via DA Form 7372. The owners/users will contact their local TSA for instructions on where to send their gages for inspection and/or calibration.
(3) Listings of drawings, technical data files, and calibration procedures used to support the inspection and calibration of gages will be maintained by the activity that performs the calibration. Calibration of gages accomplished in-house will be reported to the local TSA.
(4) Gages that have been sealed in industrial grade air-dry plastic coating do not require recalibration on their calibration expiration date if the plastic coating has not been damaged or removed. However, careful inspection of thread gages for damage is required. If the plastic coating is intact and no damage has occurred to the gage the owner/user will notify the supporting TMDE activity to update the gage calibration. The DA Form 7372 will be processed to reflect the new due date with the following entry in the remarks block “Plastic coating has not been removed or damaged.” The supporting activity will provide the owner/user with a DA Label 80 (when applicable) reflecting the new calibration expiration date. If a gage record card is used in lieu of a DA Label 80 then this card will be annotated with the new date and initialed by a responsible individual from both the using and supporting activity.
i. Torque Wrenches
(1) Torque Wrenches are only entered with a Model Number; they will not be entered with a measurement range.
(2) Aviation torque instruments such as wrenches, screwdrivers, drivers, and watches which are used on aircraft or in a manner that could affect the aircraft’s safety of flight are the only authorized components of the L00 system code. Organizations with both aviation and ground-based operations will ensure their TMDE is identified with the proper system code. Units with both aviation and ground-based operations shall ensure their TMDE is identified with the proper system code. Torque devices not used to support aircraft will be given the USA (or other appropriate) system code.
(3) Torque wrenches are normally calibrated to manufacturer specifications but may be calibrated in a single direction if requested by the owner. If a torque wrench capable of being calibrated in both directions is only verified in one direction the DA Label must indicate which direction the torque wrench was calibrated. The direction of calibration may be identified on a DA Label 163 or a DA Label 80 (see figure 1) and overprinted with the appropriate Clockwise (CW) ONLY/Counter-Clockwise (CCW) ONLY marking.
Figure 1. DA Label 80 Example.
j. Petroleum, Oils, and Lubricants (POL) Meters and Differential Pressure Gages
(1) Vehicle refueling and dispensing meters (point of use) are not considered TMDE.
Verification of these meters, when required, will be performed by Field Maintenance or Director of Logistics (DOL) personnel using a calibrated prover can or a calibrated master meter. The prover can or master meter will be calibrated by an ACL or the USAPSL.
(2) Bulk fuel flow meters used for custody transfer are considered TMDE. Submit 3758’s as necessary to establish a listing in TB 43-180 for any models not already listed.
(3) Differential pressure gages used on bulk fuel storage and refueling facilities will be calibrated at (T) level using TB 9-6685-330-24 with an interval of 360 days. These gauges are not specifically identified in Section Is of this TB.
(4) A 5-gallon capacity prover can is listed in this TB as Test Measure, 5 Gal STD under Model API1101. A DA Form 3758-R should be submitted by the owner or user for any other model prover cans or master meter requiring calibration support IAW TB 750-25. A prover can must be properly sized to accommodate the flow rate through the meter during normal use in accordance with the API Manual of Petroleum Measurement (chapter 4). For example, small prover cans cannot properly calibrate high flow rate fuel flow meters.
k. Welfare, Recreation, and Morale Support Activities Equipment. TMDE used by Army Morale Support Activities (MSA), and classified as government property IAW AR 215-1, will be supported on a non-reimbursable basis. The determination of eligibility for support is the responsibility of the using MSA. For TMDE not specifically listed in this TB, the owning MSA, in coordination with the local TSA, will establish calibration requirements and intervals based on local use, using this TB as a guide.
l. Medical Diagnostic Equipment. Medical TMDE used in medical repair facilities will be listed IAW AR 40-61 and TB MED 750-2. Medical TMDE will receive periodic calibration as described in TB 43-180. Medical maintenance equipment shipping to the appropriate calibration facility will be coordinated by the owner. General purpose (GP) TMDE will be evacuated to the appropriate scheduler (SUIC) for calibration/repair support. Special purpose (SP) TMDE may be evacuated to the appropriate PUIC (medical maintenance, vendor, etc.) facility for calibration/repair support. Coordination will be made with the scheduler for items not sent directly to the scheduler for support. The owner is also responsible for providing updated calibration due dates to the scheduler upon return, for all items evacuated to support locations other than the scheduler location.
m. Radar Speed Guns. Radar speed guns are not considered TMDE. Verification of radar speed guns will be performed by the owner/user as required. The tuning forks used in the verification of radar speed guns will be calibrated on an annual basis (360 days) by USATA, using calibration procedure TB 9-6695-300-40.
n. Oxygen Gages and Breathable Air Gages
(1) Oxygen gages are used in systems where the oxygen level exceeds 25%. The cleanliness of gages used in oxygen systems is critical as any contaminants can create an extreme fire hazard and cause significant damage to the gage’s system. Oxygen gages are sealed after calibration and should not be opened until being placed into service by the end-user. USATA does not have the capability to calibrate oxygen gages. Contact your supporting Secondary Reference Lab for evacuation to a commercial vendor for calibration.
(2) Breathable air gages may also be referred to as critical air gages. These gages are used in systems where extra cleanliness is required because the gages are used on breathing apparatuses. The gas used with these gages feeds directly into the users’ lungs so any contaminants could cause the user serious injury or death. Examples are gages used on diving equipment, decompression chambers and fire department rescue equipment.
Breathable air gages are sealed after calibration and should not be opened until being placed into service by the end-user. If the oxygen content of a breathable air gage exceeds 25%, it should be cleaned in accordance with requirements for oxygen gages. USATA does not have the capability to calibrate breathable air gages. Contact your supporting Secondary Reference Lab for evacuation to a commercial vendor for calibration.
(3) All Oxygen and Breathable Air Gages will be listed with the System Code S10.
Gages that do not fall under the Oxygen or Breathable Air categories should be considered normal gages and are calibrated in accordance with the guidance provide in this TB.
o. Thread Wires. All Master Wires (1 wire/vial) are supported at APSL. Sets of Working Wires (3 wires/vial) are supported at locations that have the Laser Scan Micrometer LSM-6902H and Master Wires; those locations are: TSC-Camp Carroll, TSC-Kaiserslautern, TSC-Japan, TSC-Letterkenny, TSC-Tobyhanna, TSC-Aberdeen, TSC-Rock Island, TSC-Anniston, TSC-Redstone Arsenal, TSC-White Sands, TSC-Fort Hood, and TSC-Corpus Christi.
p. Attenuator Sets. Attenuator sets will have one DA 7372 for the entire set. Each individual attenuator in the set shall have its own DA Label 80 and calibration certificate.
Many attenuator sets consist of multiple attenuators, all with the same serial number. All attenuator sets that share the set serial number will be listed on their individual DA Label 80 with the serial number followed by a dash (“-“) and the attenuation value. Example:
437-3DB, 437-6DB, 437-10DB.
q. Sound Level Meters, Acoustical Calibrators, and Noise Dosimeters. The sound level meters, acoustical calibrators (piston phones), and noise dosimeters used in hearing conservation (noise-hazard) programs must be calibrated at least annually as required by DA Pam 40-501, paragraph 4-2.
r. Intrimiks and Setting Rings
(1) The calibration of Intrimiks will be performed at the level where appropriate setting rings are available. When setting rings are not available calibration support can be obtained from TSC-Anniston, TSC-Rock Island, TSC-Tobyhanna, or TSC-Warren.
(2) Deleted (left blank intentionally).
s. Calibration of the John Fluke, Model 80K6 High Voltage Probe
(1) The Model 80K6 probe, issued as part of the AN/PSM45A, AN/GSM-437, and Fluke 27/FM METR M DIGTL, is a component part of these meters and will not have a separate DA Label 80 or DA Form 7372 prepared for it.
(2) This listing for the Model 80K6 probes is for those probes which are not a part of the AN/PSM45A, AN/GSM-437, or the Fluke 27/FM. These probes are calibrated as indicated.
t. Pressure and Flow gages used for indication only. Includes Pressure Gages and Flowmeters used on Air Compressors and Compressed Cylinder Regulators (Single and Dual Stage), Welding Regulators, Special Purpose Hydraulic, Pneumatic Regulating Controllers, Paint Booth, Air Handling System and Refrigerant Gages. These items are used to indicate the presence of pressure and/or flow and do not make a quantitative measurement.
