2.2 Definitions

Maximum Operating Pressure (MOP): Where the Extreme Service Condition Pressure ESCP

(population mean) and the corresponding pressure standard deviation (populations) are known then MOP is the ESCP plus three standard deviations estimated during the cannon design phase.

The MOP may be equal to but not greater than System Permissible Maximum Pressure.

System Permissible Maximum Pressure (PMP): The Permissible Maximum (PMP) is a service pressure which should not be exceeded statistically more than 13 times over the course of 10,000 extreme service condition rounds. The System PMP derived either the pressure of cannon PMP or projectile PMP whichever is the lower for a specified system.

System Design Pressure (DP): The design pressure is the pressure for which the test item was designed for, including safety factor. The System DP is equal to the Cannon DP or Projectile

DP, whichever is the lower for a specified system.

Extreme Service Condition Pressure (ESCP): Is the mean chamber pressure developed when firing the specified system at the maximum temperature extreme with the addition of the pressure variances that have been recorded to due to tube to tube, occasion to occasion, and propellant lot to lot, differences.

Mil: For this document, the NATO mil will be used. The NATO mil is defined as an angle comprising 1/6400th of a circle, equal to 0.05625 degrees.

4.2 Pre Live fire Inspection;

General; All parts shall be free of dents, bulges, gouges and cracks. Any defects in excess of those listed above, or not covered, must be reported to PD-NSA for engineering disposition.

4.2.1) Barrel; Visually inspect the barrel and breech cap for completeness of assembly/workmanship. The barrels inner diameter shall be inspected at (3) approximately evenly spaced points over the length of the barrel. At each of these lengths the diameter will be measured twice at 90 degree intervals for a total of 6 diameter measurements. These measurements shall ensure interior tolerances as provided by the manufacturer are met.

4.2.2) Bipod Subassemblies; The weapon shall be Cross Leveled, Traverse and Elevated through the full range of motion(s), described in the mortar publications. During these cross leveling, traverse and elevation movements, special care is taken to note any evidence of stiff, binding or erratic operation. Additionally there shall be less than 1/8 of a turn (backlash) of the cross leveling, elevation or traversing hand wheel(s) before movement occurs. Ensure there is no leaking hydraulic fluids (if applicable). The shock absorber shall be manually cycled to determine if there is damage to the buffer subassembly.

4.2.3) Bipod / Barrel interface; The bipod/barrel interface mechanism shall provide a firm clamping force to the barrel. The barrel shall not slide freely when hung under its own weight.

4.2.4) Baseplate; Visually inspect the baseplate and latching socket for completeness of assembly/workmanship.

4.2.5) Barrel / Baseplate interface; The base plate shall be retained on the barrel when hung under its own weight via its latched ball/socket connection.

4.2.6) Weapon site / Dove tail interface;

The sight shall securely latch to its respective dove tail interface.

Step1: Insert the sight unit into the dovetail of the bipod. Anchor the bipod in a vise or similar devise to ensure its immobility. With the bipod at center traverse, aim the right side of the sight unit reticle onto the left side of the blue rectangle on the Weapon Site

Verification Target located in Appendix A of this specification. The distance between the purple and blue rectangles on the Weapon Site Verification Target is 3 centimeters across and placed 100 meters from the site.

Step 2: Level the sight unit, and lock the bipod traverse and sight unit into place.

Step 3: The gunner, while looking through the sight unit, will press forward, with one hand, on the cantilevered sight unit along the line of fire. The force should remove all free play from the sight unit in the dovetail. While looking through the sight unit, the reticle shall not deviate from the center of the object far enough to exceed the sides

(1.5cm) of the object. At this range, a 1.5cm deflection equals 0.15 mils of deflection.

Step 4: The gunner, while looking through the sight unit, will press backwards, with one hand, on the cantilevered sight unit along the line of fire. The force should remove all free play from the sight unit in the dovetail. While looking through the sight unit, the reticle shall not deviate from the center of the object far enough to exceed the sides (1.5

cm) of the object. At this range, a 1.5cm deflection equals 0.15 mils of deflection.

See Appendix A, Weapon Site Verification Target Step 3 & 4 (Pass / Fail)

If the slop in the dovetail/sight unit interface exceeds 0.15 mils in either direction, the results must be reported to PD-NSA for engineering disposition.

4.3 Live Fire Testing:

4.3.1 Seating the Baseplate;

The Baseplate shall be firmly seated to the manufacturer’s satisfaction prior to beginning the proof testing. It is recommended that at least one cartridge be fired at top charge during the seating of the baseplate.

4.3.2 Proof Testing;

It is recommended that cartridges with Inert fill be used during this test, however the decision shall be left to the manufacturer.

Elevation/Traverse; the weapon shall be set to 45 degrees (800 mils) elevation. The traverse shall be centered and the system re-leveled. Depending on the information in the provided publications, the proof pressure shall be determined in using the methods below.

If there is sufficient information for both methods, use the method which yields the highest proof pressure.

Method 1: The cartridge shall be loaded with additional propellant so that its chamber pressure is at least the System Permissible Maximum allowable Pressure (PMP) of the highest pressure cartridge provided under the contract.

Should the cartridge fail to reach a minimum the System PMP up to 4 additional attempts can be made to achieve it. If the barrel fails to reach system PMP in 5 attempts, the barrel shall be re-inspected for damage and the the contractor shall notify the US

Government by contract letter to determine the disposition of the barrel.

Should a cartridge achieve a pressure of over the System Design Pressure (DP), the barrel shall be marked with a red grease pen to ensure it can be differentiated from the other barrels being tested. The contractor shall notify the US Government by contract letter, to determine the disposition of the barrel. The barrel shall not be marked with a proof mark until the disposition by the US Gov. to do so is received. However the barrel may continue to be ballistically tested and inspected as per this specification.

Once a cartridge reaches System PMP to System DP, the Proof test is complete.

Method 2: The cartridge shall be loaded with additional propellant so that its chamber pressure is 5 Standard Deviations (StdDev) in excess of the Maximum Operating

Pressure (MOP).

Should the cartridge fail to reach a minimum of 5 StdDev overpressure up to 4 additional attempts can be made to achieve it. If the barrel fails to reach this minimum in 5 attempts, the barrel shall be re-inspected for damage and the the contractor shall notify the US Government by contract letter to determine the disposition of the barrel.

Should a cartridge achieve a pressure of 10 StdDev or more over pressure, the barrel shall be marked with a red grease pen to ensure it can be differentiated from the other barrels being tested. The contractor shall notify the US Government by contract letter, to determine the disposition of the barrel. The barrel shall not be marked with a proof mark until the disposition by the US Gov. to do so is received. However the barrel may continue to be ballistically tested and inspected as per this specification.

Once a cartridge reaches 5 to 10 StdDev overpressure, the Proof test is complete.

Method 3 (Given ESCP): The cartridge shall be loaded with additional propellant so that its chamber pressure is 12% - 16% in excess of the Extreme Serviceable Conditional

Pressure allowable pressure (ESCP) of the highest pressure cartridge provided under the contract.

Should the cartridge fail to reach a minimum of 16% overpressure up to 4 additional attempts can be made to achieve it. If the barrel fails to reach 16% in 5 attempts, the barrel shall be re-inspected for damage and the the contractor shall notify the US

Government by contract letter to determine the disposition of the barrel.

Should a cartridge achieve a pressure of 16% or more over pressure, the barrel shall be marked with a red grease pen to ensure it can be differentiated from the other barrels being tested. The contractor shall notify the US Government by contract letter, to determine the disposition of the barrel. The barrel shall not be marked with a proof mark until the disposition by the US Gov. to do so is received. However the barrel may continue to be ballistically tested and inspected as per this specification.

Once a cartridge reaches 12% to 16% overpressure, the Proof test is complete.

At the conclusion of the test Proof Testing a report shall be provided to NSA.

At the minimum, the reports should contain the following information:

a. Part name

b. Drawing number and revision

c. Test date

d. Required values

e. Actual values
